EDIT: I guess they have "dedicated teams" to take stuff down, but the results are asymmetric, at best. Not news, I suppose.

You started censoring a form of speech, period. For people who don't know, Gab started banning loli art (not even hentai in some cases). That takes them from being a free speech platform to a publisher.

Do I enjoy loli? NO! I think it is fucking sick. However, my rule of thumb is to support all speech before my speech ends up on the front-line and I'm left with nobody to defend me. Defend free speech in all forms or you will lose free speech in all forms.

The old BO was ImKampfy, a Turk, who would ban people for questioning Trump and he put in a bunch of word filters ("nigger" was filtered to "double redditor", "Weev" was filtered to "kike") he got removed from his position for being an enabler of raids. The board's new moderators will still ban you for anything that remotely goes against their worldview, though.

Banning gross shit like Japanese cartoon child porn is not a free speech issue. That's like saying banning videos of 3 guys 1 hammer or 1 guy 1 jar etc. is "free speech" violation.

Honestly though. Gab.ai and Mastodon are only making any sort of discussion on the internet only devolve into more screeching from either sides.

Both are effectively contained within their own safe spaces which the former have been raging against and will go to extreme conclusions about the either side's perspective.

Does pornographic imagery credibly fall under the purview of free speech? Don't get me wrong, I'm against banning any pornography that doesn't involve the abuse of actual people, but my understanding of free speech is that it applies specifically to the expression of ideas and opinions.

Not even all forms of speech fall under free speech. If I record a conversation in which a group of people are plotting an armed robbery or a terrorist attack, those people can't then fall back on the free speech defense when the police arrive and confront them over the recording.

No one actually supports free speech. Free speech is nothing more than a marketing gimmick designed to attract people like neo-nazis to freely express their views. Naturally these are also the same types of people who would gladly silence their enemies if given the chance. Anyone who thinks they support free speech will turncoat the moment they find it inconvenient. The ultimate fate of free speech is death.

And we can't solely blame the phenomenon of the swarm of rats landing there due to the ship they were on sinking. Torba acted like a doof, screaming MAGA at the same time he promoted the website. And he just posted about politics. So from the get-go it was all just MAGA people and he reinforced that, and Twitter, while progressive, is probably even more fueled by animals pictures and celebrity worship. The left is really good at hiding how they affiliate with their violent types and is even good at rehabilitating their image (see antifa), the MAGA crowd has too many ties to the alt right online that are visible ad exploitable.

Torba made gab political. He can't be faulted for doing his best to take something mainstream and at the same time try to be totally old-school internet free speech. Especially not when the left has weaponized corporations for their own end, especially the tech sector. But he is also dumb for not seeing this eventually coming on. He should have put the servers with an overseas host that doesn't give a shit about any of this crap.

Twitter is a business and their only objective is to make as much money for their shareholders as possible. Advertisers such as Pepsi don't want their ads on a timeline next to someone shouting about how we need to gas all kikes. It's as simple as that.

As for Gab dumping the loli crap, it was likely so they could keep their payment processor. And that wasn't a bullshit reason by Stripe. Adult content is considered high risk and hurts the rates they get. Even a "woke" company like Patreon had to dump a lot of their explicit content to comply. Stripe or any other payment processor isn't going to fuck up their banking relationships and rates over adult content.

All these are business decisions. Businesses are there to make money. If Gab, Twitter, Stripe, or whoever were non-profits, I would understand your disappointment.

I think the real issue is that humans are tribal by nature and the way social platforms work pretty much gurantees that people form groups and attack/ban everyone outside their circlejerk in 0.5 seconds. As these idiots can't actually genuinely kill each other like in the days of old it will just go on ad infinitum.

Only few people are actually able to just coexist with opinions and views they don't agree with in the same space, and even that is limited - especially when they come from complete strangers they have no respect for or affiliation with otherwise. Free speech on a social platform will never work without that platform ending up in the corner of some social/political/ideological spectrum of the group that "conquered" the social platform, officially or inofficially. tl;dr social platforms fucking suck and always will continue sucking. The only winning move is not to play.

I'm pretty sure Gab failed because it offered nothing more than being a partisan alternative to Twitter, not due to faltering in its speech principles by banning loli or other undesirable content. Consider it sad or fair, but most people aren't concerned about free speech until it gets taken away, and even fewer will want absolutely every topic and content to be treated equally.

If Gab really wanted to succeed they should have firebombed the Twitter office, nuked all their servers, and then sent ninja assassins after every single alternative be it Mastodon or Minds. Because if they are only capable of forking an existing project, no way can they innovate in features, and their position isn't appealing to majority, so they could only thrive when there are no other alternatives.

Not having a block button or a way to filter out certain posts was a bad move. You can have freedom of speech but I don't have to listen to it.

Something like Mastodon is the way forward with these kinds of services, and is really the only way to prevent censorship while still keeping the platform usable. By making it so that decisions are decentralized and only applied locally, you can fix these issues.
On the other hand I can see Mastodon potentially having scaling issues.

Dunno if anyone else has seen this but a Twitter account has come out publicly blackmailing Stripe to change their ToS after the shooting, as well as pressuring them to terminate Gabs service.

This account also claims to have been communicating with Stripe over the past year.

One of the DMs released mentions "two more big hits this october", i wonder if this has to do with a certain payment processor and web hosting service.
