Wow, he somehow managed to make this more exceptional than I thought.

Not only is he conflating an issue that existed with Animaniacs that doesn't exist for SU since with the exception of guest animators the animation is all handled by one company (and incidentally the guest animator episodes were the only ones with consistent animation/art direction throughout) but it's like he can't even articulate why the "muh individuality" is important to a show like SU, or what the constantly warping heights & proportions even adds to the experience.

It really is the "professional" equivalent of some 13 year old on Deviant Art crying "but it's muh style!!" in response to people pointing out their Chris Hart-tier animu drawings aren't gonna impress anyone.

First panel and I'm already mad. Congratulations, Dobson.

To begin with, its a complete lie. I want to put in perspective just how much he's lying about the Animaniacs portion here and how it really has no comparison to SU's off model. While there were vague inconsistencies in the TMS, Startoons, and Akom animations for Animaniacs, the characters were consistently the same height and consistently had the same proportions. Mainly only serious animation geeks can tell the difference between a scene done by each studio and the Yakko drawing he provided is quite honestly a severe exaggeration of the differences.

Neither of them are really OFF MODEL despite having minor inconsistencies. Certainly not enough to lose anywhere between one to three feet of height due to 'different studios' and 'different animators'. He's very simply comparing apples to oranges here; Animaniacs may have had inconsistencies in style but even with those styles it was never notably off model purposely. What he's talking about here is shit like the different ways each storyboard artist draws Steven which I've only really seen absolute nitpickers bitch about. It's not what bothers people about Steven Universe (and by extension, OK KO) when it comes to being off model. What bothers people is the fact that even within the same scene, people are shrinking and changing their hairstyles.

But I would LOVE for him to find an Animaniacs comparison to THIS.

They don't even look like the same character. Rebecca Sugar has ADMITTED that they show doesn't have a height chart because muh effects. The difference here is mild differences in style and the fact that Rebecca Sugar simply cannot fucking control her crew worth shit. The styles in other shows may vary a bit based on studio, animator, and even company owning the show at the time but they have control over it. SU simply does not. Dobson knows nothing about animation if he seriously thinks that this poorly construed comparison is even NEAR logical.

Then again

Dobson doesn't know much about much.

Dobson is the most Dobsony Dobson since Dobson that I ever heard of. Why is he even trying to defend this shit? I'd love for him to brag that he knows best since he actually went to school for animation, and then have somebody point out how he never got a job in the industry. Going to school only means that he learned some basics, but never applied them (or himself) enough to actually break into the business. Basically, Dobson is at best cosplaying as an animator.

At this point, Dobson should take his MCAD degree, and have his mother wipe his ass with it for him, because that’s about all it’s worth at this point.

No, Dobson. That is wrong.
Robobuddies (you know, the video you refused to watch because God forbid anybody have an opinion different to yours) already debunked this nonsense about "IT'S A STYLE", but here's what gets me.

You used fucking AKOM as an example.
AKOM. The people LEGENDARY for animation errors and sub-par work, and actually got FIRED for this from Batman: The Animated Series.

On top of that, do you honestly want people to take you seriously when you can't even figure out how much fingers your bear character is supposed to have?

Bears repeating: STEVEN UNIVERSE NEEDS A STOOL TO REACH A KITCHEN COUNTER NOW. You do NOT get to say it's a 'style' when it's a glaring animation error.

NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE FUCKING NO.

No.

This is not off-model Dobson, this is not fucking off-model at all. FUCKING CHRIST.

Look at the two versions of Yakko in this comic, let's ignore for a second the excellent point @MintChocolateChip made about the poor drawing you chose to represent Startoons version so you could prop up that weak ass argument, have you noticed something else Dobson? Notice the characters FEATURES.

No, not the pose they are in...

No, not the slight difference in bagginess of the pants...

No look CLOSER. Notice that BOTH of these versions have the same number of fucking fingers? THAT is what people get onto you about. You don't draw ANYTHING consistently because you are too lazy to actually plan characters out. We make model sheets because it allows us (us.. haha I mean me Dobson) as artists to have a quick reference for the sake of consistency. This isn't hard Dobson, in fact character sheets are easy to make and are actually good practice for an artist to become accustomed to drawing their characters. Hell if you actually practiced you would be able to draw characters repeatedly without needing the model sheet provided you were diligent in checking the characters against either other objects/characters in frame or even the backdrop for scale reference. These things are not hard to do Dobson.

You can not bullshit your way into being a better artist Dobson; no matter how hard you try.
