Personally I think that when it comes to the alt-right Andy could get away by "playing Devil's advocate" or simply stating that he gave them a platform because no one else would. This would be true, if that was all that he did. I think it's a bit disingenuous to say that platforming/having discussions with people from the Alt-Right was the crux of his controversy (people like Sargon and Roaming Millennial have done that too). He also explicitly endorsed white identity politics and appeared to agree with them that an ethno-state would be a good idea as long as it's formed via heavy social pressure "non violent methods" and forced resettlement "monetary incentives." That's not even getting in to the whole "race realism" debate, in which he uncritically accepted a lot of hyperbole and pseudo-science just because it was coming from a self-described "academic" with a foreign accent.

Keep in mind, I'm not necessarily saying that Joe Rogan shouldn't have platformed him for these reasons, or that he would in any way deserve to be linked with the Alt-Right for doing so. However, the fact remains that he likely would face backlash for this, and could potentially have ended up with hit pieces linking him to white nationalists. I'm also not accusing Andy of being a full on white nationalist himself or even an Alt-Right member, but claiming to be a neutral host who's simply willing to platform extremists was an intentional misdirection on his part. I don't think that it's slanderous to say that he's personally sympathized with a large portion of the Alt-Right's ideology, and that he's tacitly supportive of policies that would be... harmful to minority groups, to say the least. I would mostly attribute this to stupidity rather than malice, but that's not going to get him very far with most people.

As for whether or not his format had the potential to work, I would say maybe. I do think it was important to hear what his Alt Right guests actually believed and how they rationalize it, even if I believe that the policies that they endorse are reprehensible. If he had actually done what he promised to do (foster free and open debate, even on the most taboo topics), it could have been insightful. Too bad he had to let his newfound Alt-Right leanings steer the way, become involved in endless trolling plans and inter-clique drama, and allow his scumbag co-host to almost entirely take the reigns.

And of course, you're right that all of this is completely irrelevant now because he's turned himself into a nobody, with like/dislike ratios on par with his former rival that he constantly taunted regarding ratings.

Well, that was interesting. I actually didn't know anything about Geekthulu going into this, other than that he's a guy that's been Andy's de facto cohost in recent streams and has been in the background of most of the drama for a while.
According to Joy Sparkle and others, Geekthulu has openly said that Andy is easy to manipulate, that he's "a NAZI propagandist and doesn't even know it," and that he's been intentionally trying to steer him away from everyone close to him. She even claims that he bragged about having been the one to convince Andy to fire JF, and that he's been driving wedges in Andy's friendships for months. Andy was extremely upset to hear this, to the point that he was unsure if he even wanted to see evidence proving it, because he considers Geek a close internet friend that he can confide personal issues with. However, she did eventually send him some DMs that she said contained evidence backing what they were saying, and after reading them Andy said that he was in shock and appeared to believe it. He's done more Sarkeesian centric (or at least stuff that heavily mentions her) than just those 12 videos. And Rogan came back at that too, just because he churns out a ton of content at such a high volume doesn't mean it makes it weird that a lesser percentage of his output is about Sarkeesian, it's still a significant amount of videos about her.
