I'm so fucking happy I first started posting on da. People on there can be really nice. I remember when I first began drawing digitally and someone gave me really good advice to improve and what program to use (I was only using Ms paint at the time). Really helped me out.

I knew about Tumblr before, but at that time it was only really known for rabid fangirls, Sherlock, Doctor Who, Hetalia, and Homestuck. I wasn't interested in those things so I avoided it mostly. Looking back know I'm so glad I did. At least in da people honest to god improve while the weird people just do shit alone. You also get great access to pro tutorials if you want to find it.

Tumblr just got even worse over time. I've seen people I've know get actively worse from following the Tumblr art style. Looking back I'm glad I didn't join then.:powerlevel:

People on Da aren't as closeted as people on Tumblr. The weirdos usually keep to themselves (unless their a lolcow) and the "SJW" shit isn't nearly as accessable as on Tumblr. At least on da you get exposure to everything while on Tumblr you can possibly be seeing the same shitty art over and over.

You can just go yourself and check the tags. Look up any fandom and the most popular art is 9/10 times a tumblerized version of what you want. I can only imagine how much influence that had on a native kid who only wants to draw something nice.

Most of the time these kids only really develop these egos because they think they're doing something right, that drawing this kind of art is honest to god "real" representation of minorities. And it's really just sad because sometimes it looks like they don't know any better.

If they got off Tumblr and met people who are minorities they've have a better understanding of them than just sitting around inside all day, drawing semi-questionable art.

Not to be a downer, but deviantart has gone to the shitter in it's own way. The popular page is usually around 60-70% fetish art even with the mature filter turned on, it's basically one step away from a porn site. There's little to no moderation anymore so you can post anything and nothing gets taken down or put in the proper category. There is no decent art websites at the current moment that don't have a shit ton of problems, trust me I looked.

tumblr: "distinct and recognizable silhouettes in character design? unique identifying traits? symbolism in outfit detail? aesthetic appeal? fuck you everyone wears cargo pants and rain boots."
>silhouettes
Slight tangent, but the way this point is talked about on Tumblr always bothered me. I remember a lot of users getting really butthurt when that CalArts.jpg got traction, there were quite a few people who decided to dispute it and, regardless of how you feel about the meme, a lot of the people defending it pointed to "muh distinct silohouettes!!" as a reason why all the art direction is perfect and flawless:

Problem is, that's not really what the silhouette test is really meant for, at least in animation. Sure, having details that make the character identifiable even when obscured helps, and in video games like FPS it's important to be able to tell types of enemies apart from any distance so the players can spot major and minor threats and make calculated decisions on their approach. But for animation, the silhouette test serves a completely different purpose. Namely a means of double-checking the clarity in your poses, completely separate from the actual design, like so:

If anything, Star Butterfly's design is kind of fucked in that regard since her hair is so big there's very few ways to create a pose for her where it doesn't mess with a regular silhouette test, or characters like Steven Universe & Clarence hitting snag in their posing because their fat limbs and short bodies mean they aren't always flexible enough for certain types of poses and lose clarity as a result. But on Tumblr it's just an excuse to justify aping the potato head, bean mouth look ad nauseum.

So change the name of the website from Deviantart to Degenerateart to make it more accurate.

I wouldn't say that there's none, it's just it seems like at this point art sites only come in two flavors: professional portfolio hubs for people who already make a living on their work, and cesspools overrun by either egotistical and delusional teens/autists, Tumblrinas, creepy fetishists, or some combination of those categories that scare off anyone remotely talented or aspiring to be one of the professionals but aren't there yet.

But yeah, there's no real good in-between art sites unfortunately. The ones that crop up tend to eventually get overrun by the latter hacks when they see that it's where all the good people have jumped ship to, or if not that the sites end up needing to put in parameters that create an entry barrier threshold so high that a lot of the mid-tier-but-learning people don't make the cut.

The vast majority of "good" art on deviantart now comes from kids and teens who are either copying artists from tumblr, or are just reposting from tumblr. You still have your creepy feet pics and weird photomanips from blackpills and your precious little kids with their silly warrior cats scribbles but any time you see non-fetish artwork with an ounce of competence, especially if it has an appealing cartoony aesthetic with pretty colors, you're usually about to find pronouns in the bio and something about punching nazis.

There's also the trend where you create an OC based around the popular pride flags which is as two dimensional and insulting as you would imagine it to be.

DA has slowly been becoming another Tumblr lately, if you look hard enough you'll see some people unironically putting dnis/byfs and kin lists on their profile, it's still a fetish infected shithole but it's getting there

*sigh* i know what you mean there is this artist that can draw really well tbh giving off some lisa frank vibes but she has stamps of the nazi punching and fuck trump and trump supporters if it wasn't for that I wouldn't mind looking at her art a lot more but I just can't help looking through her art gallery and seeing that nazi/fuck trump shit

Conceptart.org
A shadow of it's former self. It used to be a really good place for people who wanted to learn how to draw. They'd chase off the low effort hacks by just being extremely critical towards any artwork posted. Sadly Jason Manley (the guy who ran the site) chased off everyone by doing a bunch of really scummy things. He doxxed anyone to pirated the instructional videos, he may or may not have embezzled money from various other projects as well. Someone else will need to give the full story but, in the end he drove a lot of people away from that site and there really has not been anything like it.
