USC Medical is so much closer to him, accessible by bus or train, and their neurology team is second to none. But knowing how much pleasure he gets out of other people's misfortune, I don't think the world is ready for a smiling Russ.

Reading about Mobious, there are different levels of disability depending on how badly the nerves are damaged and if one or both 6th and 7th) are wrecked, but considering Russ’s speech, eyes, fingers, feet and likely intelligence, he has the worst form. Choking is a major problem but it seems mostly for kids, so I dunno...

I’m also willing to believe he didn’t get proper therapy. I’ve read about speech therapy for facial paralysis and there are new techniques that probably weren’t in play when Russ was young, and/or he didn’t get the best care.

From seeing him talk, he can at least move his jaw some. I would’ve assumed his tongue would not be affected, but hearing him speak, I don’t know that I’d assume he can. His eye lids are also affected so I guess there’s no reason why his tongue wouldn’t be. Since he only ever moves his eyes up and down slightly in his creepy videos and the rest of his face doesn’t change, his whole face must just be totally fucked.

Ya, we went over this a while back, and consensus was that since it was a birth defect, his 7th cranial nerve is not merely damaged so it could be repaired, it's missing completely. Therefore I don't think any amount of plastic surgery could help him right now. Not until they can generate new tissue to graft as nerve cells.

Yes, I saw him eat a few times. If memory serves me right. He can move his tongue but it’s limited use. He chews and then gets it slowly down his throat

He underwent an operation at age ten to do something similar (nerve transplant) but that either wasn't effective or only partially affected.

He also went through years of speech therapy and from what I have gathered received the best of medical and therapeutic care via his adoptive parents. Russ has certainly never stated otherwise.

Russ actually got off pretty lightly wrt to how he has been physically affected by his moebius syndrome. He has all four limbs, hands, feet and digits intact, albeit with some slight deformity to his fingers. Other moebius sufferers aren't so lucky.

His facial features also haven't been as badly affected as other moebius sufferers, but quite clearly he does have a level of disability and deformity that must have made life extremely difficult for him.

It doesn't appear to have affected him too badly mentally either. His IQ appears relatively high and I'm not convinced he can be classed as being on the autistic spectrum.

He does however exhibit clear symptoms of being affected by mental health issues such as NPD, BPD, etc. However I believe these are "learned", developmental disorders of thought resulting from childhood and adolescent experiences, rather than being related to any physical abnormality of the brain.

TLDR - Russ got off lightly wrt his moebius syndrome and he should be thankful to the sweet Mormon baby Jesus.

The appropriate connections for the 7th cranial nerve were not properly developed as a fetus in the case of Moebius, which is why that nerve never grew in the first place. As noted by @Zombiefaceddwarf above, that's also why the surgery he had done failed.

Without some radical new advancement in biotech, he's pretty much cursed with shitlipps for life.
