Diseased TV Tropes community

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
That's a legacy that goes all the way back to Fast "Gus Raley" Eddie. Man hated ED, the chans, or anywhere that would mock him and his website and any vector that could possibly encourage people to look at those sites he locked down, and if he had to mention them because he couldn't come up with an excuse why they shouldn't exist on his site at all, they were unlinked to the source locked articles only.

One of the things we decided when forming All The Tropes is that we weren't thin skinned assholes who could take the internet taking a shit on us, it was bound to happen from somewhere anyway, why pretend it doesn't exist, and shit, we are a public facing entity, criticism is natural and to be expected.

Then again, man hated the very concept of transparency and considered the idea he might be beholden to his own community to any degree beneath him.
So do you have any info as to why Wikipedia is known as "the other wiki" on there?

Because outside of Wikipedia's internal politics, their article on TVT is more of an random footnote instead of something critical or "mean-spirited."

Because they think of themselves of the second largest wiki on the internet. Seriously.

It's a little meme of theirs to contrast themselves with Wikipedia, which is much more formal in structure, requires extensive citations, and is "less fun".

The context is not meant to be hateful, it's more a neutral if bit tired internal meme.

So he was a huge lolcow basically.

What is he doing now, I wonder? Now he is no longer king of a little fiefdom, just some loser wasting away in obscurity.

From what I can tell, he dropped out of sight after palming off TV Tropes on Drew Schoentrup, who, unlike Eddie, is a fairly reasonable, relatively hands off guy who just lets the people who are veterans there run the place while he stay in the background and pumps money into hiring coders and generally pays the server bills.

As opposed to Eddie, he's not pissed at the idea people might criticize him, he met with ATT co-founder Brent Laabs and they had a civil meeting, as Brent described it to me, and it was thanks to him some of Eddie's final attempts to fuck over usage of TV Tropes content anywhere else was scaled back (they still keep the NC clause, but Drew had enough brains to realize Eddie trying to demand that anyone had to ask TVT staff for any other usage of their own contributions elsewhere was legal bullshit and rescinded it), and overall, I have no real reason to have misgivings about him.

Like Eddie, he too considers the place a money maker, hence the ads remain in place, but to his credit, he pumped quite a bit of his own capital first into shoring up the rickety crap Eddie had put into the outdated PmWiki codebase, and that seems to have made the site far more stable and secure, so props for being wise enough to hire actual competent coders instead Eddie doing everything (for good or mostly ill IMO).

I asked this before, but I seriously want to know why a 40+ year old man acted like a fucking teenager

It's honestly unknown. Even Bob Schroeck, one of the ORIGINAL (2004 era) members of TV Tropes, he never really understood why Eddie became an asshat.

He was a spergy, laid back Buffy The Vampire Slayer fanboy when Bob first encountered him, but otherwise not too terrible, but over the years he became a bitter jackass who treated the success of TV Tropes like an entitlement and became obsessed with stamping out any criticism of himself.

As further irony, the FETISH FUEL section of TV Tropes was his brainchild, one he wound up cursing and pretending never happened after that exploded like a shit filled balloon.

  • Plebcomics was a fairly well-known Tumblr personality and webcomic artist back in the early-to-mid '10s whose sequential output could be summed up as "reactionary bile aimed at anyone whose views on gender, orientation, race, etc. don't match the author's own". Even back in the days when any notions of social justice tended to be met with hostility, people criticized her comics for their dubiously-informed views of and condescending attitudes towards progressives (and kids who explored their gender identities in non-standard ways). Things eventually came to a head when someone set up a blog exposing Plebcomics's racism and tendency to sic her followers on vulnerable teenagers; in response, Plebcomics inexplicably gave out personal info related to her place of work, perhaps hoping to get one over on her detractors if they tried to call her boss only to be told off. Well, they called her boss...and Plebcomics swiftly found herself out of a job due to her views and actions. Plebcomics distastefully compared the experience to being raped and hasn't done anything of note since; her comics are now derided for their copious amounts of straw and serve as the go-to example of awful "anti-SJ" mindsets.

Can't wait for the Kiwi Farms entry, like that would ever happen.

There is such thing as notability. Some of the best books in the world are well known, but are drowned out by Channel Awesome crap.
