Brazil and remarks on race should be taken with a pound of salt, this is something you could write a thesis on, I am willing to bet someone has. If you go out and poll, people that anyone else would consider black, in Brazil will identify as white and vice versa. Someone I traveled with was considered black in USA, white in Brazil, a local in Italy, and in North-Europe some kind of mudblood, it is all about perspective. Bolsonaro ripping on blacks is more about raving about the lazy poor people and is a bigger deal outside of Brazil than inside it, no German or Canadian would ever be elected if they said something like it.

As far as the poor voting for the other side because theirs has not made life better, that is not new to Brazil. It is very possible that is what happened. I would.

Getting more philosophical with international politics, I do believe that politics and national interests are all alike nation to nation. The problem is that most outsiders do not understand the govt and election style of Brazil and normally that is perfectly fine. What is problematic is when they make rash assumptions without admitting arrogance. Brexit was all about Britain obtaining sovereignty, yet I remembered in 2016 when Americans and Canadians were claiming the entire thing was racial. People didn't realize how authoritarian the EU could be until after the copyright law was passed.

Posted this on the sargon thread but i think is relevant here too.

Lurked here for some time decided to make an account since the topic of bolsonaro came up, i guess i should give some context as to why people here voted for him.

As much as chemo boxxy and sargon are making it seen as if he got elected on taking down cultural marxsim it just shows how much in their own bubble they are that they think everything on the world is based on this one topic (dont get me wrong, part of it is to fight that sure, but thats is not the reason he won)
His campaing focused on 3 things:
1- fight corruption, after the start of operation "lava jato" which uncovered billions of dollars worth of bribes the the public opinion of the government went down more that ever,it was already low because of ex-president dilma's impeachment and ex-president lula being arrested for corruption.
2- fix the economy, after 16 year of PT(workers party\full on socialists) rulings the economy was fucked.
3-decrease the sky high murder rates, he has promised to soften gun laws and increase the police force to better deal with the rampant crime.
Of course if you ask sargon he will just default to "bolsonaro got elected to own sjws epic style" because he has no knowledge on what he is talking about.

Also to elaborate a little:
Bolsonaro has a long history of making homofobic and racist comments, he has tried to distance himself from them recently and has also (kind of) apologiesed for some of them. If he was being honest is another question, but i dont think he will start dropping fags from helicopters anytime soon.

Maybe a bit offtopic but they miscalculated hard when they tried to use lula's (ex-president, in jail for corruption) name to boost their votes,
in the start of his campaing Haddad (main opposition to bolsonaro) used the color red from the workers party and mention ex-president lula constantly, but when he realized people weren't buying it he changed all his campaing ads to distance himself from lula and started copying bolsonaro

He just disassociated himself from the party to try to win, but he would 100% go back to normal had he won.
Haddad was just as much of a slimy fuck as everyone else on the workers party,
No matter who it was against him Haddad would have lost, people wanted something new, a fresh start away from the socialists who ran the country for 16 years.
