I thought I knew this person from the style of their art, but no. It just so happens that a lot of artists nowadays draw with the same greasy style.

You gotta love how that HP artist slaps ethnicities on several charas on what seems to be pure whims (with the exception of Blaise Zabini [who iirc is canonically black in all HP media] and Black!Hermione [and that's because of the musical]), but VERY CONVENIENTLY ignores several actual POC's from the series. Where are the canon black kids like Angelina Johnson, Lee Jordan and Dean Thomas? What about Padma and Parvati Patil, who are Indian? Or a 100% canon Black Brit like Kingsley Shacklebolt? Oh heck, even a Chinese girl like Cho Chang?

I can forgive black!Hermione (save for the borderline mammy-like lips), but the rest is all kinds of NOPE.gif Such a fucking shame to see that they *can* draw, but other than that are they try so hard to be "woke" that they end up being really. fucking. racist.

Ughhhhh.

Firstly, how non white do they think the UK is? Its about 3 percent. That's a drop in the water. I literally have friends here who have told me I am the first black person they've met. And secondly, do ANY of those names sound vaguely non British? Like, Jesus Christ. His last name is Potter for godsakes. What Indian would have that last name? And Granger is a British last name and not one that's even associated with a British Caribbean descendent. This shouldn't bother me as much as it does but it really does. It's like ignoring the source material at it's core and just plugging in a bunch of non white people where they don't belong.

Iirc there was some post going around tumblr that suggested that the last name "Potter" was a corrupted version of some Indian name or something. Which was silly to begin with, and was later contradicted by Rowling's piece on the history of the Potter family where she specifically talks about the origin of the name.

Another part of the "Indian Harry meta" is that that the reason the Vernon and his sister disparaged the Potters was because they were racist. This is probably a good part of the reasoning behind black Hermione too--they can't imagine a situation where someone might be discriminated against that isn't about the racial dynamics they are familiar with.
