TGWTG "Nostalgia Critic" / Doug Walker, Rob Walker, Mike Michaud, Mike Ellis, Holly Christine Brown, et al - The Incompetent Predator-Protecting Upper Management of Channel Awesome, Doug Still Not That Funny

JO only had two bullet points in the document (which I believe makes her section the shortest of the document). Her points were basically a lack of detail account of how she "bravely" stood up to them and fended off being fired. Compared to everyone else and the stories that they shared, her's just seems so full of shit and came off as nothing more then her trying to portray herself as a tough guy. If she actually has some chat logs chronicling their abuse, why not release it like everyone else already did?

The big double whammy in all of this is that I have to take Lindsay's, Hope's, and other assorted good and plenty's word for it in this whole Channel Awesome debacle. Am I denying the things that happened? Absolutely fucking not, but that's only because 4Chan and other anon websites had all this shit figured out years ago. The confirmations going on are just that; confirmation. Add in the fact that some people *COUGHLINDSAYCOUGHWOWWHERE'DTHATCOATHANGERCOMEFROMCOUGH* are pretty much guaranteed to push their political ideology into this whole mess just to feed into their egos and you have something where no one comes out clean. Sure, it sucks that Channel Awesome sucks, but people like Lindsay and Hope and Dan Olsen are fucking kidding themselves when they say this had anything to do with shit like GamerGate or harassment.

Doug himself or screamy reviewers?

As far as Doug, he seems to be as popular as ever, with his latest video getting like half a million hits it's first day
Wich is a reprise from a couple weeks ago. did he edit anything to it or are we playing "forgetful elephants" here? I can't wait for a fully new episode after this ordeal, "knowing him", he'll probably start up dramaticly announcing something and then "AAAHAHAHA FUNNY jOKES! I WUZ TALKING OTHER IRRELEVANT THING!"

By the way, what's the instance of "criticizing the site" Michaud wanted to fire her for? Was that when she made an account on Something Awful to gossip with goons?

I wonder if the Walkers were planning for future failure, or expecting to be able to use CA forever. Mild powerlevel but I know someone who had a small mainstream media role, and he put every spare penny which didn't go into living expenses into various investments, so he'd have money ticking over for when viewers lost interest/sponsors dried up.

This actually raises an interesting question: why did Doug sign his rights over to Mike in the first place? Why would he ever think that's a smart thing to do?

So, when it comes to protecting or registering an IP you need a big chunk of change. In the UK this runs easily to £5k per item and I suspect its similar in the US as well. So Michaud likely offered up the money to handle that side of things and the Walkers either didn't have enough at the time, or didn't realise they were giving away a huge amount of leverage to Michaud who later turned out to be an asshole.

It's entirely likely "this guy can ruin me any time he wants" runs at the forefront of Doug and Rob's minds every time they have to make a difficult choice. Hence "complicit" in whatever shitty decisions that are made.

1: should have happened years ago and I doubt it will happen now. Michaud will go down with the ship and if he has majority ownership of the company then the Walkers can't do shit other than separate.

2: they should sell the fucking studio. It's a huge waste of space considering the kind of projects the Walkers do.

Unfortunately they won't do that either. Red Letter Media has a studio but they actually use it to shoot more complex productions. The Walkers don't do anything that couldn't be shot in their living rooms.

I can guarantee you Michaud will not let the NC IP go for anything less than a million bucks or more, he'll either be doing Lowtax style "based on its heyday" figures in his head, or what he suspects could be made out of it if someone competent and funny was doing it.

The critic has a lot of brand recognition that is really not exploited at cons or other events that would provide an excellent additional revenue stream. Linkara knows how to do this with his own stuff despite the crap he's done in the past and while his live shows aren't the best, they're consistent.

Second on the studio, I agree. But a lot of other "big" youtubers have also gotten themselves studio spaces or other shared houses on the basis they'd want to collaberate more frequently and have a separation between workspace and home space. This logic has worked out nicely for a lot of larger groups of YTers (Red Letter Media, Mega64, Yogscast, Rooster Teeth etc etc) but each of these guys have also been willing to diversify said space as much as possible in order to max out the use of said space.

RLM used to use their space for wedding shoots and equipment storage, Mega64 had a tiny unit mostly used for storage.

Rooster Teeth wound up massively diversifying their content to the point new spaces became necessary.

Yogscast's new Yogscast Studios operates effectively as a Youtube Space for gamers and you can rent out their units if you so wish.

Basically time and time again people look at ways of best using the space. Renting the studio space out would make a lot of sense but either nobody would use theirs (Doug films in that tiny ass broom closet of an office for a reason) or their own productions would get in the way all the damn time and piss off whoever used it.

I'm actually surprised CA hasn't had a larger problem with weird fans in parasocial relationships, but then again I think the advent of vloggers, Twitter/IG personalities, etc. who post about their lives more candidly may have steered more folk in that direction.

Like I think the only contributor I've seen have to warn about "if you're a fan, remind yourself you're a stranger to me, you know more about me than I know about you, I'm not your friend" is Lupa. Which seems odd at first, since she's not one of the top-tier contributors you'd expect to have this problem, until you remember she's more of an open book than some others (active Twitter and Tumblr presence, very candid about her special interests, once did a video tour of all the memorabilia in her house) and it starts to make sense.

I remember long ago Spoony once had an incident where a group of fans he didn't know showed up at his house, and he then later made an angry post telling his fans that they're not his friends and they're not welcomed in his home.

It's a miracle that Doug and co have been going as long as they have with as little effort into improving things as they've put in. There are so many creators who have come up in the time since those early days and have surpassed them in both followers and quality. The fact that CA barely scrapes a million followers says a lot about how poorly adapted they are. They've made no effort to use the space they've rented, no effort to see what is trending and popular, and no effort to adapt to Youtube culture as it changes. Even if this drama happened they'd probably be irrelevant in a few years anyway.

The low budget home movie thing used to work when there weren't standards in the business. Relatively low and easy to meet standards, but still standards. All of Doug's props and costumes still look like they were thrown together the day before, and his skits all seem like they were first drafts that badly needed revising.

And regarding Malcolm's response, that was totally tone deaf to the problems. He came in after the bulk of the mismanagement, sure, but was part of the core Chicago cast so of course he'd never run into the problems with management that they did. There's a difference between being an employee and being independent talent. And considering the unrest still apparent with the remaining creators, the issues are not gone and the website is not any better run.

I have a feeling Channel Awesome will keep limping along for a little while before it gets the merciful shotgun treatment. I should have expected this, I just didn't expect it to be so sudden.
I was expecting it to happen sooner, actually. Between the mismanagement, possible money hoarding and general incompetence of Mike and Rob (even with Doug), it's amazing how no one did this mass exodus sooner.

I'm gone for all of 2 days and all hell breaks loose. Anyone care to catch me up?

TL;Dr: A Google Doc was released chock full of allegations, that point to the walker brothers being a pair of incompetent/complict fucks and Mike Michaud being a complete asshole.

Also a bunch of people quit and I had a half a pizza for dinner.
