Yup, Phil mutilated himself, and put himself at grave risk to show us a few gross photos. It's like a 12 year old printing out a picture from orgeish (is that even still around?) and hiding them in a text book of a class mate, but instead of burning some color printer ink, Phil seriously altered his "healthy" body for the rest of his life and probably shaved years off his life span and now has permeant repercussions.
