Has anyone mentioned foot binding in China yet? Yes, it's more cosmetic orthopaedics than surgery but it's still horrifying.

First, her feet were plunged into hot water and her toenails clipped short. Then the feet were massaged and oiled before all the toes, except the big toes, were broken and bound flat against the sole, making a triangle shape. Next, her arch was strained as the foot was bent double. Finally, the feet were bound in place using a silk strip measuring ten feet long and two inches wide. These wrappings were briefly removed every two days to prevent blood and pus from infecting the foot. Sometimes “excess” flesh was cut away or encouraged to rot. The girls were forced to walk long distances in order to hasten the breaking of their arches. Over time the wrappings became tighter and the shoes smaller as the heel and sole were crushed together. After two years the process was complete, creating a deep cleft that could hold a coin in place. Once a foot had been crushed and bound, the shape could not be reversed without a woman undergoing the same pain all over again.

Imagine waking up in a hospital: "Hello insert-name-here, you were in a horrific accident that left you unconscious for several months. It's going to be a long road to recovery but on the upside, the facial reconstructive surgery had an excellent opportunity to heal. Insert-name-here? Are you okay? Please stop howling about your face being stolen and replaced with a fake one, and trying to claw it off of your skull with your blunt fingertips." I think for koreans, its all about looks and status. Your looks do play a part in how people perceive you over in Korea. To the part that a lot of job applications require you to send a picture of yourself just to see if you attractive.

Plastic surgery is part of Korean culture. It's absolutely normal for kids to be gifted plastic surgery as high school graduation gifts. Looks and how you're perceived is really important over there.
