I am getting a lot of positive feedback for this thread being up. A lot of people can’t seem to find a discussion for this topic that is grounded in reasonable emotions, and that is frustrating for them. They have the entire World Wide Web at their fingertips, but can’t find a forum that seems grounded in reality.

That’s why I’m very happy to help make this an informative, funny and thoughtful topic. Please let me know if I can improve the OP by the way.

Update: Here is an introduction of all this from the perspective of one of the students who was there.
Hello Local 12 News. At the present time, I have an urgent request that truly is of the utmost importance, a request that supersedes my entire being and applies to the integrity of all Americans. You have probably seen or heard of the video of students wearing MAGA gear supposedly "harassing," "bothering," and "jeering at" a Native American veteran. This is not true and taken entirely out of context. I am a student at Covington Catholic and was present at the occurrence. Here is what truly happened:

Every year, my school attends the March for Life in DC and afterward tours the city. Our chaperones and teachers told us to be at the Lincoln Memorial at 5:30 to be ready for the buses to pick us up. 5:30 came around and we were all gathered at the Memorial. As we are an all-male school that loves to get hyped up (hence our cheer section's name, "Colonel Crazies"), and as we have done for years prior, we decided to do some cheers to pass time. In the midst of our cheers, we were approached by a group of adults led by Nathan Phillips, with Phillips beating his drum. They forced their way into the center of our group.

We initially thought this was a cultural display since he was beating along to our cheers, and so we clapped to the beat. He came to stand in front of one of my classmates who stood where he was, smiling and enjoying the experience. However, after multiple minutes of Mr. Phillips beating his drum directly in the face of my friend (mere centimeters from his nose), we became confused and started wondering what was happening. It was not until later that we discovered they would incriminate us as a publicity stunt. As a result, my friend faces expulsion for simply standing still and our entire school is being disparaged for a crime we did not commit. To reiterate, we did not partake in any physical or verbal abuse, did not chant "build the wall" or mock or anything of the like, and did not seek to incite violence.

After that initial occurrence, we were then verbally assaulted by four or five African-American men who called us "faggots" and berated one of our African-American students for being friends with us. The truth needs to come out. I pray that you read this and can speak for us who are silenced by the media. Here is video evidence of Nathan Phillips approaching the group of Covington Catholic students, showing that we did not approach him but he approached us(https://twitter.com/i/status/1086681831804674048); the later half of the occurrence showing Phillips' group inciting debates as well as harassment of the students by another group; and a second video of the harassment of students (https://twitter.com/i/status/1086796421226029056).

As you can see by these videos, the true story is quite different from that portrayed by the media. A great injustice has been done, and it is our duty to see that the truth prevails. Additionally, Mr. Phillips has a history of claiming racial harassment. I am by no means disparaging his credibility, but this should be taken note of.

"WASHINGTON, DC (WKYT) - A video that has been widely shared on social media has sparked outrage against a Northern Kentucky High School.

According to FOX 19, the video shows a student standing and smirking directly in front of a Native American as he drums and sings, while a larger group of students, some wearing clothing that appears to bear the insignia of Covington Catholic High School, surrounds the man, jeering and chanting.

Social media posts from people at the scene say the Native American man was participating in the Indigenous Peoples March.

Posts on Covington Catholic’s Instagram page shows students from the school were in Washington, DC at the time, participating in the March for Life. The school’s social media platforms have since been restricted.

Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes voiced her disapproval of the behavior in a tweet reading, “As we prepare to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., his work to ensure equality for all through nonviolent civil disobedience sadly still applies today. Kentucky, we are better than this.”

She has also released a statement calling on Covington Catholic High School to denounce the incident.

Covington Catholic has not issued a statement at this time."

Update:
They have barely lost any steam. Still trying to doxxxxx a bunch of high school kids, Lionizing Mr. Phillips, and another reference to deep-south Dixie days.

Not pictured, but if you guys use social media to bring up any counter-narrative about Phillips’ actions toward the kids, or the overreaction toward the kids in general, I’d be very careful. They are out for blood.

The principal, the teachers, the main few spotlighted boys smirking, they have all been named and targeted. The situation is approaching nuclear.

Wait, just hours earlier he said he would NOT want to meet with them
Chief changes his mind a lot

While he has hoax hated before, it's just been local news that will have been forgotten as soon as it ended.

He created a different animal with this lie and it's not really his fault that it has blown up like it has. His bullshit story should have never been covered by the media because there was nothing there. But it was another story to hammer Trump with and the media are hopelessly addicted to their Trump hate.

