Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

The DA's probably the least he has to worry about. The Postal Inspectors are going to manually cut him into stir fry-sized strips and mail him to Satan. They're more feared in the judicial system than practically any other federal LEA, the FBI included.
Can someone explain to me Postal Inspectors because apparently they're the most obscure law enforcement branch of the federal government since I've never heard anything about them

CWB chicago has a better write up, but the tl;dr of it is that if this group finds out you’re using the mail to commit a crime they will find out about it and they will literally throw the book at you over it.

Postal Inspectors are some of the most quietly badass Federal Officers. They are in fact the oldest branch of US Federal Law Enforcement. (Okay tied with Treasury, although I think the PO got operational first.) They insure the mail is delivered safely, correctly and without theft, fraud, or explosives. Have you ever noticed how afraid people are to "mess with the mail". The Postal Inspectors are why. They are not a flashy branch of Law Enforcement. You don't see them leading SWAT Teams etc. But they are incredibly tenacious investigators. And they have no sense of humor. If you send something bad through the mail. You are going down. They are also fairly unique in they are one of the few branches of Federal Law Enforcement that does not answer to the Justice Department. (they refer cases to Justice for Prosecution onc ethey have made the case, and they do assist others such as the FBI, but they don't take orders from the AG.) They have extremely broad powers of their own and they date back to Ben Franklin. Postal Inspectors are the people that make IRS Auditors nervous.

Edit, ah, I forgot to include a few important bits. When the US was formed there were two initial tasks given to the new Government. Deliver the Mail and Print the Money. From this were created the Post Office and the Treasury Department. Alexander Hamilton created and led Treasury. Ben Franklin the Post Office. Each included some Federal Officers to investigate and prevent crime and fraud relative to their domain. Treasury looks for Counterfeiting for example. The big one that the PI's look for is Mail Fraud. Which is broadly any crime that involves the use of the US Mail. It is one of the oldest and most powerful Criminal Laws we have on the books. Used to bring down titans, for the simple act of putting a stamp on their schemes.

One of the more famous bits of history is when it was determined that the President needed a security serive, the Federal Government had only those 2 empowered Law Enforcement agencies. Treasury Inspectors and Postal Inspectors. The Secret Service went under Treasury in a coin toss.

You'll never need to have anything to do with them unless you fuck with the mail. And if you do fuck with the mail and get caught, you're fucked, and these are the guys who will be fucking you.

The Post Office is one of the few government departments right in the Constitution, and has been there since the U.S. has.

This man speaks the truth. I knew an ex marine who became a postal inspector after discharge because they would allow him to bust way more balls and be more of an asshole than the state police of the sherriff's office.

My Mom's Uncle was a High Ranking Postal Inspector. From listening to him I think some of their Postal Inspectors have been there as long as the US has as well. They are like spooky undead law enforcement. The other agencies don't talk about them. They just pray they don't come around.

I have never, ever seen or met a Postal Inspector, and I'm fine with this. I'd like it to stay that way.

The Treasury "won" the job of Secret Service because one of their agents tracking counterfeiters in Chicago (well, look at that...funny) uncovered a bizarre (and probably doomed to fail, but I digress) plot to dig up and steal the body of Abraham Lincoln to use as a ransom to get another counterfeiter out of jail.

Thus, in foiling that plot, they had set the precedent as the agency that had at least once before protected the President.... it's fascinating stuff.

If he made a gofundme this very minute, he could rake in quite a bit of cash to pay these lawyers. I really hope he does since it will be that much sweeter of a meltdown when presented with hard evidence he's a liar.

It's far more likely that he just networks with other rich idiots who will privately foot the bill if he can't, but I imagine he's got at least a few mil banked at his level of fame.

It's a modern day lunching

You know, if CNN, the Democrats, and the leftists in general actually cared about minorites, they would be pissed at Smollett for lying. Smollett lying (and all of these other faux hate crimes) are going to discourage the ACTUAL victims of REAL hate crimes from reporting them.

But ... Nah. That would be the most sane reaction. Instead, they're just saying "Oh no, this just gives the Sean Hannitys of the world a point over us!"
