I am surprised, too. I would expect the people who make derivative children's faerie stories for an audience of callow "adults" who refuse to grow up and take an interest in more sophisticated culture to be intelligent, cultured, and respectable. I guess I was wrong there.
The old schoolers actually were. They were middle class family men. Some well educated, others self taught but always learning. Their driving goal was to create good sellable stories that put a roof over their families heads. Other than Satan Lee probably the best documented of the old schoolers on camera was Frank Frazetta. If you get the chance watch the full length Painting With Fire documentary on him. It really brings home the difference between the old guys and these modern twits.
