I think he’s saying that Goblin Slayer and Dakaichi look restrained when compared to SAO, not that SAO is restrained.

Though on a similar note, it’s always been kinda weird to me that one of the big criticisms of Goblin Slayer is that was framed “identical to a hentai.” The only shot I can think of that vaguely fits that comparison is one vertical pan, though it’s meant to be a main character’s point of view and doesn’t linger longer than it has to. Everything else is either close-ups of the character’s face or a single extreme close-up that isn’t framed as titilating at all. The only way someone might mistake it for a hentai is if you were deliberately sexualizing it as a viewer.

Lauding those criticisms against SAO I could understand since it does legitimately have shots and compositions that you could splice right into anime porn and no one would notice, but it kinda seems like “hentai” is just thrown around as a umbrella buzzword for “it had unsavory sexual elements that I didn’t care for.”

Thing is, this is very clearly an attempt at fanservice similar to the infamous Asuna tentacle rape scene. There was no issue showing a bit of the prelude where the girl is tied up and about to be molested as the audience would be able to get what's about to happen, yet we get a bunch of shots attempting to please rape fetishists. Meanwhile the "rape scene" from Goblin slayer was lambasted for being too extreme. The thing about the Goblin Slayer rape scene is that is wasn't intended for fanservice, nothing was exactly shown. It was intended to distress you and realize why the goblins should be slain. I'm pointing this out because Geoff doesn't know what the fuck he's even talking about. Even if you could argue that the SAO rape scene was tame in the sense that it wouldn't distress you as much as the Goblin Slayer rape scene, it still downplays and even sexualizes rape. As for Dakaichi, I can't say much as I haven't watched the anime.

Honestly I'm kind of excited a creator I like tearing apart a creator I don't hate or like particularly. He's going to be more blunt than Uniquenameosaurus and just tell him his girlfriend is a whore. Geoff is so condescending and he takes the moral high-ground and assumes things about EsemicolonR like him being a real Nazi and him trying to humanize the Nazis when all he did was say something about the Jews and play 4 minutes of an uninterrupted Hitler speech, which is honestly pretty funny.
