I could see that being a Tumblr comic to be honest. At first sight they knew each other were gay and that being the defining thing about their characters caused them to bond and fall in love with each other. There would also be a shoehorned in definition of a sexual desire to love to justify a hetero relationship while still being gay.

If there's one thing I've learned...

there always is. Never underestimate the lengths people will go to show how #woke they are. Just lower your expectations.

Steven Universe hit that "right" niche. Safe enough so the networks could let it play as a harmless children's cartoon, but also somehow "mature" (I say this loosely) enough to attract a huge teenage fanbase. After shows like Adventure Time came out, we got a resurgence of shows trying to emulate the style, but not understand why people liked it. Rebecca Sugar, already working on Adventure Time, had some credit already so some other Adventure Time fans as well as new fans who didn't grow up with AT went right over.

I think a lot of the shows attention went towards the art style and how "different" it was to say the least. The way how the characters are drawn, the lips/bodies, and the overall aesthetic. Now to be fair, I don't think the show looks bad. Some of the environments look nice, some of the characters while looking really unappealing, still have solid designs and color palettes and the music can be decent at some points.

But you have to remember, this show also has moments of incompetence that gets adapted to "SJW" art. Characters are off model in almost every single episode and the show has an air of moral righteousness that aligns perfectly with these people. Instead of inspiring questions that don't necessarily have easy answers, the show plays everything super safe. Because we all know if the show really wanted to dig into morality in a kid show (like Avatar) they would have to bring up uncomfortable questions, which the show narrowly avoids.

The main characters meet dictators/other soldiers of those dictators? All resolved promptly with black and white morality. Want to spend time on the world and action? Just have the characters meander and talk about the same issue over and over again while dismissing the bigger plot. It's not even a slow burn, it's a never ending spark you're trying to start with a bunch of wet logs to start a fire. Any new big plot revelation doesn't matter because in the next episode it's dropped with filler.

Why am I writing this? To prove a point. The show is so safe that it hurts. Even the more graphic things aren't that graphic in the long term. You'll never see an episode like "Perfect" from Courage the Cowardly Dog or even some cruder magical elements it's supposedly based on. Even Adventure Time wasn't afraid to experiment with it's style, lore or humor. But SU is so safe that anyone can get into it and Tumblrinas can have an excuse of calling the show "progressive" and "deep" when it really isn't.

tl;dr Steven Universe is a culmination of a safe show that these people want and it caters to them with mixed results.

Eh I'll have to disagree on this one being here. The trans headcanon is omnipresent, and barely noteworthy, especially for Saihara since he gets the treatment a lot.
This is pretty good art, the outfits aren't hideous, and the characters are still fully recognizable. Compared to most of the shit in here, inoffensive.

If you really wanna post bad DR redesign art, you'll have to dig a bit deeper than that.