I do feel a bit of hatred for the lying fool. But we should also appreciate that he managed to drop the MSMs reputation from the gutter down to the sewer.

The media were "pounced" upon, keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

That whole "things happened, we said some very specific things, they were proven completely wrong, everything is still unclear though somehow" framing reminds me of:

This is a story where memory and historical certitude clash. Where the doubt of a campaign strategist slams up against a university archive. Where the word of a proud photographer conflicts with the pride of an ex-wife and friends. Where the civil rights activism of Bernie Sanders and Bruce Rappaport collide.

NO YOU JUST GOT IT HORRIBLY AND OBVIOUSLY WRONG BECAUSE YOUR POLITICAL AGENDA IS GETTING MORE FOCUS THAN THE TRUTH AND FACTS YOU ASSHOLES.

I belive my media more than I do American media these days... that’s amazing.

I’m glad we have representatives of Congress weighing in now to report lies and that they’re upset some kids parents hires a PR firm so their life doesn’t get ruined before it starts. It’s great they’re still egging this situation on in the hopes someone does actually harm those kids.

Rep Ilhan Omar who famously said “Israel has hypnotized the world” btw.

This is insanely frustrating, to see so many people I used to respect absolutely refusing to accept reality and becoming complete shitheads because the victim is wearing a hat they don't like.

The worst part is these people think they're taking a moral high ground by wishing violence and even brutal death upon CHILDREN because they like Trump.

How can anyone see this and not think these people are absolutely fucking evil?

And another response to the twitter person:

http://www.asianews.it/news-en/Catholics-in-favour-of-Bangsamoro-autonomy-in-Mindanao-46001.html

Catholics in favour of Bangsamoro autonomy in Mindanao

A referendum is scheduled over the new few weeks in Mindanao to ratify a new autonomy law. The Mindanao Catholic Church Leaders for Peace (MCCLP) believe it will remedy “historic injustices” suffered by the Muslim community. For PIME missionary, “Fear and promises tend to influence the various positions.”

Zamboanga (AsiaNews) – On 21 January and 6 February, voters will decide the fate of a new law, the Bangsamoro Organic Law, designed to set up an autonomous territory, the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). Named after the Moro people, it will be home to at least four million people, mostly Muslims.

For the Mindanao Catholic Church Leaders for Peace (MCCLP), a group of Catholic prelates, the law, which comes after a string of unsuccessful attempts, could be "the last concrete chance for a just and lasting peace in Mindanao”.

The law is based on the 2014 peace agreement, signed by the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), the country’s largest Muslim rebel group. The deal brought to an end almost 50 years of conflict that left 120,000 people dead and two million people displaced.

In today’s statement, the MCCLP notes that the new dispensation will address three "historical injustices" against the Muslim community: loss of ancestral territory, threats to their cultural identity, and loss of political governance.

For the group, the law "is more than just another piece of legislation; it is more significantly a peace agreement that involves the future development of Mindanao and the rest of the country."

What is more, “On our part, as Catholic religious leaders, we need to focus on the horizontal peace process on the ground,” which means “engaging in the dialogue of life, action and spirituality among ordinary Christians and Muslims.”

"We also need to commit [ourselves] to intra-faith and inter-faith dialogue towards mutual respect and understanding so as to reduce or eliminate biases and prejudices. Religion should be viewed as a bridge towards reconciliation, not a wall that divides.”

Reacting to such statements, "Muslims have welcomed Catholic support for the law, seen as a sign of solidarity towards their autonomist aspirations," said Fr Sebastiano D'Ambra, speaking to AsiaNews.

The clergyman is a missionary with the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions (PIME), and has been in Mindanao for over 40 years. He is also the founder of Silsilah, a movement for Islamic-Christian dialogue and is currently the executive secretary of the Commission for Interreligious Dialogue of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).

"The MCCLP back the BOL, but at the same time, it wants to underscore and defend Christian rights. Many Christians came to Mindanao from the north of the country, taking land that is now under dispute with Muslims. The law clearly states that we must respect all cultural groups and even the leaders of the MILF have promised to defend the religious freedom of Christians."

Despite the prospect for autonomy, Muslims continue to be divided over the autonomy law. According to the PIME missionary, "In certain places, there is hostility, and local officials have urged Muslims to oppose it.”

"Fear and promises tend to influence the various positions,” he explained. “Tensions are running high but for now everything is under control. The government has extended martial law and soldiers have been deployed in great numbers."

