I liken this kind of thing to getting mad about unplugging the refrigerator as a prank. Not a big deal in a short-term, one-off way, but, fuck man, why can't we just leave the fridge plugged in? It's kind of a thing.

This is a very poor analogy.

A refrigerator does not apply to games journalism in any way, nor does any act of "unplugging" apply here.

No but in all seriousness, this GamerGate thing autistic as hell no matter what side you are on. It's a lose-lose situation. It's also not the slightest bit funny so I have no idea what it is doing in the Lolcow board. Should be in a hobby board or Deep Thoughts, because it's too deep for me. All it does is bring out people's inner Lolcows.

Which is why I'm tired of listening to the bitching and I'm just gonna keep going. But the whole "you dont need games" thing... I'm not saying you do, I'm saying wouldn't you be pissed if someone fucked with your hobby? No matter how innocuous or frivolous it is.

Can we please stop fighting about this?

I am getting tired of people saying "hey guys, Gamergate is really stupid. Stop talking about it" I don't post in the Jace forums and tell everyone "hey guys, this guy is really not worth talking about"

You're on a forum devoted to autism, deal with it. Let's focus back on the subject of the thread please.

I say we agree to disagree.

Games can be pretty fun but when a hobby becomes a lifestyle or a religion to people, no good will come of it. There's so much hatred in this debate and it's getting ridiculous. There will be people who disagree with you, who will say it is all silly. That's okay. I get that people are passionate about their hobbies but it doesn't have to be some sort of Holy War.

I'm going to address a lot of things that have been said in chat and a lot of misconceptions that have been going around.

Gamergate is a response to a mass amount of SJW presence on the internet related to video games. Ethics in games journalism is the focus of it but you also have to realize why it's going on.

SJW's for months have been attempting to push an agenda constantly in video games. A recent Assassins Creed game was labelled as "misogynistic" because they lacked a playable female multiplayer character. Grand Theft Auto 5 was labelled as sexist because it didn't feature a female protagonist. Journalists stated the game enabled actual rape because people could pose their avatars in such a way that it looked like they were having intercourse. Numerous games are being labelled in this way and Anita Sarkeesian's recent videos have only added fuel to the fire.

Gamergate individuals have attempted to police themselves as a response to things such as death threats and harassment, and have only used a single tool to promote their message. Freedom of speach. All that has been going on is just an emailing of advertisers, and people just want to discuss the issue. And the response is websites like Reddit and 4chan have attempted to mass censor even discussing the subject. Anti Gamergate individuals have gone on record saying "if you talk about this, you will get fired" and people who dare talk about it get compared to ISIS.

You can disagree that it's worth talking about or that it's an issue entirely but insulting people who want to talk about it and creating ad hominem attacks like "This isn't worth talking about because it's just about video games and you're autistic if you care about this" leads absolutely nowhere and only promotes hostility. This is an internet forum related to cataloging absolutely everything about a guy in his early 30s who shits himself. Nobody has an issue when Jace pisses himself in a stream and everyone talks endlessly about it.

And yes I know "guys we should all just talk about video games". Nothing would give me more pleasure than to talk about video games. But the fact of the matter is if you don't talk about this, these people get their way. They're a very loud minority and unfortunately they have already made a lot of traction. Tim Schafer stated people should watch Anita Sarkeesian's videos, the same person who got hired as a consultant on Mirror's Edge 2. I'm not saying anyone should or should not do anything, just please avoid insulting people who choose to discuss it. We're all friends here, let's try to stay that way.

The tagline of the forums is "no shit is too minor". I'm glad the thread was moved out of lolcow, now lets continue talking about the subject at hand.

^ Not just that, but we want reviewers to disclose if they have had any relationships with the devs of the game, or been paid off. Or not taken bribes or have relationships with the devs. Nathan Grayson never disclosed his relationship with Zoe when he promoted her game (numerous times I believe), and Patricia Hernandez has on more than one occasion promoted a friend/roomate/lover's game without disclosing their relationship.

That needs to stop too.
