TGWTG "Nostalgia Critic" / Doug Walker, Rob Walker, Mike Michaud, Mike Ellis, Holly Christine Brown, et al - The Incompetent Predator-Protecting Upper Management of Channel Awesome, Doug Still Not That Funny

This slipped my mind: At some point in the last few weeks they removed that shitty cartoon banner at the top of the site. I knew there was something especially lifeless about it beyond the empty dropdown.

Sam Biddle, for those who don't know, famously said "Bring back bullying" in regards to Gamergate. I'm pretty sure he was a Gawker writer who lost his job because of that.
The dumbass did it during Bullying Awareness Week too, if I remember right. Just... no foresight with these people. None.

Holy fuck, finally up to date on this thread again. It's incredible how much the hole CA's digging just churns out more content for this shitshow.

And if we're going way, way back; One of the classic quotes about comedy that's attributed to what must be dozens of comedians is that "Comedy is Tragedy Plus Time" which might tie into why Doug's weird mindset had him thinking comedy was misery... Or just a fundamental misunderstanding of why something's funny, which is an achievement for an entertainer like him.

Really, as a kiwi already mentioned comedy can be based off a number of things; Subversion, a change in status, or the sort of social humour you normally see in basically any form of 'classic' comedy. In a lot of those cases the humour isn't actually from the fighting/violence/disappointment/misery itself, it's just an effective way of telling a joke... At least, in the majority of cases where humour has a target.

Or that's what I'd think it works like compared to Doug's mindset, not like that actually means shit here.

Does Sam Biddle have a page? I forgot he existed if I'd ever known about him, so he's pretty irrelevant, but it'd be nice.

I kinda miss the early days of the site when Doug made attempts at variety with various skits such as “Emo Joe,” “Melvin, Brother of the Joker,” “The Joker Practices his Scar Story,” “That Guy Riffs,” etc. The actual quality of these skits ranged generally from okay to poor but that’s beside the point. Once upon a time, TGWTG was more than just a review site. They had actual VARIETY in their early days and while not everything was great (or even GOOD), it had an odd sort of charm to it. I can’t really explain it, but it seemed less “artificial” if that makes any sense.

If I were to pinpoint the moment this odd sort of magic began to fade away, I’d have to say around 2010. I think that’s when they started getting bigger, and while reviews were always at the forefront, that’s around when it started being ONLY about reviews. I also think that the anniversary movies had a lot to do with this. While it was hellish backstage during the making of the first one, I’m sure that most of them were like “it’s okay, this is their first big thing and they don’t really know what they’re doing yet. Next time it’ll be better.” Then Kickassia happened and it wasn’t any better backstage, which I think served to disillusion a lot of the contributors.

Everything about this is absolutely the perfect storm. Just this one comment chain is a pièce de résistance unto itself. The mods are clearly no longer moderating comments, as evidenced by the fact that someone who posted the word "autism" as an insult hasn't had their comment deleted. Now, you might think that since he's so loose with the slurs, he must be an outsider commenting from within, possibly from 4chan as would be your natural assumption, stepping on the company's throat to make the death rattle squeakier, peeing on the headstone even, but no, it's a Nostalgia Critic fanboy blaming Channel Awesome's downfall on other fans for believing Obscurus Lupa over Mike Michaud. The not-limpwristed pussies then proceed to drop their not-pathetic, totally le ebin comebacks at their feet just like limpwristed pussies, at which point they swing and miss each other's high fives, only to have the wetest of all blankets wag his moralfaggy finger at them for combating a stereotype with another stereotype. Then another braindead hole appears to give a lecture to Travoltron on his literary misuse of the word autism.

And this is just the beginning.

All of my sides.

He joined the Chez Apocalypse clique first and that got him into Channel Awesome for a time (about one year during which he produced 6 episodes), until he was dropped for distributing CP, trying to drag Channel Awesome into Gamergate and being an all around liablity. Lindsay Ellis defends him to this day though, even in the #ChangeTheChannel document.

He’s also currently listed as Lindsey’s “Cameraman” on her latest videos.

