TGWTG "Nostalgia Critic" / Doug Walker, Rob Walker, Mike Michaud, Mike Ellis, Holly Christine Brown, et al - The Incompetent Predator-Protecting Upper Management of Channel Awesome, Doug Still Not That Funny

I never understood how this company was to last long term, though I admit, I am quite ignorant to making money with video blogs and things like this.

I read on wikipedia that in 2009 "the site earned more than $10,000 per month in advertising revenue and received more than $11,000 in online donations." That sounds good but it isn't that much to pay and operate a media company long term. It isn't profit. With the decline in online ad revenue across all internet media, I must imagine that things were incredibly difficult to make any consistent quality or to grow the company to a sustainable entity.

It just seems like the company expected to never organize or grow effectively besides praying the next moron through the door strikes gold until they burn out.

All of the videos on the site were hosted by Blip who had more lucrative ad deals. So there was no need to pay for a server farm or anything. Plus they only paid one person (Holly) to maintain and update the site.

How the site still exists is the big question.

It's become clear that CA needs to do two things if they want to remain in business:

1 - Buy the IP rights from Michaud and ask him to step down.

2 - Start renting the studio space to other productions (after some upgrades e.g. soundproofing the fucking thing)

Neither of these things will come to pass.

1: should have happened years ago and I doubt it will happen now. Michaud will go down with the ship and if he has majority ownership of the company then the Walkers can't do shit other than separate.

2: they should sell the fucking studio. It's a huge waste of space considering the kind of projects the Walkers do.

Oh they made plenty of profit. Here's the thing, they didn't pay the talent. They paid in "exposure" from being rubbed at Doug's buttcheek. They literally treated every single content creator like a nigger picking cotton out in the field.

Unfortunately they won't do that either. Red Letter Media has a studio but they actually use it to shoot more complex productions. The Walkers don't do anything that couldn't be shot in their living rooms.

Let's hope the stress of CA dying won't put stress on Brad's new marriage.

Also someone mentioned it early but I felt the need to expand. Why was Malcolm the one who addressed the controversy? Malcolm doesn't have a show on that channel (Like Tamara's never seen, Walter's Top 10 lists, or Jim's prop making vids) the most Malcolm has done other than act in reviews is record the making of videos that haven't been a thing in a long ass time.

My guess is that he just wanted to throw his two cents in on the controversy and share his own experience working with CA.

Either that or Mike, Rob and Doug forced him to put it out there as a tactic to showcase that "Hey, here's someone who says we are a pleasure to work with! We aren't the asshole these people are making us out to be!"

That's the thing: CA never had a solid business plan or model. The people who run it (Rob, Mike, Doug) or did run it in the past (the pervert Mike or Bhargav) were simpletons who had no understanding of how to actually run a business. If they actually knew what they were doing and were smart businessmen, the website would actually be a huge success and not up in flames as it is right now.

Asspies loved loved loved CA back in the bad old days, and even now like 10 years out of it, you see them left and right begrudgingly confessing that now they're done with the site. They'd been watching this dogshit for years on end.

If anything I would say that if they had the slightest bit of business sense, they had a goldmine that likely would have been as profitable now as it was in 09. Their revenue wasn't videos, it was making mouthbreathers feel like they had cyber friends.

Is there still a market for CA fantard thirst?

Doug himself or screamy reviewers?

As far as Doug, he seems to be as popular as ever, with his latest video getting like half a million hits it's first day and a dislike bar that doesn't look like one that someone embroiled in a controversy "should be" getting. Mr Walker and his own patented brand of videos seem to be doing just fine at the moment, and if the initial dramabomb didn't harm him, he might be good for a while.

The rest of the guys? And "angry reviewing" in general? Probably not. Like they themselves said, this was before YouTube exploded and every jackass with a phone wasn't vlogging, and and out of "character". Certainly possible for them to continue making a living, and for newer people to build their little brands, but CA was the "hub" for a lot of people to find that kind of shit. With it being relatively easy to get on YouTube now, with hundreds of people getting started by the day, I highly doubt anyone who wasn't already a big dog at this point will be getting anywhere close at any point.
