These are the kind of things you'd see in a fever dream, the ones where you have a temperature of 105 and you're on the verge of death.
Just what Homestuck needed, a trans character.
then come the black with vitiligo head cannon redesigns and the single pasty ginger redesign. and of course they're all ~~neurodivergent~~~*New troll character is trans*
Homestuck Fanartist: Oh shit! Better draw a picture of the character wearing clothing that literally says "I'm Trans" on it!
Why are they like this?
If I'm remembering it correctly, there wasn't publisher issues, but I think you're right on the part about pressure from the fans. The artist had dropped comic projects in the past before dropping Hanna, and I think they got overwhelmed with the popularity of Hanna. There were videos of HINaBN cosplay groups seeking out the artist at a con, sometimes even performing a song to them, and they just looked bothered. The newest comic project has been going on for two years or so, I think.IIRC the artist had some issues with their publisher, pressure from fans and then they just sort of disappeared and they’re now working on another comic. It’s kind of a shame because while pretty Tumblr pleasing it was still nothing outright offensive like the tropes in this thread. HiNaBN was pretty average as far as web comics go but it was still a breath of fresh air and had some good build up to expand on.
I’m almost glad it ended so abruptly though. If it had started during peak Tumblr we’d be seeing art of gay trans boy Hanna and Asian caricature Zombie.
I had to go check the blog that came from out of morbid curiosity, and
The tired eye thing kind of reminds me of the art of a long dead web comic Hana is not a Boys name.
It was really big on Tumblr when it first started, and than got bigger when it stopped for reasons unknown. The art wasn't bad, but I do notice some similarities with Tumblr art. It's like they tried to recreate it and it got mutated with other things.
Some people like to call the style 'kidcore' because to them it feels like an aesthetic from childhood, made out of a daycare's limited marker selection and RAD NOSTALGIA. It is also a handy excuse not to learn how colors work, because "THIS IS ME, THESE COLORS FEEL THE WAY I FEEL". A lot of the people who are into it are those 14-year-olds and soft trans"boys" who claim they are more like a big child than an adult. One of my bigger problems with these pictures is the color schemes. They sort of remind me of a cartoon called The Problem Solverz, where it's like the artist ate a whole box of crayons and vomited all over the drawing. The "art" becomes a clusterfuck of bright & obnoxious colors that don't mix well, which makes an already shitty drawing even more of an eyesore.
I'm not asking for art that looks like the first Gears of War game, but this shit is like a nightmarish fever dream.

There's drawing a character in your own style and still making them recognizable, and then there's mangling them beyond any recognition, making them look like an OC rather than the real deal
Tumblr made me hate the term "aesthetic" to be hionest. It can be used to describe anything and lost any meaning. Kidcore's not limited to just the artstyle, it's an aesthetic. It involves plenty of photos of toys, 90s stationery, and other things that are attractive to kids. Naturally this kind of material also attracts DD/LG people, so people making kidcore posts usually make disclaimers not to REBLOG THIS IF YOU ARE INTO DD/LG OR YOU'RE A MAP
And why they treat 90s as their childhood, people born in 2000 is now 18 years olds, those tumblr kids are 15.
Yeah its not the worst. But its just sad seeing so many artists racebend characters like this.
And the overlay could be because so many of those art tips mention uaing an overlay for your drawings. But combine it with shitty color choices and equally shitty drawings and it creates a mess.
