There are few worse uses of money than long-term storage. You can buy nice new stuff for what you end up sinking into the old shit while it just sits, collects dust, and attracts rodents. It really is sad that Barb is so mentally off that she can't let garbage go.

One must wonder how any work can be done on the house with all that Barbage inside. Maybe the price of the storage is to cover all the crap that had to be moved out of the house just to make space to work on the structure.

It can't be. 1600USD is what I pay for the rental of a 2 bedroom apartment in the world's most expensive city. There is no way a storage unit in Ruckersville VA costs so much. Either Chris is exaggerating again or Barb has actually leased a second home to use as a garbage fortress.

I'm of a mind to agree that Chris is misinterpreting something Barb told him regarding their finances, lumping in a number of unrelated expenses. It's not impossible that they've got $1600 worth of storage space, but unless they saved every. Single. Thing. From the hoard and stored it away, I don't see how they could hit the $1600 mark.

No, I'm done. The number was still active though when he sent this. I'm not sure if I should just leave it open for a little while longer (not respond, just let Chris send texts if he wants to).

Well, Chris could always sell his sperm or something.... Oh wait, nevermind.

Are you going to give him some cock and bull story about why you aren't talking to him in anymore? I suppose the humane thing to do would be to exit gracefully. But then again, I suppose history has shown that Chris doesn't care that much?

At first I was surprised that Chris would have the gumption to ask Renee for the use of her house, but then I remembered he'd also nonchalantly asked for use of her womb. . .

A few years ago, my then-girlfriend & I asked my mom if we could store some of our (read: her) stuff in her unused garage while we moved from one apartment to another. It was only for a week, so it wasn't a huge inconvenience to her, but my ex had so much weird shit that we had to rearrange half the garage to get it to fit. That in itself took several hours. Then there was getting it all into the U-Haul. . .
My mom didn't help us clean or load or unload or anything, which was fine---why would she? She was already letting us use her space for free---but something tells me if "Renee" were to be gracious enough to allow her house to be filled with Barbage, she would be moving all of it. I don't even know how Chris would get all that shit on a U-Haul in the first place, even with all that "elbow-greased strength."

What I think people aren't saying here is this could be the end of the Hoard. Like, it's gone.

Suppose the $1600 isn't raised. Even with Chris' Entrepreneurial spin as of late, he's only netted $2,000, and this is a less worthy cause.
They don't have the money; they had been told far in advance that they'd need it, and they were Okay with "Insurance Pays for it", but now that's come due. We are at 10 months after the fire, and I think this has been plenty of time for decent repairs to be done.

The game of owing or guilt tripping is going to be done.
Financial transactions with the words "pay later" run into "Credit History" which would find the aforementioned Credit Card Debts and obligations.

Just like that, it's gone. The bill isn't paid, the hoard is sold--perhaps at auction, perhaps to Mr. Clyde Cash. As a Christological Source, the Hoard is probably worth a couple hundred $$$ even if its water damaged and in poor shape, and Clyde Cash has cash.

But even if its just thrown away, it is the end of an era. Barb probably won't be running to Goodwill anymore to buy useless crap--Chris does things like get medicine. It would take real initiative and sacrifices to regain the hoard--but people who would do those things wouldn't have endangered it with extension cords.

Finally, the first good thing to have happened to Chris for years--is because he is literally unable to afford the wrong choice. He will actually have space and things might not stink as much as they have.

I always did wonder how they moved all that shit into the rental in the first place. Did insurance pay for movers? Or did Chris move shit with the help of somebody with the van or something? Whatever the point one of my niggaling questions is how they're going to move from the rental house. It's gonna be a major stress on 'ol Chrissy. Moving is stressful for everybody but his case is doubly so with a hoarded rental, a burnt out 14 BLC and a mother who is, shall we say, particular about her things. And he thinks a five hour power nap is a problem. It's going to get worse.

I'm trying to figure out what you could possibly gain from a lie so blatant and I'm struggling. The cost of a two-bedroom apartment in London, per month, is close to eight grand. Hell, there are plenty of cities in the US where you can't even get a studio apartment for less than $2k.

You could, technically, get a 2 bedroom apartment in London for $1600 a month. Some friends of mine in Catford are paying around that. Their place is nice too, it's just a terrible location and a kinda rough area if you aren't used to it. $8000 is the top, top end of the market for a 2 bed place. We're talking super luxury, middle of town.

Anyway, on topic, this situation is fucking ridiculous. If you have more shit than you can fit in your house, then you have too much stuff.

I wonder how Chris would have dealt with this hoarding shit if he was neurotypical and not an idiot.

How long is it going to be until Barb and Chris have to build a fort out of their Barbage to brave the harsh Virginian winters? Given their fiscal situation, I'm inclined to say that such a thing is at hand.

Chris should build their own storage unit out of his LEGO in the backyard of 14BC. It seems like the logical thing to do, right?

Also @Thetan For the love of GodBearJesus, just let Chris and Barb move in and let Chris knock you up already. You're selfish for not completing his dreams. "DIRECT DEPOSIT" FOR HIS SEED ONLY! NO HAGGLE!

I think it's pretty likely there were movers and that insurance funds were allocated towards that service. The operative concept being that those monies would very likely come out of what their total recovery would otherwise have been. The only situation where I could see moving their stuff into storage being an extra "bonus" is where it's done to prevent further loss (i.e., where the property has value that would be further damaged by not moving it into storage). Even the cost of the rental house is going to come out of their final recovery.

Much to the contrary of their commercials, State Farm is not a service that does everything in its power to restore your life to how it was before your loss. Like any other casualty insurance, its responsibility is going to be limited to making the Chandlers financially whole. And while some policies provide differential recovery if you replace lost property (as opposed to simply taking the value of it in dollars), you're still limited to being made as whole as you paid for.

There may be additional allowances for things like temporary housing, but the operative word there is going to be temporary—it's possible that the policy specifically excludes paying for the rental house for a twelfth month. And it would not surprise me if they had hit their coverage limit on the reconstruction of 14BLC plus whatever they've eaten through so far. So, as I suggested above, I really suspect the $1600 refers to the combination of another month's rent, utilities, and storage.

The "renovations" at 14 BLC are going to be of the absolute cheapest caliber--there will be no mold removal, and just enough to pass code. Insulation will be non-existent, paint will try to cover up mold (spoiler: won't work).

To those worried about Charb dying from black mold, there's only one toxic type of black mold and more benign varieties. That's not to say there isn't that or other toxic molds in Rebuilt 14BLC though.

Rocky. The answer is always Rocky.
