Video Game Recommendation Thread

I would personally give Fall Out: New Vegas a try. Granted there’s a lot of lore that’s to be had in prior games, but it’s still a great stand alone game. I can’t begin to tell you how many hours I’ve sunk into the game, and am actually on my 4th or 5th playthrough. If you decide on this one, I’d heavily recommend getting the DLC’s. They are some of the best add on contents for any game imho.
Hah, I should really have included the fact that I've thoroughly smashed out Fallout 3, NV and 4. Good shout though - NV is the best 3D Fallout.

Ah well shit. In that case, my coworkers been talking about a game called Wasteland II. It’s the “spiritual successor” of the first two fallout games. Might recommend that.

Sounds like you need a bit of Transistor in your life.
Or it's better and older sister game, Bastion
I'm fairly confident that I've got both, but may not have given them a full chance. I seem to remember Transistor having a rather smug talking sword?

I'll give it a look, thanks.

I was also really stoked (and subsequently really stung) by Shadowrun - I had incredibly (and probably utterly unfeasible) high hopes for it, and, well, we all saw how that turned out.
Which one? Dead Man's Switch aka SR:Returns? If so, I would recommend you give Dragonfall a try, it's SO much better than DMS.

If you like RPGs there's the less known gems like Underrail and Age of Decandence.

Otherwise I'd recommend Hollow Knight if you haven't played it. One of the best games in recent years.

I've got the Dragonfall expansion, and still found the gameplay and writing to be fairly weak. TBH, I was probably still a bit raw from the sheer disappointment of the stock campaign. I'll take a look at Hollow Knight - I'm getting a pretty strong Super Meat Boy meets Limbo vibe off of it, which definitely appeals. Underrail and Age of Decadence left me a bit lukewarm on first look. I may revisit, though.

Dishonored as a series has tonnes of lore and backstory, not sure if you like steampunk, though...

Yes, that's a thing from Transistor.

You could go MMO and do Guild Wars 2? It's a nice mix of Sci-Fi and Fantasy with a ton of Lore built in. Unlike other MMO's I've played, you can do the rather long main story by yourself. If you're not interested in Raid/Group stuff, there's very little grind involved. You can actually spend a bit extra of money and get a P2Win pass now. Boosts you to Level 80 and sets you up with every bit of superior gear you'd ever need to do the entire story line quest from start to finish. You don't one shot things when you're endgame either. You're level scaled down according to the area you're in.

Dead space 1 and 2? If you've already played them maybe bloodborne? It's more lovecraftian than sci fi but still rich in lore and super replayable.

If you are not concerned about graphics then:

Star wars knights of the old republic 1 and 2.
Gothic 1/ Gothic -2.
Arx Fatalis
Dark messiah of might and magic.
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines
Drakensang (all all the others)
Betrayal at krondor (old game, gog.com)

Which Prey are you talking about? If you're playing the one that came out last year, you might want to try the original Prey that came out in 2006. Some of the mechanics are antiquated but it is still an incredibly fun experience.

Other suggestions:

_Observer - Probably the closest thing you'll get to Blade Runner until Cyberpunk 2077 is released. It's a game made by the people who did Layers of Fear, so while you might go into it thinking it's gonna be another walking sim, it's actually a pretty solid detective romp. Plus the main lead is played Rutger Hauer, so objections there.

Binary Domain - Came out last gen, very much a hidden gem. All about shooting robots, whilst waxing philosophical about robot's rights, free will, and all that fluff. Granted, the game was developed by SEGA, so don't go into it thinking it's going to be earth shattering insightful, but good golly is it fun.

Dragon's Dogma - Capcom's answer to D&D. Another last gen game, but they recently had one of those "HD remaster" versions release last year with all the DLC and patches. It plays close to all the usual fantasy tropes (dragons, goblins, knights in castles, etc), but the graphics and the character designs are freaking nice. Plus one of the more fun mechanics is the ability to actually climb onto larger enemies like some sort of deranged lemur. One of my favorite gaming memories came from me fighting a Griffin in game, jumping on it while it was flying away and killing the bastard mid-air and riding it down to the ground. None of that was scripted, mind. Open levels are a bit of a slog, but after the first few hours, it gets so much better.

I'd reccomend the STALKER series, its a fun FPS that will ream you if you screw up.

Then theres SHadow Warrior 1&2, which are fun and a throwback to 90's era shooters.

Transistor
Read Only Memories
Halo Wars 1 & 2
Divinity: Original Sin 1 & 2
Pillars of Eternity 1 & 2
Warframe
Earth Defense Force 4.1
XCOM 2

If you want retro, I can list that too ~

If you're into fantasy text adventures King of Dragon Pass is a nice little game that'll tide you over for a dozen hours or so. It's well written and on the cheap side on gog. It's pretty ancient software wise (It came out in '99 iirc) so it should run on pretty much anything.

Some really good suggestions here, thanks guys.

I've played the dead space games, pretty sure I clocked them, but it was a while ago. Couldn't get into bloodborne - it just felt like the game was working far too hard on not disappearing up its own arse to be taken seriously. I do play warframe periodically, but have finite time for grind, so I dip in and out a lot.

I have been trying to get into the ps4 cut of pillars of eternity, but while the game is a spectacular text slog on lore, it's a bit light on explaining mechanics, so it took me a while to get the hang of stamina vs health management. A relatively minor thing, but it really doesn't do the new players any favours.

The anti-weeb thing is because I have a really low capacity for cringe, and most weeb franchises that I've seen have it by the metric ton. I'm not overly interested in playing an effete boything that's saving the world through the power of prancing around in ridiculous clothes around a comically oversized boss that just comes off as ridiculously camp. I know that's a sweeping generalisation, but meh.

I'll take a look at all the games that have been suggested thus far, and see what jumps out at me. Definitely got a fair few to think about, which is awesome.

Here's some suggestions:

Singularity and Wolfenstein 2009 - Fun surreal alternate history Sci-Fi shooters, one where you shoot commies in an alternate timeline and the other where you kill dimension hopping mutant Nazis. Both can be found cheap at GameStop.

Bungie's Halo titles, Marathon - You've probably played them (since you mentioned Destiny) but if you haven't, Bungie's Halo titles are classics. If you've already played them, go download the Marathon trilogy and play them either on the Aleph One source port or if you're really hardcore, some old PowerPC Mac.

Shin Megami Tensei series (the mainline games and some of the spinoffs, like Soul Hackers) - Imagine a 90s JRPG that has gameplay mechanics taken from Western RPGs, such as stats and character alignments, with the aesthetics and story of a gritty 80s/90s cyberpunk anime. Oh and you can recruit demons too.

Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth - The only Digimon game that isn't crap, probably the closest thing to mainline SMT on the PS4. Hard mode can be laughably unbalanced though and don't even bother buying the sequel (it's pretty shitty).

Yakuza 0

This franchise is an enigma. At one moment, you're watching a serious crime drama. The next, you're in the sega arcade playing the crane game. You're fighting multiple enemies at once and kicking ass... and then you're dancing in the local disco. This is the essence of Yakuza; completely opposing tones come together and somehow just work.

This video basically sums it all up:

...oh, and the story and gameplay are both pretty good. I recommend Yakuza 0 specifically since it's a prequel to the other games and most people agree that it's the best Yakuza game.

also, @Rumpled Foreskin:

don't you EVER say "Fall Out" instead of "Fallout" again or i will personally come to your home and rape you