Travoltron is right that 99% percent of Channel Awesome fanbase is autism. All you need to see is the Channel Awesome website, the subreddit, and TVTropes.

A self-aware autist is still an autist.

Probably because your minor complaints were so pathetic Mike tiddyfucking Michaud managed to prove you lied about the rape scene, and context shows you got pissy and left over someone who had the cops called on them for downloading literal child porn as part of a limp-wristed sting operation.

Oh look, Todd's popped up in the comments. What a shock..

"and yet so logical in hindsight"

Sure Todd, keep judging black people for daring to have their own opinions on race. I'm sure a multi-millionare like Kanye just loves hearing from basement dwelling bloggers that they have more power than he does because they're white.

End of Evangelion
So like... the main character, Shinji is totally unlikable, masturbating over an unconscious person and starting the apocalypse. But that's not even the worst part. What is with all the crosses? All this symbolism is unnecessary, and why try to get science involved? They should just say it's magic, that'd be way easier. What does LCL stand for? That's never explained. Also, the music for Asuka's fight was way too gentle. It wasn't fitting at all. Why does Rei suddenly become so large? Why does she transform into Kaworu? Why is Shinji okay with letting everyone else die and become part of the great plan? Actually, what even are they doing? It just looks like they're becoming orange soda. It's really stupid and cheesy. Also, the persons Rei takes the shape in before transforming other characters into orange soda are never explained either! Maybe it has some significance, but it's never explained! Then there's this random live action bit that totally interrupts everything and breaks any suspension of disbelief you might have had. And it ends so ambiguously, with Shinji, choking and crying. Why not just state what happens to them? This is a terrible movie, I have no idea why everyone loves it.

I fucking needed the smile this gave me. EoE is my favorite anime movie, and I mentioned a while back wanting to see something like this. Thanks, lol.

Doug's got an exaggerated version of a core of comedy. "Comedy=Suffering" is a bit exaggerated. While it's true that a joke is typically at the expense of something, be it someone's time, dignity, or wellness, that expense is generally less "suffering" and more "cause and effect".

It's called "The butt end of a joke" for a reason. Something is receiving that "butt", however that doesn't necessarily come at the expense at present company. Look at it this way;

Two guys are sitting in an office. One of them tells a joke about female drivers and they both laugh. The "butt" of the joke are female drivers, but in present company, neither of the guys were subjected to suffering, yet there's still comedy to be had. Doug's rational that "someone has to suffer" is this taken too literally. In the context of the example I provided, Doug probably would have had one of the guys chocking on water or something and called that the joke and that's his problem. It's almost like to him, a joke doesn't register or count if it isn't blatantly conveyed, which is actually kind of an actual wrong way to approach comedy.

That’s part of the problem? I get why they added her - wanted the full list - but they ordered it in a way that seeminly put everything on equal footing.

Although that still doesn’t excuse all the other shitty things that Michaud has done that he can’t refute.

I fucking needed the smile this gave me. EoE is my favorite anime movie, and I mentioned a while back wanting to see something like this. Thanks, lol.
No problem. This thread got dark, so it’s good to remember that we’re here to laugh, not to angst too much.

Someone who claims to be above race is in fact a racist, what a shocker!

I'm guessing you watched it with subtitles, and stayed for the scene where Shinji decided to masturbate in front of Asuka's comatose body.
He's also wrong. It's not "logical in hindsight", Yeezy's been a little contrarian shit-stirrer for fucking ever.

Like Todd all of a sudden just realized he's been doing that? Goddamn dope.
Todd is illogical and has zero hindsight. Todd's never been bright either, considering he is a seamonkey who openly thirsts over Lindsay Ellis. I swear, that bitch can melt the brain of those who thirst over her.

Its funny, cause just based on some of his older reviews I've seen, he's a major Kanye fanboy, but he's the kind of person who always has to exclaim that he thinks Kanye is a terrible person despite liking his music, as if anyone really gives a shit.

I'm betting if Kanye were white Todd would probably hate his music purely for SocJus points.
