It isn't that he does content no one else really does as all he does is generic popcorn movies with only barely doing B movies. The Escapist gave him a soapbox because they wanted to add people to their lineup that could compliment Yahtzee. Yahtzee was of course a far better entertainer and at his highpoint was an influential voice in gaming culture. On surface level they're quite similar in the "Angry Nerd gets candid" commentary, they fit in the "online magazine" format The Escapist was going for.

His audience were likely kids when they started listening to Bob, and now they're young adults who have some respect for him. I can only imagine they like him because they share the same obnoxious lefty views. For certain it's not his voice because jesus I just tried listening to his review of Hannah Gadsby and it was insufferable because he's still ripping off Yahtzee's "Zero Punctuation" delivery but with none of the emotion or comedic timing.
