Content creators in financial disarray after Patreon declines payments

Some creators on Patreon have been left in panic after finding that the platform has declined their payout for this month.

According to tweets from Patreon users, internal problems with the platform caused every single pledge to a creator to be declined. This chargeback also allegedly triggered credit fraud marks from banks.

Those using Patreon as a crowdfunding tool have also posted screenshots of their patrons' pledges being declined in bulk. This isn't ideal for creators relying on Patreon as a main source of income.

Yikes

Patreon is yet to comment on the issue. The last noise from the company was that it was resolving some connectivity issues.

I think we will see a lot of cow chimping because of this. Ready your salt reservoirs.

Just as it did (and does) with Youtube, thousands of people wiring their livelihoods to the whims of a fickle-minded company will produce drama ad infinitum. And Patreon's management is only going to get worse as the platform grows.
Anyone who puts all their eggs in 1 basket, especially with YouTube's recent demonetizing spree deserves to fail once it inevitably stops becoming viable when their audience gets tired of their content and move on, YouTube decides they're toxic and need to be taken off the site, or they just get too old to make the kind of videos they produce.

I'm not saying they should supplement their livable YouTube wage if they can spare a few bucks if they have a repair or something important (but if they're living Patreon payment to Patreon payment they certainly should for when Patreon fucks up like this again in the future) but should at least know a trade so they can get a job when they stop earning enough from YouTube to live off of.

Every month there's a new controversy about how shit YouTube is and how they're fucking their creators over that a shitload of YouTubers make videos on, but they still rely on it to live without having a backup.

It's not like this is anything new. "Famous creator dies of cold in unheated attic" is practically a genre. It's nothing new to Patreon or YouTube.

I mean, hell, there's movies with characters who were screwed once Vaudeville stopped being a thing.

Before Ed Wood Jr. died drunk in a friend's home, he wrote a book about how important it is for creators to have a day job.

ETA: Here it is. Hollywood Rat Race.

Poor Ed Wood. He died penniless after his movie career failed, forcing him to direct pornos. Then, after he died, his movies became extremely popular for being shit and he became a joke, laughed at for making garbage and wearing women's underwear by people worldwide.

Could have been worse. The poor SOB could have lived to see everyone laughing at his work.

Including me, because yeah, that stuff is hilarious.

I'm kind of hoping a bunch of ebeggars get shocked into going luddite autist over this and start begging viewers to just send them cash in the mail from now on.
I can practically the video Chris would upload with him explaining what to do. It would end with him accidentally sealing like $40 of his own money into an envelope and having to rip it open, all of which stays in the video, of course.

I tought that was the mo of this site.

If Patreon moves to the UK won´t all the P0rn accounts get fucked by their weird laws and draconian practises?

They've already cracked down heavily on porn so they're probably trying to get that family friendly image.

There are already plenty of alternatives to Patreon that cater to the porn audience so its no big deal.

I don't think patreon is internet welfare. That really elevates welfare to something it's not.

Patreon is consensual and patrons are getting something for their money. If they don't like what they're getting, they have the option to stop paying.

As far as I'm concerned, patreon is a 100% legitimate way to make a living.

It's like any other part of the entertainment business, just cutting out the middleman.

I'm not really surprised that this happened given that this isn't the first time Patreon has shit the bed (though iirc not in this exact way) and it probably won't be the last. When shit like this happens though, I'm pretty surprised at the number of people who still cling to Patreon afterward instead of getting their audience to donate either through a different platform or more directly like through Paypal.

As far as I'm concerned, patreon is a 100% legitimate way to make a living.

Technically so are busking and panhandling, I wouldn't exactly call those respectable methods of earning money.

I always thought of it as, shit I enjoy this person's thing, I would like to make sure that they can continue to make said thing.

It's a simple and easy to understand system. Continue to do the service that you do and people will continue to give the money for doing so.

I've always been more about buying t shirts and stuff because that's just me, but I 100% think that if you create decent steady content then you could be rewarded as such. I still consider it to be a more stable way of earning a living than twitch or adsense.

However you get people that try to buck and trend the system as you always will. At the end of the day it is YOUR money. You choose where to put it.

Panhandling no. Busking yes.

(Or, well, do you mean "respectable" in the sense that the quality of income is respectable? Or that the act itself is respectable? Busking gives you patchy income, but the act itself is respectable.)

And there's a difference between those things and Patreon, in that Patreon is a financial services company. (Or a "membership platform" or some shit.) They're supposed to get this right, in the same way that, say, ebay should get it right.

Like it's stupid to complain if you lose a bunch of patrons and can't pay your rent. That's part of being a starving artist. Likewise, if you're busking and it's a rainy day and the tourists aren't coming out, that's on you as well.

But it's a different situation when patreon's system fucks up. Or if you're a busker and got your day's take stolen from you on your way home.
