Serious question: how did Jim start out? Did he just suddenly emerge? How did he get a following? I ask because, despite being a fan of his for a few years now, I only discovered him when he did a video on DSP and pretty much hit the nail on the gouty head.

Jim started out going just after gamers on early youtube and doing his own gaming videos. Talking about gaming related stuff. Eventually got into other stuff. Gamergate probably got him big. You can see those videos above but he started going after SJWs also Also started trashing SJWs around that time. I guess it could've been a bit before but it seemed like his content went toward that direction around gamergate. His Tumblrism series is really just going after SJWs and the same type of victim mentality.

Based on previous live streams(Specifically the 2016 election stream) I believe he is from Minnesota. But he could've moved since then or he could've been lying.

I don't know where else to post this but we got a shitstorm going on right now that might turn into a Chinese New Year's firework. ShortFatOtaku and Scrumpmonkey did a livestream where the topic was Jim, in particular the internet "history" behind the man. As a guest they had an old pal of Jim under the pseudonym Latmin who was hanging out with him ever since the days of Bullshit Forums and Metokur.

Spoiler: Things I personally found interesting

• At the time of me writing this Jim is approximately in his late 30s. According to Latmin Jim always preferred to hang around people who are way younger than him instead of his peers implying that he has some sort of Peter Pan mentality going on. ShortFatOtaku even suggested how his girlfriend Jade is almost half his age.
• He has an established pattern of leaving the internet in a melodramatic way long before the days of Gamergate. The "Enclave saga" is worth listening to. Let's just say that Jimbo can be almost as creative as the couple that tried to catfish DarskydePhil. His execution though was way poorer.
• Whenever he states that he's going to nuke his internet presence it is just him dramawhoring, which I suppose everyone knows that this point.
• Scrump described Jim as a "glass canon" which Latman confirms. He is quick, witty and fantastic at dishing out but once his ego gets bruised he folds like a house of cards.
• According to Latman Jim hasn't evolved much in the last 10 years if at all.
• Hbomberguy was a very minor and unremarkable character during his days at Metokur.
• It is almost common knowledge that Jim always uses Habermann's pictures and lingo ("24 hour ops") as a means to troll him even years after he went MIA for good old lulz. Latmin however stated that there seems to be actually some personal beef going on on Jim's part. ShortFatOtaku commented by saying something akin to "I'm sure Habermann had let it go after all these years, so why didn't Jim?"
• While Jim's gimmick is to pretend to be a nihilist who watched way too much Rick and Morty, he does get personally and emotionally invested as seen with Habermann and lately with his involvement in the IBS.
• Ego is apparently a big theme.

During almost the entire stream Jim was mockingly tweeting about it which in absolutely no way made him made him look mad on the internet while Scrump was attempting to make him join for over an hour. At the end of the stream when Jim actually offered to join, ShortFatOtaku said he had to go, but rescheduled their talk with Jim for the upcoming Friday.

So the situation is as follows: Jim is so totally not mad guys, everyone is laughing at ShortFatOtaku for having to leave which made him look like a pussy, Jim's fans and some folks of the IBS community such as Ralph are going out of their way to M'Lady for Jim and if everything goes well we might have some actual bloodsports on Friday.
