Math is often referred to as the language God used when he created the universe, and for good reason. It's an all-powerful, constant force which we witness everywhere. Math is cold and unfeeling, and grounded in reality, yet we see its influence in everything. When calculus was first discovered, it was actually uncovered by two separate people on separate sides of the planet, one in England and one in Arabia, with the two men having no contact with one another. Math is consistent, a force of nature, and a tool. So when this guy sits here and types:



It shows he believes that "masculinity" and the lack of ethics is somehow an artifact of an unstoppable, constant force of nature. These concepts that he's tying into mathematics are strictly cultural and irrelevant to mathematics. Math is a tool. As a tool, of course you can use math for the wrong thing. You can use a hammer to build a house or to crush somebody's skull. But you can't "redefine" mathematics without defeating its purpose, in the same way you can't make a hammer out of cushions and be able to strike a nail. Stop trying to baby-proof math.

The idea that you see a group of people struggling to understand mathematics and you believe it's math's fault is absolutely absurd. Math doesn't care, and math wasn't "fabricated" or man-made. If you want to point fingers, then start blaming yourself and academia for failing to present math in a way that these groups who struggle to understand it can learn from. Of course, you won't because that requires you to take responsibility, and we can't have that when it's easier to just blame something else.

Also I like how he says math "valorises" rules, abstraction, reason, and analysis as if those are bad things.

Day after day I tell my students that if I teach them maths it's not because I think they will all need to use functions or vectors in their future, a minority among my students will actually pursue a scientific career and most of them will forget all of my lessons in the next few years (or days for some of them)... but because learning maths is learning how to think in a mathematical way : pure, straight to the point, rational, always backed up by proofs. Just cold logic.

It's not the only way of thinking a normal person need to have to be a proper adult, but it's one way of thinking everyone need to experience at least once. There are times when emotional intelligence is needed. And there are times when pure intelectual logic is needed to solve a problem. But of course for the pure sjw, critical thinking is the ennemy because they all see the world through an emotional lense. In doesn't matter what logic has to say because emotions always prevails in their minds.

Maths is a tool which has allowed mankind to understand and describe the world for thousand of years. It's thanks to maths that we can study the world around us and beyond ours stars : biology, chemistry... maths is everywhere. Maths is also a tool which has always allowed mankind to be abstract. We were once only capable of counting sheeps and being interrested in what we had to eat. But now we can think about infinity, about what is nothingness. Maths even allowed Einstein to lay down his theories...

I know a lot of people don't like maths because "it isn't useful at all in real life" or "it's too complicated"... but man not liking maths because of the patriarchy is maybe the dumbest reason I heard.

I think much of the issue with people's perception of math is due to the teachers. Teachers who get it can explain why things are done a certain way. If the teacher is just reading off a textbook and doesn't actually understand it, the students will perceive it as being arbitrary, which turns a lot of people off it.

The truth is, it's as far from arbitrary as can be. But it takes understanding.

I also think they should teach basic logic in school. Like, teach kids what an argument actually is (It's great to show people the difference between and argument and a statement) and show them how propositional logic works. If B and C then D. If A then B. If A and B then C. A. D?

Obviously the schools wouldn't go for this, since logic is the last thing the administration wants, but it would make for better politics...

1. It is not the job of mathematics to teach ethics, just as we don't eat beef in order to think of chickens. Saying math education causes "ethics-free thought" is like complaining that eating beef causes "chicken-free thought".
2. A whole branch of Ethics, Utilitarianism, is predicated on the possibility to calculate and optimize good and evil. Not only does Professor Ernest know nothing about Math, he knows nothing about Ethics either.

He even argues that since money involves mathematics, math is "implicated in the global disparities of wealth" because math students are taught to value "detached" and "calculative" reasoning.

He has no logic sense. It is like saying the academic studies of lipids result in the global obesity epidemic.

The most frequent complaint I hear from kids (and unfortunately some adults with Humanities sympathies) is "did you ever use a trig function in your life, or log scale? or all those angles inside the circle? huh?! Why waste our time learning these when they have no use?!" This is not the point of learning mathematics. The point is that learning a branch of mathematics allows you to conceptualize things in a new way, and shows you that some problems can only be solved if you have learned to look at it with a certain mind set. The is why all these math concepts are is useful to you: they give you the mental toolset to look at the world.
