It's okay, all the problems are solved guys. They've changed the name! Next year should be a resounding success.

Brilliant. A surefire plan for success.

I was gonna comment that the name EmotiCon is wasted on such a shitty convention, since it's a really cute name...and then I got to the part near the end of the article about there already being a con with that name.

Wow, just...wow. I'll be amazed if anyone buys tickets, honestly.

Oh don't worry, there will be (considering how many morons attended Dashcon and all).

So another con claimed EmotiCon. Would that mean the people who tried to rename DashCon to EmotiCon will face lawsuits?

I don't know... For Dashcon 2014, 1,000 people showed up at a space that could hold 7,000. So that's 14.2% capacity, let's round generously to 15%.
Unique attendance of Gencon 2014, held at the Indy Convention Center, was 56,000, and that's probably near maximum capacity.

A paltry 15% of 56,000 is 8,400.

In order to reach 15% of capacity, Dashcon 2015 (Let's call it what it is) needs 8,400 people from a pool of three groups: rubes suffering from Stockholm syndrome after 2014, neckbeards coming to sneer, and dopey kids that somehow have no idea what sort of disaster they're walking into. There's no way the Dashcon people will get that many, much less enough people to make it worth leaving the lights on.

I love conventions. I attended several this year, ranging from 500 to 25,000 attendees, and in various capacities -I volunteer frequently, and am sometimes a panelist. I love conventions and will go out of my way to enhance the experience for others.

I would not attend Dashcon. Not for free, not even if they paid me -assuming they had money to pay me. They had one chance to make a good impression, and they didn't just disappoint, they failed every way possible. And then they blamed everyone else. There must be something better to do that weekend.

Like watching the fallout from Dashcon?

What burns me are the people defending Dashcon. Not from a "Rarrrgh must protect tumblr" standpoint but "you know, some mistakes have to be made."

Yes, mistakes can be made, there's certainly no law against that. But there are certain things you just don't ~do~ running a convention or hell, any event.

Out where I live, this guy ran his first music festival and in the process, ran out of money to pay a good number of folks, including but not limited to the electrical and theatrical workers' unions and a fantastic pub that catered the food. The pub was fairly new but very well-loved in the community. It helped revitalize a kind of forgotten historical area and serves really boss food. The owner took out a loan to pay HIS employees since they had been shorted by the festival dude. The community started organizing cashmobs, where we'd literally descend and buy beer and food.

You really can't underestimate how much an institution matters to a community. The support helped the owner out after he'd taken out the loan to pay his employees. After I'd worked in retail for 4 years and had countless friends working server jobs, it really says something about the owner who helps out his employees.

And where was the festival dude during all of this? Selling tickets to next year's fest.

tl;dr: you can make mistakes but holy fuck shortchanging artists/panelists is incredibly shitty

There were ballpit cosplayers at DragonCon this year. I believe this

was one of them. There were a couple more I've seen; I'm trying to track down where I saw them.

Indianapolis is only about three hours northeast of where I live.

I'm kind of tempted to show up at this thing next year, in hopes that it's as big as, if not a bigger trainwreck than DashCon was.

Even then, that sounds like that would actually be fun. DashCon- sorry, Emoti-Con is pretty much the absence of fun, if it'll be anything like its predecessor.

Oh gee wilikers guys I bet EmotiCon will be super fun!
I'm gonna google it right now…………oh right, poor choice of a name.

Guess I'll just host SLORD-CON!!!
The convention for shitlords. There will be booze, meat, live country music performance, a firing range/gun show, an antique/luxury car show and SHITLORD PRIDE!
Trigger warning: fun

Coming Summer 2015, I'll shoot for NYC but we might have to settle for Providence or Hartford.

Edit: Just realized I described a state fair…so go to those.

I'll do you one better: I'll host Ballpitcon! The convention center will be a big ol' bouncy house, filled to the tits with balls!
