Video Game Recommendation Thread

Necroing this thread, I want three types of game recs

1. Games which are similar to survival horror ie have a ton of exploration, combat and puzzles. The game has to be old, pre 2005 cause I really want the PS1 PS2 era graphical look.

2. Games which have a small but complex map, think Ocarina of Time, Majoras Mask, Dark Souls, FF7, Earthbound, Links Awakening etc. The kind of stuff which gets posted in cozy video game scenery compilations. These also have to be pre 2005, I want some stuff from 93-2000 somewhere between SNES and PS1. Not exactly open world but not disconnected levels.

3. Sim/Strategy games which are old and complex. Something like Dune 2000, Pharaoh, Cultures, Settlers, AOE, The Nations, Dungeon Keeper things like that. Pre 2010, can be niche if required.

I want them to be old cause I can run them and I think old games look good. Not too old like 80s old, mid 2000s should be okay. I cant stop playing such kinda shit, I want more, a ton more.
1. I assume you’ve played the heavy hitters like Resident Evil and Silent Hill? Fatal Frame on the PS2 is worth a playthrough. If you wanna go old school, check out Clock Tower on the SNES. Shivers is a good horror/puzzle game from 1996 on the PC that gets overlooked a lot. Goes for pretty cheap on GOG. Check out some of the other mid 90s point and click horror games like Harvester, Sanitarium and I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. The Sufferng is early 2000s but is solid. The first three Thief games have horror elements to them as well, and since you’re a thief not a fighter you’ll spend more time hiding and avoiding them than trying to take them head on.

2. Legends of Mana (and the SNES Mana titles) would be good. Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross are worth mentioning. The early Black Isle games are a given (Baldurs Gate 1 & 2, Icewind Dale 1 & 2, Planescape Torment) Soulbringer is a forgotten one from 1999 that has a great atmosphere. Same with Summoner.

3. Obligatory Heroes of Might & Magic and Sid Meyers Civilization series. Other good ones are the Age of Wonders series, Lords of Magic. Battle Bugs is a fun mid 90s DOS strategy. Sacrifice is an interesting one from the tail end of the 90s. King’s Bounty series as well. All go for dirt cheap on GOG

There are many on PS1.

Dino Crisis 2 is godlike, Dino Crisis 1 is ok. Dino Crisis 2 will also cover your second category because every piece of scenery is so beautiful and atmospheric.

Chase The Express is good.

Parasite Eve 1 and 2 are great in different ways. 1 is RPG-lite, 2 is the overt action-packed RE reskin.

Speaking of Resident Evil, only 1 is slow. 2 and 3 can very much be played like action games.

The others I have in mind (Fear Effect, Galerians, Martian Gothic, Alone in the Dark 4) are probably too slow-paced if you want action-heavy games.

That gives us, starting from the best:

Dino Crisis 2
Resident Evil 2
Resident Evil 3
Parasite Eve 2
Chase The Express

No bad choice. I would put Chase the Express second personally but that's because I'm so numb to these horror settings.