"People, Christians and Muslims, are starting to believe that the BOL is the solution to the conflicts that have affected Mindanao for years,” said Sarah L Handang, a Muslim educator and activist for interreligious dialogue in Zamboanga.

"The only thing we have is hope. Perhaps our dream of peace will come true. It is important that people understand the opportunity that this law represents for the region."

The media were "pounced" upon, keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
A viral story spread. The mainstream media rushed to keep up. The Trump Internet pounced.

—The online supporters of the president were ready for a moment like the Covington Catholic controversy.

By Abby Ohlheiser and
Paul Farhi January 22 at 6:30 PM
The video, taken from an Instagram account and reposted to Twitter, went viral with the caption, “This MAGA loser gleefully bothering a Native American protester at the Indigenous Peoples March.” In the clip, an activist named Nathan Phillips beat a drum as a teen in a Make America Great Again hat stood inches from him, smiling.

As the story picked up speed on social media, a Washington Post editor assigned reporters to cover it. At about 3 p.m. on Saturday, one reporter spoke to Phillips about what happened. Others called the Catholic school and the local diocese, looking for a statement from someone who could represent the students in the video. The reporters weren’t aware of a critical third element in the scene: the Hebrew Israelites who had been taunting the high school boys moments before the viral video began.

At 5 p.m. on Saturday, still unaware of the moments preceding the viral video, The Post published its first story on what would become a days-long national argument about racism, the media and masculinity. The headline: “‘It was getting ugly’: Native American drummer speaks on his encounter with MAGA-hat-wearing teens.” The article quoted Phillips, saying he felt threatened by the teens. It also included a statement from the Catholic Diocese of Covington condemning the actions of the students seen in the video, in which they appeared to mock and taunt the Native American activist.

The smiling student, now identified as Nick Sandmann, released a statement 24 hour later saying that Phillips confronted him, not the other way around. Another video of the incident emerged showing Phillips slowly walking toward the teens, beating his drum.

In just a few hours on Saturday, the story took off with comet-like speed, propelled in equal measures by social-media outrage and by news reporting that drafted on its wake. In a now all-too-familiar process, people chose sides, and each side fed off the other, with mainstream news accounts pushing the whole slush pile along.

As is typical in such breaking-news situations, initial news accounts — which drew howls from partisans on both sides — were unable to provide all the context and facts. It took close to 48 hours for reporters, and a divided America, to fully grasp what had occurred, and to whom. At that point, President Trump weighed in with a tweet supportive of the Covington schoolboys, kicking the dust cloud up anew.

Like many viral outrage stories, the narrative became more complicated as more facts emerged, and more people stepped forward to talk about what they saw and experienced in that moment. But the Covington story isn’t just a run-of-the-mill incident of viral outrage. It involved MAGA-hat-wearing teens and Native American activists. Those who shared the video in those first 24 hours, including many conservatives, seemed to feel it was emblematic of the vitriol and racism that drives the worst of American culture. But when new details shifted the story into more ambiguous territory, a well-oiled machine of pro-Trump personalities and sites saw an opportunity to strike.

The Post’s next story on the incident was headlined, “Viral standoff between a tribal elder and a high-schooler is more complicated than it first seemed.” The reporters attempted to flesh out what, exactly, happened near the Lincoln Memorial with more sources and eyewitnesses. One witness said he heard students chant “Build that wall” at the protesters — a chant that is not heard in any available video footage — and suggested that Phillips approached the group to intervene. Others described the ugly insults that members of the Black Israelite group hurled at the teens in the lead-up to the video, ramping up the tension. March for Life, the nonprofit that organized the antiabortion rally that the Covington students were in town to support, deleted a statement condemning the teens. Instead, the group said it had decided to reserve judgment.

“Post journalists worked diligently on Saturday and Sunday to present the facts of the incident as we learned them,” Cameron Barr, managing editor of The Post, said in a statement. “This was a complex encounter involving many people with sharply different perspectives — we reported what we could verify by talking to participants and witnesses and examining the available video. As is often the case, reporting over time allows a more complete picture to emerge.”

For the students and their defenders, attempts by the media to widen the narrative of the first viral video came too late. Online vigilantes had identified the teens. Sandmann said he had received “physical and death threats via social media, as well as hateful insults."

Now, a new viral outrage emerged. This time the villain of the story was the news media.

