Europe's air traffic control network has warned commercial aircraft to avoid Syrian airspace due to a possible strike being planned in the next 72 hours.

DEFCON has been lowered to 4 over reports of military amassing air forces and the potential risks of a Russia vs. U.S. conflict.

Supposedly the British RAF is on alert in Cyprus.

There's also unconfirmed reports of the U.S. moving missile cruisers around in the Mediterranean and aircraft in Eastern Iraq.

If this actually does end up blowing up and the great flames completely obliterate everything humanity has spent the last thousands of years working for, I just want you guys to know that you are all awful, reprehensible garbage and it has truly been my honor to spend these last 5 years shitposting alongside you.

I love you guys :heart-full:

A nuke slug-out is unlikely. The USA and Russia have traded insults and proxy bullets for decades.
I can think of no incident that would lead to either leader opening their doom button suitcases.
Not to mention, I've been reading, and apparently, the US is informing Russia about the plans.

Syria is definitely not worth starting WWIII over. Trying to think of a country that is.

One in a strategic location or has important strategic resources like Iran (supplies oil to various countries, is near Russia), North Korea (borders Russia and China, has nukes), a variety of Eastern European countries and Baltic States due to their proximity to Russia and Europe-proper, and Taiwan due to its contested status.

Yeah, it was something like that, but in Russian.

So in other words, this may be a similar event to last year's attack, only with more countries deciding to join in. The only question remaining is whether the UK and France will be in the know or not.

I don’t think May or Macron want to be the leaders that drag their nations back into the Middle East. UK and France will probably just provide the use of bases for logistical purposes.

Well as Syria used to be a French territory at one point, France naturally wants to intervene.

The UK will probably just allow the use of their air base on Cyprus, yes.

I have no response other than wheezing laughter. Nobody's going to know what in the Hell is even going on over there anymore, and then he just follows it up with a slap for good measure. Let it never be said he doesn't know how to hog a spotlight, and so few people are ever going to understand why he's doing it.

At this point I'm pretty sure Trump and the military operate completely independently.

That's actually not entirely untrue. He delegated a significant amount of the way that the military operated over to Mattis some time ago, but nobody really paid it much attention.

The military no longer has to report to the President for every little thing they do now, unlike they have been doing for quite a few administrations. More often than not people took the opportunity to paint that as a negative, but even Trump himself said something along the lines of, "You really expect me to know how to conduct a military operation better than graduate from West Point?"

Frankly I'd just appreciate it if they could pick a narrative at this point. Is a brutal dictator with a murderous military and a giant, red Nuke button or is he a bumbling, careless idiot for letting the military off the leash and out of his control? They seem to flip the narrative every other week, and it's making me dizzy.

You have to wonder if this shit is an actual ploy by Trump - He is (apparently) utterly unpredictable and foreign intelligence agencies hate that. It makes it near impossible to form any ideas of how such a leader will react if their own Country acts in a certain way.
