Lets discuss? Ive seen numerous children with a history of sexual abuse have a later diagnosis of mental health disorders. We know there were accusations of sexual misconduct between Michael and Jani. We dont have a clue what the fuck has happened to poor Bohdi, but suspect plenty. Im interested to know other theories about this....
I don't want to speculate specifically about potential sexual abuse, except to say there are a few red flags there...
But I think, in general, trauma is a huge part of mental illness. I've read about ADHD being extremely difficult to distinguish from trauma-induced behaviour. I've also watched enough TLC/A&E to notice patterns:
Hoarders = trauma of loss
600 lb Life = sexual abuse
Intervention = either of above, parental abuse or divorce, other major trauma
I think schizophrenia has definite roots in brain and biology, just based on its heritability. But I think it absolutely gets triggered or exacerbated by trauma.
There's probably a sort of epigenetic effect. We all inherit different levels of resilience, and intergenerational trauma, too.
To bring it back to the Schofields... I think both Michael and Susan have organic, inherited mental illness. But they also had fucked up childhoods, and that's the part that really screwed up their thinking.
I think Jani and Bodhi, in the wild, would probably have had autism and/or mood regulation issues. But IF they had parents who were sane (or at least properly treated)-- they would have accessed early intervention, and the kids could have learned better coping skills.
I remember reading years ago that the label "schizophrenia" is so weighty that it made patients more disabled than if they were simply labelled "psychotic". Doctors avoid saddling people with the label now in many cases.
Even IF Jani was "hallucinating" (I think it's synesthesia)-- instead of panicking about "schizophrenia", there are better ways to handle it. Accept the hallucinations, but find strategies to minimize their importance, and learn to live with them and just keep going. But no one could teach Jani coping skills, because the adults didn't have any.
Jani and Bodhi may have been mildly affected by some neurological issues, but the extent to which they are disabled now is totally the parents' fault. For all the things they failed to do for early intervention, and for all the abuse and yelling and drugs and neglect and poor nutrition they've piled on since. (Not to mention the screen time.)
