Short Answer: The marketing department tells them it's a good idea.

Longer Answer: The marketing department pushes this shit hardcore. There's two general reasons for it; one is that there is a belief that white people will be a minority in the not-so-distant future and that if they can just tap into that emergent market, it will translate to all of the money. The other, far stupider reason is that Marketing departments are now completely occupied by the same ideologues.

You're forgetting the classic autism that many of these ideologues also believe having cartoon characters having the same skin color and/or sex as you will inspire and change the course of your life. So "#representation" is apparently some life or death shit.

As others have mentioned, they think that "representation" is important for one reason or another.

The problem is that original characters made with social justice in mind don't sell. That assume that popular characters are popular because they are popular characters. Thus is they make character X black, a woman, gay, etc. then that character will be popular and "the message" will spread.

When this backfires, there's always some excuse. An alt-right hate campaign, lack of advertising, lack of publisher support, or any other excuse. Or as @Krokodil Overdose said-

Another part of it seems to be that they want to destroy things that are liked by the people they disagree with.

And some of them are just so dumb that they don't understand what people like or why.

Most cities in the USA have white and black neighbourhoods. We can confidently say these people don't live in black neighbourhoods, and the people who do live there don't care about any of this.

The problem isn't even that. Nobody gives a shit if a character is gay or black or whatever. They want them to be well written as Meyer proved with the jawbreakers schlock.

The upcoming Devil Dog is going to draw on Meyers own experience as a vet and if he's smart also talk about dadt without being a complete twat due to DD being openly gay as mentioned upthread.
