University of Wisconsin campus proposes elimination of majors such as English, history. https://tiny.iavian.net/m44n

University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point is reportedly discussing a plan to eliminate 13 majors including English, philosophy, history and Spanish.

The campus — one of 11 campuses in the University of Wisconsin system — would instead focus on programs that have "clear career pathways," The Washington Post reported.

Under the proposal, the school would expand areas such as marketing, management, graphic design and computer information systems — areas that "have demonstrated value and demand in the region," according to the school.

The school's administration is framing the idea as a way to increase its declining enrollment and to deal with a multimillion-dollar deficit, according to the Post.

Faculty and students, however, plan a sit-in this week at the campus administration building to oppose the change.

The plan needs to be approved by a campus governance committee and the University of Wisconsin system's chancellor and Board of Regents for it to take effect, according to the Post.

“To fund this future investment, resources would be shifted from programs with lower enrollment, primarily in the traditional humanities and social sciences,” the school said in a statement.

“Although some majors are proposed to be eliminated, courses would continue to be taught in these fields, and minors or certificates will be offered.”

lmao, everyone who went six figures in debt for a degree in a field that's been replaced for free with spell check is a lolcow.

Do they still have retarded courses like gender studies?
Of course, allow me to show you.

Gender Studies has a clear career pathway. Gender Studies to McDonald's employee.

Something something those who forget history are bound to repeat it. Now with that out of the way, isn't it the tiniest bit concerning that a public university is openly admitting to wanting to shut down degrees related to the curation and maintenance of our culture and the recording of its history because they they don't have "clear career pathways" (i.e. aren't profitable enough)? Must everything in this nation lead to employment at a corporation? Look, if they want to ditch communications, I'm ok with that; I've never seen a smart person select that major in my life. However, studies like philosophy, history, and languages are necessary to understand the human race and the differences between the nations. History majors in particular are essentially to a thriving society. Recently, the UK announced that they had an insufficient number of Russian history and cultural experts to assist the government in dealing with any future threats from the nation.

Only in America, do people go to college so that they can work at Wal-Mart. And people sit there and wonder what is wrong with our "education" system.

There, I made it even more accurate

Fake an Autism Spectrum Disorder and free stuff for life. I shit you not, that's how messed up our government is. Hell, you can even get money for OCD I think, but my source isn't 100% on this particular case.

OCD counts on the Military and Civil Servant disability scale, but only out to like 5% iirc

To be fair, it sounds like a satellite campus, and specialization with specific schools is a good thing.
Yeah I like the idea that there's a satellite University for people who want to learn fields that have jobs, honestly.

Yeah, I find myself a bit torn on this one. On the one hand, it's a satellite campus of a large state university, and it really isn't uncommon for those to have a particular focus in certain families of programs (like a campus that's known in the region for being a "teacher's college," for example). On the other hand, McDonald's jokes aside, we do need the humanities, and a state school option generally would mean a student who wants to study, say, history has the chance to do so without paying so much money for an expensive, private liberal arts college (doubly so if they happen to live near the public school option and can just commute from home).

Some state schools (Penn State comes to mind, for example) have satellite campuses where, while a full 4-year degree program for a certain major might not be offered, completing a course of study there for two years is technically equivalent to the first two years at the main campus, and students can finish their degree there. I wonder if something like that would be a viable compromise for UW if the Stevens Point campus wants to focus more on technical fields.

Still, the main campus in Madison is probably full of nuts who orgasm at the thought of eliminating English and history because of course it's racist.
I bet they want everyone to speak a mix of Native American languages. Then again, that'll be cultural appropriation.

Wow, so it's 2018 and you guys are finally creating a system like Australia's TAFE?

I don't think it's worrying at all.
People that think the current university about anything more than making money are probably knee deep in the useless degree meme themselves. Cultural preservation is great and all, but college is not by any means the keeper of the Eternal Ameriburger Flame and society at large shouldn't think going to university inherently puts you more in touch with the American spirit or any nonsense like that.
If you really think institutions of higher learning are necessary for philosophy, I'm not necessarily opposed. Just remember that Plato's was free and exclusive, and stop trying to fix what apparently wasn't very broken.

But you can get a career in any of these subjects. It's just outside of being a high school teacher (which is actually a different major), expect to spend many, many years in school and paying way more than a four year degree. These liberal arts programs should come with giant warnings on them. Maybe require some sort of lengthy exam to get into to make sure people know the damn subject and are interested in it enough that they might want to spend their life studying it.

They're getting rid of a Spanish major? Lol so much for the Latino minority.

I disagree, I think it's reasonable for a technical focused school to offers majors in the humanities and social sciences. You can get a degree in theater, anthropology, literature, or history from MIT even though that's obviously not their focus. Plus they'd still be offering 80% of the courses, so I can't see how they'd be saving that much money, especially when their budget deficit is 4 and a half million dollars.

Stuff like this is going to keep happening as enrollment goes down due to there being fewer young people. There's a lot of podunk state universities that aren't going to be open in 15 years.
