Study shows gun control would prevent mass shootings

Are they? Hourly? where are these mass shootings happening?

Did it really need a study to point out that less guns would probably = less shootings?

I know you americans sure love your guns, and england has never had much of a gun problem, but as far as I know, there has been one mass school shooting in the uk. It was the catalyst for banning all handguns and we haven't had any more. Seems pretty simple. The back and forth arguing about whether or not gun control would "work" is silly. It would, you just don't want to get rid of your noisy symbolic toys.

the confiscation thing is ridiculous, in Australia alone there were 350,000 SKSes and 500,000 M1 Carbines confirmed to have been imported for sale and only some ridiculously low % of them were ever turned in in the 90's. The estimate is that there are in excess of 3.5 million illegal "military style" firearms in Australia.

1) if they can't find 3.5 million rifles in Australia, how do you expect to find 300 million firearms (low estimate) here in the states.

2) despite having all these illegal "military style" rifles there has not been a mass shooting recently. Why?

Guns should be taken away from people who do not meet the mental qualifications that would be put in place. If you think anyone with any type of violent mental disability should be able to own a gun, then I feel very sorry for you.

Stop listening to the NRA. They are lying to you.

when you buy a gun you fill out a form 4 and have a background check performed that checks for any felonies, domestic abuse violations, restraining orders, and invol commitments on your record

if you want to curb private transfers ahaha good luck guy

People forget that eastern europe exists, and in most of those countries there is a rifle in every home (legal or not).

where are the daily mass shootings in the czech republic despite having a gun ownership/population ratio higher than ours?

The reason is countries like Australia, NZ and the UK never had America's fucking dumbass extreme gun fetishism and never saw guns as an integral part of their culture or "Freedom".

In countries like NZ, Australia, UK, Guns are simply viewed as a tool nothing more, nothing less. You want to get rid of pests? That is why you would have a gun. These countries also have far more collectivist cultures than the United States as well, so when something bad happens, society acts.

One of the big issues with the US is that the US was founded in the fire of Revolution and the 2nd Amendment was created with that in mind. The Founding Fathers of the US thought that basically if the US developed a military, it could lead to the creation of a Tyrannical state like England (They obviously thought of England like we think of Saudi Arabia or North Korea) and thus the 2nd Amendment was created so basically, instead of a military, the US could simply call upon it's own citizenry to fight if a war broke out or whatever.

Of course, this all turned out to be a load of horse shit, in fact, England basically became more liberal than the US.

In actual fact, the very first time the 2nd Amendment was ever invoked, it was actually used to call up a militia to PUT DOWN a rebellion of people crying about new taxes.

Either way the 2nd Amendment and guns have taken on basically a state-religion significance in the US and Americans are basically brainwashed to believe from an early age that guns are all that is standing between them and becoming North Korea 2.0.
Guns to Americans are not actually guns, they're "FREEDOM". The gun is simply a symbol for something else.

The hilarious part of all of this is that every time I tell Americans, if they care so much about the 2nd Amendment, then surely they should be for mandatory National Guard membership to be a part of Gun ownership since that IS the intention of the 2nd Amendment by the Founding Fathers. But that is always met with negativity or silence.

Seriously if you believe that guns are freedom and are used to fight tyrannical Government, then go join the National Guard.

Of course very few actually do that because pretty much nobody actually believes they are going to use their guns to defend against tyranny or an invading army. The entire thing is a giant collective American national psychotic fantasy.

You then have America's retarded self-defence fetishism where everyone think's everyone else is out to murder them and you should you disproportionate violence in any case you feel threatened. This leads to deeply unbalanced Stand Your Ground laws.

On top of all of this you have lots of other issues

- Borders a violent developing nation. (Though the War on Drugs can be blamed in large part of this issue)
- America's violence fetishism
- America's culture of individualism taken to levels nowhere near seen in other developed western nations.
- America's lack of universal healthcare that means mental illness largely goes untreated
- America's inequality and poverty issue with leads to more mental illness and stress.
- For the most part It's easy as fuck to get your hands on firearms compared to other Developed Western Countries.

America is just the perfect storm of shitty cultural issues, national collective psychosis and shit policy.
Countries like the UK, Australia, NZ, France etc just don't share all these issues.
The gun issue in the US could be solved, but it would require a giant massive multi-pronged policy assault at a variety of issues across the entire society which Americans just wouldn't put up with honestly.

(Note: I'm not actually anti-gun, but I think sensible gun ownership should be in place along with a lot of other issues looked at like mental health support, Australia's gun laws are fucking stupid.)
