TGWTG "Nostalgia Critic" / Doug Walker, Rob Walker, Mike Michaud, Mike Ellis, Holly Christine Brown, et al - The Incompetent Predator-Protecting Upper Management of Channel Awesome, Doug Still Not That Funny

Actually, if Doug spins it in a right way, this could work. Right now barely any accusations are directed towards him specifically, all the hate is towards Michaud. Doug could easily start a crowdfunding campaing to "save the Nostalgia Critic IP and give it back to the people" (or some similiar bullshit), painting Mike as a villain. His most spergy fans would eat it up.
I wouldn't even be surprized if that would happen with Michaud's blessing. As you've said, he's not in a position to negiotiate, getting a reasonable amount of money to safely jump the ship and be done with all the fuss might be enough to peacefully get rid of him as a CEO.
Then again, all of that might be possible if Doug had a spine. That or Rob takes the initiative.
It could work if he's trusted with the money being used for that purpose. The Pop Quiz Hotshot debacle doesn't inspire much confidence in that though...

This was NOT an easy decision to make. I hold Rob & Doug in the highest regard. They've been two of my best friends for the last 10 years.
Very subtle, PC way to say "Fuck Mike Michaud".

For most people yes, but remember that a shitton of his fans just put fingers in their ears and ignore the whole scandal. Even though their YT channel is hemorrhaging subscribers, it didn't put a dent in their view count.
Besides maybe I'm a cynic, but I think when the whole thing quiets down and CA returns to its default obscurity, most of their remaining viewers will forget about the whole thing, or at least focus on selected issues, like Michaud's mismanagement or Ellis' predatory behaviour, ignoring anything else (like the embezzlement that you've mentioned).

After Demo Reel, I think Doug is reluctant to take chances doing anything besides Nostalgia Critic.

If he sold it as "Nostalgia Critic 2.0: Independence Day" he wouldn't be lying if he spent it on whatever as long as he kept putting out NC.

more than half of everyone involved is an easy to discredit loser that wouldnt have been able to get the ball rolling on their own

Nah, they could have easily just said their bit back when it actually mattered. They obviously had money and "fame" on the mind at the time.

They don't need CA anymore so they're using its corpse to advance themselves. They ingratiated themselves with CA until it was no longer necessary.

Continuing the USSR comparison I made earlier:

Khrushchev wrote in his memoirs that Beria had, immediately after Stalin's stroke, gone about "spewing hatred against [Stalin] and mocking him." When Stalin showed signs of consciousness, Beria dropped to his knees and kissed his hand. When Stalin fell unconscious again, Beria immediately stood and spat.

At this point they should refigure the website to be solely focused on the Walkers' content (a'la The Cinema Snob and Phelous websites). You can't be a "community" if you only have 3 producers.

They could rebrand it. "That Guy With the Glasses" sounds like a good, descriptive name.

If Dong wants to save it, the best he could do would be to break from Michaud and start an extremely-similar-but-legally-distinct web series. Maybe learn about actual Fair Use and turn it into an autistic screaming version of Half in the Bag. :optimistic:

I could give a shit what Doug does with his Nostalgia Critic shit (haven't watched him since he rebooted it), but it's a suggestion.

I personally think it's a bit :autism: to hope, or even expect Channel Awesome will "die." I'm just enjoying the shit show while it lasts.

I do believe a likely outcome of this is them rebranding "Channel Awesome" in some way (Maybe downsizing to just the Critic), if only for the stigma.

Side note, this random dude brings up some pretty good points:
I thought Asalieri was dead, how fitting that he appeared out of nowhere with a video related to the CA scandal.

At the very least, Channel Awesome could recognize that, awful as they may be, YouTube won, and proceed to use the website accordingly as a backup archive and fan hub.
That is a good question, what point is there to the Channel Awesome site now? Back then it existed when youtube didnt see the value in reviewers and would just obey strikes

The fan document is still up as far as I can tell.

Still reading it, but this part caught my attention.

I was new to reviewing at the time and one of the issues I had at the time (and sometimes still) was figuring out what to review next. So I decided to ask Doug how he picks what he reviews next for Nostalgia Critic. He told me that he doesn’t pick what the next NC review was but rather it’s chosen for him (presumably by Michaud?). I was kinda shocked and confused to hear this. I don’t know if this is still the case but I think it might be a fact worth noting for this document.

The person only mentioned a date of 2008-2009 for work, so I'm assuming this happened sometime after that. But man, Doug just seems to be unable to or isn't allowed to plan ahead.

Will this have a lasting effect? I dont think so.

I call it shedding dead skin. Their concept of a reviewer network died in spirit when they ceased doing anniversary movies, Blip tanked, producers started to leave, the rise of Patreon made ad clicks less of a threat and CA's simultaneously declining revenue made them less profitable to work for.

As the ex-producers said many times over, it was always about Doug. This drama has finally shattered the fiction that it was anything but. The effects of that aren't to be understated. Materially speaking, losing producers will further dent their revenue and make Michaud and Rob redundant since they have nothing left to manage.

That last point is key. If Channel Awesome dies, it's because there's no more reason for the company to exist.

A lot of people are talking about the views on Doug's latest video and saying it means his popularity won't decline, but it's been like a week and Youtube is not designed for sudden shifts in subscriber count. Remember that most of the kiddies on Youtube don't even check their subscriptions page and only go by recommendations. With so many people leaving CA, their viewers will get less recommendations for the Nostalgia Critic, with people unsubscribing they'll be less likely to be recommended videos from him, and once the controversy dies down the drama whores will stop checking his videos for view counts. Doug was already losing fans, this is just gonna accelerate the process.

Whenever a controversy like this happens, all you gotta do is put out a half-hearted apology, and then the new attention you've got will make up for all the viewers who are still pissed at you. Hell, they'd need to put in less effort than anyone else, since this is all old behind-the-scenes stuff. Doug could come out and say "Hey, I wasn't aware of a lot of these allegations, and for the stuff I messed up I've been trying to improve over the past 5 years or so. I'll talk with Mike about being less of an asshole and communicating better, and try to be less of a spineless autist." He didn't even do that, primarily because he's a spineless autist. Instead Mike decided to fan the flames by putting out the most nothing statement possible. And so subscriptions are gonna keep decreasing until the views start to follow and he's either gonna do something for once or fade deeper into obscurity. It's not gonna be as quick as we might like, it reduces the chance of a big meltdown, but such is life.
