Diseased #Comicsgate - The Culture Wars Hit The Funny Books!

Oh wow, so his entire argument boils down to "I'm barely familiar with the history of unions, the legal process of forming a union, and I barely understand how the comics industry works because I'm just a reader who can't Google anything, but I have this romanticized idea of unions forming because a bunch of disenfranchised underdogs defeating a cartoony evil corporate fat-cat so comic freenlancers should just band together, likely put their livelihood in jeopardy with nothing to fall back on, and start some sort of strike without any plan despite likely not being qualified to form a union considering the vast majority of creative jobs in comics are contract work. Also throw in a reference to white supremacy that's a complete non-sequitur in this discussion for good measure." Can't see this going wrong at all.

Sad thing is, overall comic creatives are treated rather shitty - some of Marvel's page rates are borderline sweatshop-tier, to the point that even the bigger names can't live off their paychecks or need to take multiple books, and going indie is even worse. But considering they're holding up Chelsea "Ask Me About My Tampons" Cain and Chuck Windingus as their martyrs, seems like the top priority in their demands are more geared towards "make saying mean things on Twitter illegal" and "make me being fired for being a dumb shit illegal" rather than pointing to the creators who were crewed over in their contracts much much worse than anyone working in the comics industry now.

Hell, in terms of unionizing, the current SJW hipsters are more akin to Scabs than they are the noble working class strikers. Marvel keeps hiring fuckheads like Wendig, Leth, Henderson, North, etc. because Marvel knows they can get away with flinging peanuts at them with little complaint since those people are really only interested in the opportunity to put "Writer/Artist at MARVEL" in their Twitter bio, while anyone worth their weight in salt takes one look at Marvel's page rates and gets the hell outta dodge.

Yeah, the publishers can be quite exploitative at times. These creators really should start some sort of movement to help better their lot. Maybe not necessarily a union, but some sort of loose association by which they can take the reins out of the hands of Marvel and other publishers and instead create, promote, and sell books with creator-owned characters using their own creativity and charisma. Perhaps they could leverage new concepts such as social media and crowdfunding, which didn't exist in the old publishers' heydays, to communicate with and sell directly to fans with no middleman. It would probably take a lot of work, but the upside could be huge. If only there already were some similar highly-successful campaign along those lines that they could join or emulate.

Faster! I wanna read up on me!
Hello. If you are Jason Yungbluth, please confirm it in some way. You can either make a Talk To Staff thread, or simply do something like tweet out "hi kf" and then delete it after we see it. I have to threadban you until verification though.

ETA:
@Death Ray has been verified. His email and IP also match.

ETA2: This is also a lesson on why we don't broadcast that we're making threads on cows before they're posted.

Effect of cancelling a book and rebooting at number one

Top Marvel books, whats interesting to me is that FF#2 dropped ~280,000 copies compared to #1. This goes to show the #1 problem and Marvels reliance on variant covers to ship books. If you don't recall FF#1 had something like 32 variant covers, remember those photos of FAT stacks?? Well here's some ratios that were required to get those variants https://frankiescomics.com/products/fantastic-four-1-ratios (seems reliable)
  • 1/25 Lupacchino
  • 1/50 Ross, 1/25 Lupacchino set (2 comics)
  • 1/100 RIBIC VIRGIN, 1/50 Ross, 1/25 Lupacchino (3 comics)
  • 1/200 Ross Virgin, 1/100 RIBIC VIRGIN, 1/50 Ross, 1/25 Lupacchino (4 comics)
  • 1/500 PEREZ REMASTERED, 1/200 Ross Virgin, 1/100 RIBIC VIRGIN, 1/50 Ross, 1/25 Lupacchino set (5 comics)
  • 1/1000 PEREZ BW, 1/500 PEREZ REMASTERED, 1/200 Ross Virgin, 1/100 RIBIC VIRGIN, 1/50 Ross, 1/25 Lupacchino and (6 comics)

Look how bottom heavy this chart is, if you had ~3 new sellers at 100,00 or more likely ~6 current mid tier books reach 100,00 copies sold, you could trash everything at 10,000 and under

Because this is Bleeding Cool, an SJW hive full of scum who hate veterans and consider anyone who ever served their country to be a literal Nazi?

I've been wondering about this for while, what's the deal with bleeding cool? I get SJW culture is a factor but they're so damned determined to keep putting their hand on the grill for Marvel-a company which would throw them under the bus at a moments notice. They're owned by Avatar press-a company who are nominally a rival to Marvel. The hate clicks can't be worth the long term damage to the brand and the cultivation of right wing competors such as bleeding fool can it?

Does Mark Waid have access to photo's of the staff having a coke fuelled orgy with minors and animals?

OP would really benefit on some updates, I mean EVS is still on "neutral".

The link is 404, and for some reason I'm unable to open archive.is/.fo or any alternative on firefox, dunno wtf is with that, I can open it on tor, still annoying.

The archive is on the wayback machine, several copies, last ones not working, but I do wonder why bentcorner.com would delete the article?
Yeah it really needs a lot of work and corrections. The article going to 404 activates my almonds too.

I'll try to sit down and update it piece-by-piece some time this month.

