Two 8-month-old pit bulls that were loose in Nanaimo attacked several children, severely injuring at least one. Other people that came to aid the children were also injured.

The children were playing in a yard at the house of one of their friends. The dogs were from somewhere else in the neighborhood and had been cited for being at large previously.

One of the owners of the dogs came and got the dogs but did not stick around. The news interviewed the other owner, a Dangerhair that looked to be in her late 40s or early 50s. While she was devastated at what her dogs had done, she said to the reporter, "People are saying, look at this from the prospective of a parent, well, these dogs are my kids, too," and then she broke down crying.

It was later reported both dogs were euthanized, as there have been other incidents prior to this one, and due to the severity of the injuries the one particular child sustained.

To the dangerhair dog owner I would have to say, "If these dogs were your KIDS, you did a lousy job of raising them. Thank heavens you didn't spawn any of your own."

I’m sure this will result in more unfair discrimination against pit bulls. There’s no proof this wouldn’t have still happened if the attacking dogs had been a different breed and everything else had unfolded exactly the same.

There's been a rise of pitbulls attacking kids lately in my area. Even babies arent safe from them.


I love the breed but I hate how these incidents happen especially when it could have been prevented.

But you always see these attacks caused by the pitbull owner allowing their dog to roam free thus they attack anything small like a cat, puo, or kid and lock their jaws on it for dear life.

Human aggression is actually against the breed standard for pits iirc. Animal aggression can pop up (which is something pit owners need to be aware of ), but human aggression is a sign the owner is doing something completely wrong and/or the breeder was shit. Lots of popular breeds, imcluding golden retrievers and labs, have aggression issues due to the latter factor as well.

Backyard breeders and puppy millers tend to shit up any popular breed by churning out as many puppies as they can for profit with no regards to breeding quality animals, hence you get fucked up dogs that attack people and have a shitton of health problems.

But most of the time any other breed goes berserk and attacks people you usually hear about an injury of some degree and rarely about a fatality. When a pit bull goes nuts, it is almost a given that someone will lose a limb if not mauled to death. There definitely is something that needs to be done, I am not necessarily talking about an outright ban, but at the very least some form of restriction for ownership or special (and very severe) punishment for incidents.

Pit bull is kind of a catch all term for "any dog with a square head." Part of the reason attacks seem so high is dogs being misidentified as pit bulls.

Shelters, especially government contracted ones, are full of pits and pit mixes because of owners like this. Instead of being responsible they just hide behind ‘oh my sweet snookums wouldn’t hurt a soul’ without realizing the needs the breed has. So then renters say you can’t have them and they wind up at shelters.

Which means there’s already places chock full of these dogs who either can only be sent to rescues, not adopted out, because they have a history of violent behaviors. It’s no good for anyone, people or the dogs.

And even a no kill or low kill shelter will have to euthanize if they have a court order, so nobody can say that is a helpful ‘solution’ either. Once a dog is ruled dangerous that’s the only course of action left.

People who don’t train or take proper care of their animals are truly exceptional. It always ends up with someone getting hurt.

If this dangerhair wanted a low-maintenance dog she could just coo about being her widdle baby all day, she should have gotten a Maltese or something. Like a lot of others, I’ll grind my heels firmly in the ground defending pit bulls and pit mixes against breed discrimination, but there is still absolutely no getting around the fact that certain breeds do have specific needs and not all of them are low-maintenance. Pit bulls are descended from terriers and bulldogs (look up “bull and terrier” dogs for a bit of history) and still more or less have the energy/need for space and exercise of a terrier and the musculature of a bulldog. If you’re going to own a pit bull, you need to be prepared to give it absolutely everything it needs in terms of space, exercise, and stimulation. This is especially true given how strong pits are and how much damage they can do if they attack.

They can be and often are just as loving and wonderful as any other breed and I’ll argue until I’m blue in the face with anyone who says otherwise, but they are a high-maintenance breed nonetheless. Again, if you just want a precious little fluffball and you aren’t prepared for the rigors of owning a pit bull, you are selfish for putting the people around you (especially children) in danger and for taking in a poor dog you aren’t able to provide for. I do feel terrible for these two dogs here, but not because they dindu nuffin, but because they’re puppies who wound up with a selfish and irresponsible owner who didn’t train them and stimulate them. With a breed that is both very muscular and high-energy, this is often the tragic outcome.
