And I think their reason for their change is because they want more control over what and who they allow on their site.
Ironically I have an entire 32 minute video I never uploaded anywhere touching on Twitchtv prior tot he ToS and I think I can explain why they are acting now.
Let's go back to Justin.tv
Justintv was a new style, innovative in a way to produce content similar to Youtube. Live streaming. At the time, livestreaming accurately or consistently was expensive and hard to do. You did not have things like OBS or xSplit. People were using XFire and bandicam to try to force it to happen. Others were using new components called "Capture Cards" and software that were in beta testing. Justintv was used to stream mainly video games and was very small. Alot of the major streamers that exist today came from this time period and stuck to there guns.
Fastforward, Justintv prioritizes the concept of Competitive Gameplay and becomes TwitchTV. The idea was to get sponsorships, pitch to investors and others who would interested in the concept of "E-Sports" prior to the name ever being used. It worked, Soda companies and tech companies decided to promote certain aspects of this. Now because the Focus point of Twitchtv was video games and ONLY vidya. This meant that if you acted out just an inch, you would be instantly banned. There was no room for fuck ups, the staff and its team had to be on top of its game in order to impress the bigger fish and sell out.
In comes the bidding war event between Google, Apple, Microsoft, Valve, and Amazon. Amazon won with a bid of 1 Billion fucking dollars, half of it in bonds & shares. This is when I think things began to change.
To the public, Amazon made it clear that they would not interfere with the way twitch is run and simply wanted the assect for the connections alone. Allowing Twitch's team to stay and use Amazon's servers. Yet, the actions shown by twitchtv speak a different tune.
First, came Creative and IRL sub sections, Amazon prime and the concept of Amazon Ads for the games being played. Something that completely was against the ideals of Twitch to begin with. Causing lots of streamers to become indifferent to what was going on. Reality was, Amazon told them this is what they wanted and it makes sense, it allowed tv shows like Bob Ross to come back and make money, making twitch money, making amazon money and giving them more assests to work with in the long run. Show wouldn't work on Amazon TV? No problem, push it to twitchtv, "we will get money regardless". At the same time, Major business companies involved with amazon jumped into the "E-Sports" craze, turn it into a Billion Dollar Industry of Entertainment. This meant that TwitchTV's new team and concept was strictly becoming more lucrative as a business. Money and earnings became the new slogan for Twitch and Amazon showed them the way. Tittie streamers? Who cares! Staff can fuck those girls at Twitchcon and get free blow jobs from them in order to make sure they get prioritized! We are Rich now! Shit streamers? Who cares! they make us money!
What happened due to this was a somewhat uneasy push back from the Old Guard of sorts. People angry that twitch was not twitch anymore. That the Nepotism and Greed was causing issues within the community. Add to this, the ease and explosion of many others wanting to be the next big streamer and you have an oversaturated marketplace. Twitch staff knew this and there response was the Affliation Partnership. This though is not the proper answer, the correct answer would be promoting new streams but that is not the way to make more money. Taking viewtime away from their top streamers would hinder them. This leads us to the "Face of TwitchTV" DrDisrespect.
If I had to show someone the future of twitchtv, Id show them his channel. He has officially set the Bar for where you need to be in order to be the next popular streamer. Creating a fake character and playing the most popular game with add-in CGI and catch phrases similar to literal TV shows and you have DrDisrespects channel. Noone up and coming will ever make it big unless they can gain internet fame from other mediums prior. He made it impossible to compete, Ironically he had to take a break because at Twitchcon he ended up doing drugs and fucking twitch streamer girls. It was insane to hear as he almost lost his family due to this but thats how bad Twitchtv and its staff have become.
People became more tired of the way things were being run and wanted to complain, ironically twitchtv has never had any type of forum or feedback system to listen tot he community. Essentially twitchtv did what twitchtv and Amazon wanted, the community did not matter. Now with all of this led to a civil unrest of sorts within the community. With no way to compete on twitchtv and many others tired of how things were being run. Amazon most likely told Twitchtv to revamp the ToS and start showing the community they are "Listening". This new style of Hands-on "Anti harassment" Campaigning is the result of this.
Twitchtv has missed the fucking ball and the problems within the community because they listen to the corporations, sponsorships and amazon because of Money, rather then its users who like the services. This will blow up in there face but until then people like DSP and others will eat heavy shit UNLESS they are hot as fuck and suck a good dick.
