The Marquis De Sade is still reigning champion of this domain. The fat bisexual deviant spoke of the truth of this world (that's still relevant to this day) with biting satire that's still unmatched.

The most crucial book by Sade is not in fact The 120 Days of Sodom. It should be checked out no question but I feel that his Philosophy in the Bedroom is the definitive rumination on his philosophy. Justine or the Misfortunes of Virtue is maybe his 2nd best book but the 120 Days of Sodom is no slouch when it comes to shock value.

I'd also recommend Panzram: a Journal of Murder that I finished a month or so ago.

It's the diary of serial killer Carl Panzram interspersed with an editorial clarifying the history of the U.S. and the prison system at the time. The authors of the editorial make the point that it was really the prison system that was at fault that created Panzram.

I haven't read this so I can't recommend it.

Cant ever go wrong with a classic. I'm sure most everybody has read Lolita but reading Humbert recount his attraction to an explicitly stinky 12 year old got infamous for a reason.

There's also Guillaume Apollinaire's The 11,000 Rods (get it?) which was early Surrealist erotica taking place during the Russo-Japanese war. Apollinaire is renowned for his poetry in France but his fiction has been neglected. The text recounts a group of libertines who partake in orgies, coprophagia, pedophilia, and orgies on the battlefield.

As an aside, I think Apollinaire's poetry is banal and forgettable. Apollinaire wrote one other erotic text Memoires of a Young Don Juan which is about a rich boy discovering his sexuality and fucking all the members of his family.

Then you have Georges Battaile's immortal The Story of the Eye. It isn't his best book but it's short and worth a look I think:

A short story, "I Have no Mouth, and I Must Scream" by Harlan Ellison has a pretty dark and grueling style of atmosphere and writing. A post-apocalyptic world during the Cold War, a supercomputer becomes sentient and tortures five individuals. Ellison is pretty detailed with his story if anyone is interested in reading it.

Read Lolita and then cry because your prose won't ever be as good as Nabokov's.

American Psycho for a more violence based experience, really good too.

Dunno if counts as fucked up, but "The Last Man" by Mary Shelley is emotionally fucked up as you see every fucking one dying from a virus and well, the title is the spoiler.

The Road and Blood Meridian by McCarthy for some more feels fuckery. Be warned though, if you want a very personal experience you might don't get it depending on how you read those books.

The 25th Hour by Vhirgil Gheorghiu for nazi fuckery. Since you only follow consistently one character and the author have plenty of experience on the matter, it builds up to some heavy shit.

Literally anything written by Svetlana Alexijevich. She won a nobel for a reason.

Also I think everyone read "All Quiet on the Western Front" and "The Middle Parts of Fortune", both fucked up war books too.

Maldoror by Lautreamont is another big motherfucker when it comes to fucked up disturbing material. Huge inspiration for the surrealists including Antonin Artaud and Salvador Dali.

It's a surrealist text that's constantly shifting perspective but is largely from the perspective of a being named Maldoror who may or may not be a fallen angel, a shapeshifter, or an insane man. The chapters are separated by lines and each new piece is from different perspectives such as a hair that fell off from a young prostitute that was skinned alive. Another piece has our main character witness a ship wreck and then dive into the ocean to fuck a female shark. Still very powerful stuff to this day especially considering it was written in 1868.

Lolita by Nabokov is №1 book that freaks me out, like, there are no gore or anythyng like that but it's disgusting.

i was actually freaked out by main hero plan. He knew he wont have a boner on lolita when she get older, do he wanted to impregnate her and have a fun time with a grand daughter.

As for gorey stuff, Cows by Matthew Stokoe is neat but sometimes you'll want to vomit while reading.
Blood Electric by Kenji Siratori, it's an interesting literature experiment(?), basically it's a system code of the machine that makes androids from corpses. Hard to read.

I saw Palahniuk read the story and at the most gut-wrenching part (if you will) a girl fainted. Supposedly this happened at most of the readings.

I got two I can think of off the top of my head.

Brotherhood of Heroes by Bill Sloan

Which deals with the Marines fighting at Peleliu. It goes through their experience, of what many in the 1st Marine Division said was the worst fighting for them of the war. Just describing a fucking atoll of coral, rotting crab and bodies, no where to dig in for shelter from the sun/attack. No sleep, no water, no food for weeks, and ending up wearing literal shit stained pants that became hard as a rock from the sweat and diarrhea. On top of fighting the Japanese. It shows how fatalistic and nuts the men became as the battle went on. All for a battle that was largly rendered moot and pointless.

Sniper on the Eastern Front: The Memoirs of Sepp Allerberger, Knight’s Cross

This is an auto biography about the German sniper with the 2nd highest kill count of the war and his entire time on the Ostfront. If you know anything about ww2 or the Ostfront then it should be self explanatory how fucked this memoir gets.

Everything Chuck Palahniuk writes is weird, gross and beautifully written. I really liked Snuff. It's a sort of mystery novel that takes place in the waiting room of a 600 man gang bang. At the beginning all you know is that an aging porn star is trying to break the world record for the most men fucked in a row and that someone will die, but you don't know how or why. Turns out not everyone is there just to bang.

It's good shit.