That outrage came from a parallel universe online, one that has been waiting for a moment like this. The pro-Trump Internet has, for years, worked to create a media environment that is designed to destroy the traditional news media and replace it. Mike Cernovich, a popular figure in this world, helped to promote the Pizzagate conspiracy theory in 2016. Pizzagate falsely accused a D.C. pizza shop of housing a secret pedophile ring, and ultimately inspired a believer to show up at the shop with an assault rifle.

Cernovich has since rebranded himself as an anti-mainstream media source of real news — one who on some days tries to tie mass shootings to anti-fascist activists without credible evidence and on other days manages to get a Hollywood director fired from a major movie by using his popular Twitter account to amplify old, offensive tweets from the director about children and sexual misconduct.

The Covington story is the sort of thing the pro-Trump Internet and figures like Cernovich are made for. As videos emerged, showing Phillips slowly approaching the teens during an altercation with a third group nearby, they went to work.

C.J. Pearson, a teen conservative activist, collected tweets from verified users — including journalists and celebrities — who had reacted negatively to the first video of the confrontation. Pearson posted updates on his project with the hashtag #Verifiedbullies and promised to pass on the list to “legal counsel of the Covington Catholic students.”

An anonymous group of students and parents spoke to the Gateway Pundit, telling the right-wing news site that they’d retained the services of Robert Barnes, a lawyer popular in pro-Trump circles. On Twitter, Barnes offered to represent the students free if they wanted to sue a New York Times reporter who asked if any students would be expelled for the behavior seen in the original video.

“A lot of lawyers are begging to take these cases. Some of y’all gonna be Gawker’ed,” Cernovich tweeted, referring to the website that closed in 2016 after losing a lawsuit to Hulk Hogan.

According to the pro-Trump media, the Covington teens were blameless, the only victims who mattered. Cassandra Fairbanks, the Gateway Pundit writer who said she interviewed the families, tweeted, “Just asked one of the boys from Covington’s mom if she wants to comment on the new video that came out of the kids being bullied by the protesters and she said ‘I’m too busy crying.’ Nice job media.” She also shared a link to a petition with more than 22,000 signatures in support of the students.

Ben Garrison, a cartoonist who is popular on the pro-Trump Internet, drew his version of the scene: Instead of the smile seen in videos of the encounter, Sandmann was drawn looking small, wide-eyed, and terrified as a menacing, stereotypical caricature of a Native American beat a drum in his face.

The liberal backlash against the teens, and who had apologized, and who hadn’t, and whether those apologies were sincere enough, became a breaking news story on the pro-Trump Internet. “Just spoke to MAGA hat kid Nick on the phone - he is total hero and has been maligned by the media He is in good spirits and plans to FIGHT these lies by the media I told him we are with him 100%!,” conservative figure Charlie Kirk tweeted.

Eventually the president weighed in, tweeting Tuesday morning that “the students of Covington have become symbols of Fake News and how evil it can be.”

Amid speculation that the boys might get an invitation to visit the White House, Savannah Guthrie announced that Sandmann would be interviewed Wednesday on the “Today Show.” Guthrie posted a photo of the two of them on Twitter, sitting in front of the cameras. Sandmann was smiling.

From the article, last sentence:
Sandmann was smiling.
We’re all smiling now. :)

“That outrage came from a parallel universe online, one that has been waiting for a moment like this.“ (referring to the media coverage blunder)

Moments like this seem to happen every 4 days or so.

All media's in France from left to right are reporting that the kids harassed the amerindian. No mention on what really happened, just blatant propaganda.
Weirdly, media in Poland do not report on that, and out media are either huge ameriboos or huge amerihaters, so you'd think they would report on something that was trending in the US

Nothing justifies what the Covington students did

There were a few lessons I only needed to learn once when I lived in New York City from 1990 to 2007. Never have the bagel-cart guy put sugar in your coffee (it’ll be too sweet). Never hail-a-cab-while-black on an Uptown avenue (they usually don’t stop). And never, ever, walk by the Black Israelites, especially with your white boyfriend (you’re just asking for trouble).

That last lesson came to mind as I watched the one hour and 46 minute video posted by one of the members of the Hebrew Israelites here in Washington. It shows the before, during and after of the now-infamous encounter at the Lincoln Memorial between Omaha Nation elder Nathan Phillips and teenager Nick Sandmann of Kentucky’s Covington Catholic High School. Sandmann was in town for the annual March for Life. Phillips was in town for the Indigenous Peoples March. Both took place on Jan. 18.

As has been my experience, the Black Hebrew Israelites hurled racism, homophobia and worse at anyone and everyone who crossed their path. Before the Covington kids came on the scene, an African American man was threatened and called an Uncle Tom several times. When the students came on the scene, they were called everything but a child of God.