If I recall, a lot of Bleeding Cool's problems stem almost entirely from the fact that Rich Johnston is something of an ego-maniac who leaps at the chance to be the first to break/spread rumors for the sake of feeling important. Prior to the whole CG debacle he was known for spamming articles that cited "anonymous insiders" as sources for completely unfounded rumors that often turned out to be completely false - usually as a means of bolstering assumptions he already has about the industry. Hell, as people already pointed out, a lot of anti-CG people used to make fun of Bleeding Cool for that practice before Rich started cheerleading them.

Another thing that springs to mind is that Rich Johnston claims that he has a butt-load of evidence regarding a comics industry scandal that is, to quote Rich, "worse than Jimmy Savile." Considering Jimmy Savile's scandal involved him potentially raping up to 450 children, that's a pretty bold statement to make... and borderline criminal if it's true and Rich has just been sitting on this information for fucking years and has made no attempts to contact the appropriate authorities.

C. Edward Sellner has been having a slap fight with EVS over the last few days, I'll just drop twitter search archives of them @-ing each other. There are more but i cant be arsed going through and screen capping all of it, but I'll drop one that should sum everything up.

Is it just me or do the biggest shit talkers in anti-CG come off as either jealousy of CG’s success in crowdfunding or embarrassment that amateurs are actually getting the products out while pros take years to send theirs out?

Damn, Luke Cage season 2 was actually watchable. I don't feel bad for Iron Fists tho, both seasons sucked.
Netflix Knocks Out ‘Marvel’s Iron Fist’, No Season 3 For Martial Arts Series

EXCLUSIVE: Just over a month after its significantly improved second season launched on Netflix, the streaming service has delivered a knockout cancellation punch to Marvel’s Iron Fist

Related'The Conners' Review: 'Roseanne' Spinoff Lacks A Lot More Than Just Fired Star
“Marvel’s Iron Fist will not return for a third season on Netflix,” said the Disney-owned comic giant and the streamer in a joint statement to Deadline today. “Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is proud of the series and grateful for all of the hard work from our incredible cast, crew and showrunners,” Marvel and Netflix added. “We’re thankful to the fans who have watched these two seasons, and for the partnership we’ve shared on this series. While the series on Netflix has ended, the immortal Iron Fist will live on.”

This is the first small screen series termination from the comic giant by the Reed Hastings run Netflix and a hard blow for the Finn Jones and Jessica Henwick led show about the mystically empowered NYC-based marital arts hero and Defenders member. Cast members on the series that as most recently run by Raven Metzner were informed of the cancellation in the last few hours, I hear.

Of course, while out for the count at Netflix, the tale of billionaire Danny Rand and Colleen Wing may “live on,” to quote Friday’s statement, on other platforms. That “other” being the streaming service that Disney is expected to launch next year, which already has series on Marvel fan favorites Loki and the Scarlet Witch in the pipeline, with Tom Hiddleston and Elizabeth Olsen expect to reprise their big screen roles. I hear that while Marvel wanted Iron Fist to continue on Netflix, the parent company’s new rival to the streamer has put the idea of a resurrection in consideration as it fosters the likes of the already announced Jon Favreau produced Star Wars series too.

At present, a migration of the other three Marvel series that evolved out of the lucrative 2013 deal between Disney and Netflix is not in the cards. A third season of the Krysten Ritter led Jessica Jones was order in April and a third season of fellow Defender Luke Cage is expected to get the formal go-ahead any day now. The first Marvel series to appear on the streamer back in 2015, Daredevil‘s third season is about to launch on Netflix on October 19.

The expectation is the apparently widely watched and critically acclaimed tale of the Man Without Fear will be back for a fourth Charlie Cox led season. Daredevil spinoff The Punisher was given a second Jon Bernthal fronted season in late 2017, soon after Season 1 launched.

So, where ever Iron Fist does or doesn’t land, there’s still a lot of Marvel to come for a while on Netflix.
'Luke Cage' Canceled as Netflix Trims Its Marvel Roster Some More

Iron Fist, also after two seasons. Both shows were part of the original quintet of Marvel shows Netflix ordered in 2013. The first of the five to premiere, Daredevil, launched its third season on Friday.

"Unfortunately, Marvel's Luke Cage will not return for a third season," Netflix and Marvel said in a joint statement. "Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem's Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series."

A source tells The Hollywood Reporter the cancellation was due to creative differences and the inability to agree to terms for a third season of the show. Netflix doesn't release viewership figures for its content.

Cheo Hodari Coker created Luke Cage and served as its showrunner. Mike Colter played the title character.

With the cancellations of Luke Cage and Iron Fist, Netflix now has three Marvel shows on its roster: Daredevil, Jessica Jones — which was renewed for a third season in April — and The Punisher, which wasn't part of the original order but grew out of Jon Bernthal's guest appearances as Frank Castle in season two of Daredevil. Its second season is due in 2019.

The fifth Marvel series Netflix originally ordered was The Defenders, a team-up involving the lead characters from every show save The Punisher. It had a one-off, eight-episode run that debuted in August 2017.

Marvel's parent company, Disney, is preparing to launch its own direct-to-consumer streaming service and is planning to remove all Marvel feature films from Netflix to run on the in-house platform when it launches. Among the Marvel movies currently on Netflix are Black Panther, Thor: Ragnarok and Doctor Strange.

Daredevil, Jessica Jones and The Punisher, however, are set to remain on Netflix for the time being under terms of the original deal.

Deadline was the first to report the cancellation.
