Oh my god, WHERE is CatParty when I need him?! I can't even begin to start with how this will so never make it as a feature. I had to google her VOA because I have never heard of him and the rate she quoted on him was so cheap I thought it was a joke. So her Ace-In-The-Hole is a 60-year-old guy in Florida with a Gateway laptop who's only been in the business for four years?! His audio samples are lazy and his audio book narration lacks diction and punch. He sounds like a retired guy who's decided to finally put that BA in theatre to use.

I get that this has fallen into PD, but I can guarantee you that Chaplin's "Smile" in NOT in Public Domain and holds licensing fees for both the tune AND the lyrics since they hold separate copyrights. To a bigger point I see absolutely no market potential for this character, "Wog" is a blatantly offensive term stemming from the British colonialism of Africa and the Near East. It was used to describe natives of color and much like "Little Black Sambo", I find it no coincidence that this character is "brown" and I'm fairly sure if she tried to shop this around to a "real" production and releasing company things would end fairly quickly. Her video test is amateurish and if I was shown this as a producer I would throw it back in the pile, the Wogglebug is creepy and the girl's character design is terrible, her voice is stilted and off-putting. The whole thing feels like a "bad touch" 'Now, Children What Should You Do When Someone Makes You Feel Uncomfortable?" PSA. But I have to say, as far as ambitious and crazy go, she's definitely up on DisneyFan for going out and throwing away her dough on VOAs and Work For Hire artists. And as long as they have a check to cash that doesn't bounce, hell, I'd probably willing to throw in some script coverage and dialogue notes. I'll be happy to submit my rate.

But, honestly, when I got to: " I make Wogglebug the center of my career because he needs me more than others" I knew that the sanity train had pulled out of the station long ago. But boy, oh boy, would I LOVE to be in the room when she threw that gem out when she pitched the producers!

Well all I can say now is that you've hit the nail right on the head there.

Just waiting for some ween to insert a PedoBear in that pic....

Done.

As someone who has done a fair bit of professional voice work, I can say that her work is dreadful. It's not fluid, it sounds like she's either a poor reader or making stuff up off the top of her head (without any improvisational skill). The one skill that got me hired was my ability to read faster than I can talk, meaning I could read ahead as I spoke at a natural pace and thus made less mistakes than people who were slower readers (because studio time = big bucks). She clearly doesn't read aloud much, and judging by her writing skills she doesn't read too widely either.

i see there was at least some effort to move frogman's eyes slightly in the first picture, and his legs in the second, but otherwise its hilarious they're all exactly the same. I hope she didn't waste too much money on these drawings... They are slightly better than the old ones, though.
In fact, notice that the only character who gets a different pose and expression for each picture is Mr. Wogglebug. Coincidence? I doubt it.

the creepiest one. I want a music video of him singing the jazz version of "Get down with the sickness"

Kill it. Now.

Sorry, that's one of my favorite songs, and I don't like butcherings of my favorite songs.

Also, why not Somewhere Over The Rainbow. Wouldn't that one make more sense?

Her mannerisms remind me of the speech-to-text feature Stewie's playing with here:

Yes! It really was like that. I've seen a lot of amateur voice over um... 'artists' online and she is honestly the worst. If you've ever experienced the members of the Voice Acting Alliance, you'll know that's saying a lot. A-Log was a better voice actor. A-LOG!

I'll admit, I don't know much about copyright, so forgive me for sounding like an idiot.

Wogglebug is public domain correct? So hypothetically, would Bugfucker be able to change his name to something like say "Bogglebug" or "Wagglebug" and avoid the whole racism issue?

Just curious.

I actually didn't know much about copyright until I did a Google search just now.

But to answer your question, she would be able to make the name change, but she can't claim a copyright on the character because it's still following in vain with the original Wogglebug.
Essentially, while the Wogglebug is in the public domain, public domain rule states that while it's free game for use in derivative works, no one can actually place a copyright on it because technically technically technically Baum's family still owns the original copyright on the character. It's like if Star Trek were in the public domain, some nutter got obsessed with it, and to make it sound more interesting, renamed it to Planet Quest while keeping everything about it the same.

My sauce:
The term “public domain” refers to creative materials that are not protected by intellectual property laws such as copyright, trademark, or patent laws. The public owns these works, not an individual author or artist. Anyone can use a public domain work without obtaining permission, but no one can ever own it. An important wrinkle to understand about public domain material is that, while each work belongs to the public, collections of public domain works may be protected by copyright. If, for example, someone has collected public domain images in a book or on a website, the collection as a whole may be protectible even though individual images are not. You are free to copy and use individual images but copying and distributing the complete collection may infringe what is known as the “collective works” copyright. Collections of public domain material will be protected if the person who created it has used creativity in the choices and organization of the public domain material.

So even though the copyright expired on the wonderful land of Oz, it's still protected from idiots like WobbleStub Lover taking complete ownership of particular elements of the story. So she's basically full of crap when she says she has copyrights on her stories because it doesn't cover the Wogglebug's copyrighting status. EDIT: Also, while she may have "original ideas," if these original ideas are found anywhere in the public domain, she can't claim a copyright on them either.

If there's anyone out there who works with copyright fairly regularly, please correct me if I'm wrong about anything!

This, cockroach person.... thing is fucking creepy as hell and after reading this thread a few days ago, I actually had a nightmare that mixed Freddy Krueger and this Wogglebug...thing. I'm only coming back into this thread because I find this lolcow fascinating.

Bugfuck's interpretation of the Wogglebug character is protected by copyright. She can't stop anyone from ever using the Wogglebug character again, since he's in the public domain, and she certainly can't do anything crazy like demand people stop reprinting the original Oz books because the character now "belongs" to her, but the elements original to her own story are hers.

Think of it like Maguire's Wicked series. He used elements that are in the public domain to set up his characters and world. Anyone who wanted could write another series about the politics of Oz, or write a book using the Wicked Witch as a sympathetic protagonist. The issue would be stepping on Maguire's copyright, not abusing the public domain material.