The seeming lack of judgment by their chaperones was curious. If the ranting and raving Black Hebrew Israelites are the kind of folks who necessitate my crossing the street or altering my path before I make it into their line of sight, why would the Covington kids and their minders think it’s okay to engage crazy, hateful people raising hell in a national park? They should have ignored the Black Hebrew Israelites the way most everyone else does when they are at their usual perch outside the Gallery Place Metro stop in Chinatown.

At first, the Covington students kept their distance. By the time, Phillips drummed his way into the situation they had moved much closer to the Black Hebrew Israelites. And at various points, the young men gave as good as they got. The Black Hebrew Israelites called the young boys “school shooters,” and one asked, “What, you about to go postal?” A student clad in gray sweats and a blue hooded sweatshirt tartly replied, “No, I’m going to go take a s---.”

When the Black Hebrew Israelites declare, “I don’t see one black person in the crowd,” the boys all turn to the one with them. What made the moment even more troubling was when the Black Hebrew Israelites said “Y’all got one n----r in the crowd.” One of the boys turned around and said, “No, we’ve got two.” Later, the Israelite yelled, “That’s the only one y’all could bring to the front?” A kid in what look like black track pants and a blue sweatshirt responded, “We got one at home but he ain’t here.”

Having been put in that position of being singled out as the “only one” in a crowd, I can only imagine how that kid who emerged felt, especially after the Black Hebrew Israelites incessantly referred to him as “n----r” in front of his classmates. But all this took place after Phillips made his way to the crowd of boys, where he would eventually come face to face with Sandmann. Even the Black Hebrew Israelites recognized Phillips was moving in to try to keep the peace. “Here comes dad,” the main voice on the recording says as Phillips and others with him move in between the Black Hebrew Israelites and the Covington Catholic high schoolers.

A video made by the Indigenous Peoples March shows the pivotal moment, and you catch your first glimpse of Sandmann at about nine seconds into the 224 seconds of footage. At 46 seconds, Phillips moves toward an unmoving and smiling Sandmann. At about 2:23, a male voice can be heard asking, “What’s going on?” To which a woman can be heard responding, “You guys are acting like a mob. That’s what’s going on.” Adding with sarcasm, as the camera pans to her, “It’s awesome. You guys are what, 16? How old are you?”

Many on the right are using the equal opportunity bigotry of the Black Hebrew Israelites as a way to excuse the disrespectful and obnoxious behavior of the Covington boys. Others, such as Kyle Smith of the National Review, wag their fingers at the teens. But Smith added something else in reaction to the backlash received by Sandmann and his classmates that irked me to no end. “Until about ten minutes ago, it was broadly agreed in our culture that kids are allowed to do some dumb things because they’re kids,” Smith wrote. “Should these kids’ lives be ruined because some of them responded to obnoxious provocation by being a bit rude themselves?”

Let’s be clear: This assessment only applies to white kids.

As Stacey Patton wrote so eloquently in a 2014 op-ed in The Post, “In America, black children don’t get to be children.” If Smith were right, Jordan Davis, 17, wouldn’t have been killed in 2012 for playing loud music in Florida. Tamir Rice, 12, wouldn’t have been killed in 2014 for playing with a toy gun in a Cleveland park. A bikini-clad Dejerria Becton, 15, wouldn’t have been manhandled by a Texas police officer at a pool party in 2015. And those are only the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

“To be honest, I was startled and confused as to why he had approached me. We had already been yelled at by another group of protesters, and when the second group approached I was worried that a situation was getting out of control where adults were attempting to provoke teenagers,” Sandmann wrote in a statement that defies the video evidence. “I never felt like I was blocking the Native American protester. He did not make any attempt to go around me. It was clear to me that he had singled me out for a confrontation, although I am not sure why.”

“Respect your elders” was a constant refrain from my mother and other relatives when I was growing up. And it was reinforced during my own years in Catholic schools. It didn’t matter whether you knew them or not, whether you were related to them or not. A child and an adult are never on an equal playing field. And yet, for me and many others, Sandmann’s actions and those of his classmates were those of disrespectful children toward an adult. No amount of rude, homophobic, racist, anti-Catholic invective from loons like the Black Hebrew Israelites justifies what they did.

tl;dr they were still being disrespectful to the adults so fuck them they deserve to be doxed and have their lives ruined

If you expect honesty from French media other than satirical magazines I don't know what to say. Everyone's grandfather was in the resistance, don't you know. Every last one of them.
