All their newer art is based on an avatar someone whipped up in 30 minutes, and they got so awestruck by actual creativity they dumped (probably, honestly) $500 a month into it going on years. (I also heard they commissioned art of themself third-wheeling their IRL brother's relationship or some shit)

Depends what age of 4chan-in-SL you're talking about. Currently it's plagued to death by Twitch-chat'esque people, and prior to my explorative times it was as 4chan elitist and exclusive as you'd imagine. In the middle it was relatively comfortable, and even those who clearly went around ERPing rarely showed up for any events, so might as well not have been in the group.

For some reason being angry and wanting to argue with everyone lays really close to ERP. It's like that love/hate connection; go onto f-list, a site meant for ERP, ask about anything loaded with opinion and you're bound to start a war.

So right now on Twitter, the arguments for CaliFur going tits up are:

- Leftist Furs are blaming the Alt-Furry for it
- People are correcting them by saying that "lolnope, there were issues for years even before alt-furry was a thing, what are you talking about"

I'm not 100% on the up and up of Califur's history, but it sounds to me like it was becoming Rainfurrest 2.0: years of inept leadership and organization that built up over the years, slowly reaching the breaking point in various ways. Alt-furry's antics last year and this year were basically the straw that finally broke the camel's back and the hotel just didn't want to deal with them anymore.

This would be the part where I express optimistic hope that maybe, just maybe, having two long-running conventions being cancelled would spur the furry fandom into some self-reflection to figure out what went wrong and how they can fix it in earnest... but they don't fucking care, they just want to have parties and break shit like they always do at these things. They're never going to change at this rate.

Huh. Still saw a very distinct change in the commissioned art style after his SL avatar changed to be more closely based on that I guess. Regardless still comes down to yet another art-addicted mongoloid not even being able to produce their own work without the assistance of others.

Seen it a few times with people who end up getting free art by being 'popular'. They bring a horrible concept to a great artist, making the first depiction of the character way better than it deserves to be because an artist managed to grind shit into a diamond, and then proceed to get hailed as the next big deal and get tons of free art.

Regardless Sponty had a few one-off designs I'd consider decent, yet continues to get the exact same thing done over and over. I'm even moderately convinced he started up a second account exclusively for another character, but that too is just the same concept with nobody else/strangers from the same Hardblush artists.

They've been trying to make a v2 for ages with VR support and all; trying to keep that idea of it being a social space alive. It'll never go right with all these single moms playing SL on their laptop at 15 fps having to get an even better computer.

I think you’re right and it’s a sure bet this is years of mismanagement, furries being bad guests, and poor image and relations finally coming to a head with one final incident being used as the catalyst to take action.

From my limited experience with hotels and convention services I know that some calls and complaints just aren’t enough in and of themselves to get the event booted; hotels depend on cons and other events for profit and are loathe to have a weekend without booked events, it’s a major loss.

That said, I do wonder what other furry cons are on their hotels last nerve and will capsize with a single incident.

And I will admit that I shouldn’t feel so much schadenfreude over Califurs misfortunes but, I am enjoying this. Years back Califur shared a hotel with a wedding and there was much childish furry butthurt when the hotel put up drapery to block view of the con. If nothing else I’m hoping this is a bit of karma at work.

There did seem to be mismanagement or something going on, but evidently it was not enough to tank the con. Not until the AltFurry dumbasses pulled that harassment campaign and made the hotel get antsy enough to do what it did. No way was CaliFur going to be able to find another venue without some real pros doing the con work.

Losing the hotel was the deathblow, and Altfurry were at least the catalyst to the whole situation, even if they didn't cause the myriad of other problems CaliFur was having behind the scenes.
