Another case where John shows his ignorance of basic realities, and the costs associated with them. We already have a sizeable and growing population of homeless, impoverished and unskilled people. It would be wiser to apply our available resources towards improving their lot if possible, before adding to their numbers and driving them into deeper and more entrenched impoverishment.
Instead, his incredibly smart "engineer" brain leaps to the easy and emotional idea that California embraced and has led to its current economic problems: "OMG it's racist if we don't let them in, we should let everyone in who wants to come, and everyone will have a piece of the pie!" In this theory, the pie is infinite and everyone gets a huge slice, despite this theory directly contradicting reality.
Honestly, tho, I doubt that John has given any in-depth thought to the problem at all, beyond "This is what humans are emotional about right now, and it sounds righteous, and it will get me attention if I say the same thing."
He also hasn't a clue about the biblical conception of charity. It is not something to be dictated or enacted by the government, but rather, a personal responsibility and duty. Without an element of self-sacrifice, it's not a Mitzvah, which is the foundation of Judeo-Christian charity. So, John, start first with some sacrifice on your own part towards the less fortunate. Until you do that, you have nothing of value at all to add to the subject.
