Living in proximity means that you get to know them as people and find out they aren't much different than anybody else. The poor, white and black, worked the fields together post Civil War. There is prejudice everywhere in the country, but Southerners were just more practical and real about it. Forced integration was an issue because things had always been separate for so long until the Federal government came in and decided to change everything for these people.

Can you imagine having a way of life that was always a particular way until suddenly the feds come in and decide to force something new on an entire region? And to make it even more difficult, they were forcing something that didn't effect the rest of the country. The vast majority of the country doesn't have the black population that the Southeast does, they didn't have to deal with it for the most part. They expected the Southeast to do something that they weren't comfortable doing themselves.

Most of the massive race riots in the 20th century took place in the North, this shows you the general attitude that the country had once integration started coming to them.
