Luna is living on borrowed time. She contributes absolutely nothing to society other than extra work for loss prevention at Target, income for her shrink and a fleshlight for her equally grimy boyfriend.

Regardless, the thing with Luna is that she's been doing her workbooks and "trying" for years now with no results. Her sad addict aesthetic betrays itself with how dumb it is. If you're so sad and anxious that you're still sad and anxious even while on heroin... why are you using the heroin? Stop the workbooks, stop the xanax, and just lay on the couch as the sad lump you were always meant to be and even heavy drug use can't drag you out of.

DBT works for BPD because it makes you super aware of how you react to things compared to how others react to them. That allows you to see irrational behavior, and by naming the behavior you can change it. Unfortunately, it requires a shitton of hard work and Luna seems allergic to that. If she was smart and actually wanted to get better, she'd half-ass a suicide attempt, get into a psych ward, then use their social workers to secure housing, therapy, medicaid, etc.

DBT works if the patient is willing to do the work, attend the entire program twice or more, does their homework, and applies and uses the skills each day. It's only as effective as the patient is willing, much like rehab. Luna dropped out of the first round of classes, and only half-assedly tries using the skills when she's out of heroin and xanax.

The skills won't ever work the way the drugs do, and they tell you that in the classes. Luna's expectations are that the skills should make all of her feelings disappear, or turn into wildly happy ones. This is an unrealistic expectation.

BPD is a spectrum like an other personality disorder. The skills classes are only helpful to those low enough on the spectrum to both understand that their insane behavior hurts everyone around them and themselves - and, care enough about that to try and change. Most BPD patients are so wrapped up in their own suffering and drama that they could give a shit about the damage left in their wake. If this is the case, DBT won't work, because they don't care enough to try.

I'll leave it to you to decide which kind of patient Luna is.

It’s very typically BPD to stay with someone even though they’re really not good for you. Once you’re attached to that person you defend them until your last breath even if it’s super detrimental. Unless she’s that kind of BPD girl that suffers from ’splitting’ but I don’t think she does.
