For curiosity sake I decided to look up a movie that I enjoyed from the past (and kind of obscure in history) and the results are not pretty.

I think the one that made me really angry was:

The Heartless: The id monster.

I don't understand how anyone can take this site seriously or find it fun. Its a bunch of people cracking wind and breathing in the fumes.

Only in part. Apparently, they got some intense complaints the site sucked ass to view on certain mobile devices, hence the redesign.

I'll be honest, the overall UI is more responsive and scales better to mobile, but it's otherwise caused a clusterfuck of issues with site stability.
As long as they get rid of those stupid ads that redirect you from the page you were on, I’ll be good with anything

So many heartwarming moments found in a cheesy monster movie.Normally this wouldn't be that big a deal but there is some unintentional hilarity when reading that apparently fighting to save monsters you created makes you the better person? And not suicidally moronic for some reason. Also apparently the ending of the movie with the dinos released is a good ending??Yeah if you like getting eaten by raptors its a lot of fun i guess. Its kind of funny what tropers consider heartwarming.

    • The Walker brothers themselves got caught up in controversy in late March 2018 when complaints of mistreatment by their upper management, up to and including allegedly turning a blind eye to a rape committed by one of the site's producers, came to light. For his part, Doug did offer a sincere apology for everything, but the apology came too late. Every new Nostalgia Critic episode since the controversy began getting thousands of dislikes even when his conclusions are relatively uncontroversial, as before then, the main reason for episodes getting over 1000 dislikes was when people disagreed strongly with his views.
  • Channel Awesome as a whole became engulfed in controversy after a document titled: "Not So Awesome" came to the public's attention, listing numerous grievances with the company, including alleged aggressive and misogynistic behavior by CEO Mike Michaud, sexual misconduct allegations towards former CFO Mike Ellis and at least one producer, preferental treatment towards Doug Walker, which gave him a say in several corporate decisions, and reports of general mismanagement. The company's attempts to contain the controversy only made things worse, to the point where Doug was the only one to offer a genuine apology. Almost all of the content creators except The Cinema Snob and GuruLarry (who is only staying out of spite for the management ignoring him) have left, #ChangeTheChannel has trended on Twitter, and Mike Michaud lost all of his respect as a businessman.
LOL, they're still sucking Doug's dick! They must love the taste of utter failure!

I'm sure "overshadowed by controversy" shouldn't be considered a trope. Take DSP, for example, he didn't get his King of Hate moniker for "controversies" but rather for being a dumbass whiny bitch.

And even if someone discovers that people at Channel Awesome are involved with crimes like human trafficking, they'll still lick ol' Doug's boots like hell, as long as he makes some video saying "I'm sorry folks, I just work with idiots".

Nothing new below the sun, and the mental gymnastic they do in order to protect their precious Nostalgia Husbando always amaze me.

I kinda disagree, not with your logic per se, but on how "Overshadowed By Controversy" isn't a trope.

It should be controversy pertinent and relevant to the work's reception that should be counted, not merely the creator being a twat, there is that whole "separate art from the artist" caveat.

For instance, a valid case of this would be how Gustave Flaubert's 'Madame Bovary" was overshadowed reception-wise at the time of release due to the offense it caused Victorian era morals, rather than anyone focusing on any other aspect of the work or the intentions of Flaubert when he released it for public consumption.

Otherwise, I agree it's not tropeworthy to mention how DSP is a whiny bitch if his work doing Let's Plays can be separated from any controversy based on that and judged on its own merits as a creative work.

It's like how Hitler drew legitimate artwork that can be judged independent of his political views, but the politics he espoused overshadow his other talents and many cannot look past that when judging his artwork, even though it is possible to objectively critique his drawings and paintings while otherwise ignoring his politics, which were generally not represented in his artistic endeavors.
