John always gave me the vibe of somebody who could actually hurt somebody else if the stars aligned correctly. Not even out of a bigger malicious plan mind you, just because he was that nuts. (Which is btw. all about personality and not even about schizophrenia in itself, Terry was quite nuts and he never gave me that vibe for example) I'm pretty sure he gave the specialists working with him the same vibe so if they're not forced by outside forces I'm sure he'll be gone for a long time. Then again the US mental health system looks like a total mess so who knows.
Also I'm pretty sure they'll wipe his brain clean with old-school neuroleptics, he will not get any of that fancy atypical stuff, mostly because he's probably easier to deal with that way and they are a lot cheaper. (see above re: mess) These medications are suspected to cause lasting damage, schizophrenia is degenerative and he's quite old so being in a facility is probably the best you could do for him to make him stay alive. What kind of life that is is a question for another day.
John HAS actually hurt somebody. He raped a child(sexually). The scary thing is I am not convinced that he will be institutionalized for good. My instincts are scream8ng 6 - 18 months he will be wandering the streets again(sexually) wearing naught but his necklace of knives. Because once they pump him full of meds he gets just rational enough that somebody thinks “outpatient management” is a good idea. At which point John gets placed in a group home (sexually) kicked out of said group home almost immediately (sexually) and starts living (sexually)under the closest highway bridge to his old neighborhood, while wandering it pantless and making his old neighbors and the new tenants in his old place’s lives a scary living hell.
