It reeks of "waaaaaaah, we had it worse!"
Uh... weird that it's trying to somehow have an us vs them. They do realize most of the genocides they list were perpetrated both by and against africans, right?

Nobody says "The holocaust was terrible because 6 million germans were murdered" because nobody would have any sympathy.

I mean, all murders suck, and if you're murdered, it doesn't really matter how many other people were murdered at the time. So... let's just not murder people. Here in the west we're doing an ok job of it, ok, now your turn africa.

Why not? King Leopold II very likely killed upwards of 10 million people. That's certainly at least the same ballpark as the Holocaust.

Why, that's almost 2x a Holocaust!

I think it can and should be argued that people, especially those in the West, be educated or at least aware of the genocides that took place in Africa and Asia, but it's not a game where you can quantify human suffering.

How about just don't compare these tragedies at all?

But how can you figure out who is more oppressed if you can't compare numbers to prove it?

Still, Trevor Noah has what I think is a good point - that cultural imperialism and documentation makes the Holocaust much more real to us than many of the other genocides in history. I think there's a difference in how the Holocaust was an industrialised slaughter, but if you want to decry 'history's greatest monster', to many countries there's been someone who was worse than Hitler. Not just on a pure numbers level, but also in regards to not just massacring a people, but enslaving them as well.

I've always understood the Holocaust stands out in terms of speed and considered effort, other horrors have been a product of a protracted period enhanced by external factors such as decease and famine and usually a product of a means to an end, for example the horrors of the congo where to line the king pockets. The holocaust is uniquely frightening because it was a calculated attempt to exterminate a people using industrialized process.

Yeah, I think the Nazi genocides were a pretty crucial moment in the history of atrocity since it demonstrated just how easy it would be with modern technology and modern expertise for a nation to exterminate vast numbers of people using multiple different methods from the archetypical gas chambers in the death camps to the einsatzgrupen squads in the field to the intentional mass starvation of civilian populations to simply just a policy of "if they so much as look at our soldiers funny, slaughter the entire village in retaliation" applied throughout a continent.

In the case of other groups/figures from Genghis Khan to Stalin to king Leopold, it took them decades to kill even a fraction of the people murdered by the nazis in little over five years* which is why I think the Nazis have that special "status" regarding their atrocities.

That being said while they represent a crucial moment, they are not the only such crucial moment in history regarding atrocity and genocide. The Khmer Rouge demonstrated how amusingly easy it is for a government to just straight up wipe out a quarter of its own people in a couple of years solely through brainwashing enough peasants into perpetually enraged fanatics, giving them sole access to guns and vehicles, and then giving them a licence to torture and kill everybody they thought might be a heretic/subhuman or simply didnt like for whatever petty reason. Something made ever more apparent by the Rwandan genocide among other such incidents where mass and rapid slaughter was enabled by use of both modern technology making swift killing of large numbers faster, and modern media and communications allowing genocide to be organised and spread nationwide.

*and they were only really focusing on full on genocide in the latter half of this five years

I'd be more annoyed by the "skull fuck it", but at least they're showing you what a loser they are. Who cares? (And truck nuts ARE stupid.)

Yeah, read "King Leopold's Ghost". He was considered a monster even in his own time. Dude was an all around bastard -- even his own family couldn't stand him.

He's probably as close to Hitler in Africa as you could get.

Yeah the "Fuck it" if anything about it offends me, and that's an almost zero amount. Most of the people commenting are frumpy 30+ year old ladies and a couple of soyboys from the looks of it too.

I'm willing to bet it's some 40+ year old married (wife with big ol' tiddies) dude that would probably get a laugh out of the comments though.

I think we can all agree truck nuts are dumb, but I can appreciate the goofiness of the concept.

The mass communications and propaganda techniques in Rwanda were quite modern, but the actual methods of carrying it out were as primitive as it gets and largely involved simply hacking people to death with machetes, up close and personal, like they were harvesting wheat. Some people involved in that simply spent every waking moment for a couple months hacking people to death and raping the ones who were still alive during their time off.

And what did the world do during all this? Absolutely sweet fuck all. So much for never again.

That's why Africa today is crawling with astronomers, architects and enterpreneurs!
Did they not conquer each other and then sell the slaves to Europeans? Who stole what? Who stole who? Whose fault is it supposed to be? It can be difficult to accept the randomness and lack of individual accountability for things like this, but that doesn’t justify being like “ok guise it is these peoples fault, forever and ever uwu”.
