New York (CNN) Anthony Bourdain, a gifted storyteller and writer who took CNN viewers around the world, has died. He was 61.

CNN confirmed Bourdain's death on Friday and said the cause of death was suicide.

"It is with extraordinary sadness we can confirm the death of our friend and colleague, Anthony Bourdain," the network said in a statement Friday morning. "His love of great adventure, new friends, fine food and drink and the remarkable stories of the world made him a unique storyteller. His talents never ceased to amaze us and we will miss him very much. Our thoughts and prayers are with his daughter and family at this incredibly difficult time."

Bourdain was in France working on an upcoming episode of his award-winning CNN series. His close friend Eric Ripert, the French chef, found Bourdain unresponsive in his hotel room Friday morning.

Wow, that really sucks. Bourdain seemed like a very cool guy and fuck if he didn’t have an awesome job. (Travel to all kinds of places to eat their best/most interesting food, drink and tell ppl about it.)

He seemed to have a good outlook of life in general. He had a certain sensitivity I always noted and loved when writing about people and he championed poor, 3rd world, rural people sometimes looked down on by others by writing about their great qualities. All that, sadly, makes me think he might have struggled with depression. People who are genuinely empathetic to the pain or indignities of others can have tendencies towards depression.

He had been a punk rock heroin addict working the prep line in kitchens decades ago. I wonder if he was still struggling with addictions?

The no hesitation about reporting it as a suicide leaves me to believe he hung himself or slit his wrists. They won’t usually confirm suicide was the cause unless it’s a totally obvious when found. I always figured an old dope fiend would at least enjoy going out via an OD.

Just confirmed suicide by hanging. I'm wondering how you called that. Do you believe death by hanging gave him that "one last high", considering his heroin abuse that goes back 30 decades...? Or do you think he was still struggling with addiction under the radar?

Someone who made jokes about poisoning and killing Trump, offed himself instead.

With that being said, the chef in me did enjoy "No Reservations"

He also said Hugo Chavez was "a benevolent dictator". His show was decent but he was kinda weird in real life. One of those old guys who still thinks he's 20.

I'd say it's more likely than not if that's his history.

This sucks. Anthony Bourdain was awesome and one of the few good things that CNN still had going for them.

I loved his Parts Unknown show, especially the episode where he went to Japan and interviewed Toshio Maeda of all people, that was funny. He also interviewed a local hard rock band in the same episode as well and that was cool.

He will be missed and my condolences go out to his family and loved ones.

Because if it was pills or gun there authorities and media will not definitely say suicide. With an OD they will say “suspected suicide” because intent isn’t obvious, a gun could be murder, usually only a hanging will be reported as a suicide immediately with no hesitation.

Also, in my experience, people who have contemplated suicide usually choose hanging. David Foster Wallace, Kate Spade, L’wren, Robin Willams, Chris Cornell, etc all hung themselves. It can be done almost anywhere and doesn’t require any preparation - like buying a gun or obtaining drugs. It can be acted on without any prior preparation, like late at night when things can seem their most bleak when you’re alone and depressed. Several of the ppl I mentioned did it with a door knob, so it could have been quite impulsive.
