Kjel and Niraj both brought in about $54,895 and $55,955, respectively, wish some additional compensation.

Fuck the board. This should have been immediately reported as a criminal matter. The board is as responsible for keeping them out of gaol as it was for their embezzlement.
They brazenly diverted almost a third of the organisation's revenue because they *knew* the board wasn't watching - even though they did fuck all for TLL from about a month before Nina was picked up by ICE until they "resigned".
I'm assuming it could have impeded him being granted citizenship had the board filed a criminal complaint. I expect the board didn't want the heat taking that path would attract.
Interesting that they burned through $450,000 in a year (their salaries plus the stolen funds) but were begging for money to get to Nina's final hearing. I'm guessing the RV was one of the "unauthorised purchases".

A lot of it would have been travelling. They were travelling around for about a month before Nina got picked up and then it was ages before they settled somewhere in Cali after she was released from custody. It's still a large amount of money for two people to spend in a year on top of their actual incomes. They were definitely looking at establishing other businesses during that time, though, as they registered other business names.
The information about the embezzlement needs to make its way to Guidestar. The 2017 financials aren't on there yet and it still has a bronze ranking, which is supposed to indicate transparency. The key staff details have been updated, though.

I'll probably go through the 990 return in detail when time permits. I'll post a follow-up about that should I find any other information peculiar or significant enough to share.
Still, I noticed that in addition to the $4525 loan reported on the 2016 return, TLL made another loan in 2017 to Greta for an additional $483 for "General Purposes.." Unlike the last loan, however, this was reported as not approved by the board or committee. Similarly to the last loan, there is no reported written agreement for this one. I don't think anyone here is surprised to see Greta hasn't payed any of that $5008 back.
I'm impressed TLL got any of the embezzled money back from Greta & Nina. Good luck getting any more money out of them; I believe the pair knows how to make - and keep - themselves as judgement-proof as possible so they won't have to pay anything else back, especially with TLL conceding that a lawsuit isn't financially viable even though that could get them a judgement against the pair should they ever come into money in the future.
In short, I think Greta & Nina will just wait out the 10 year restitution window and pay exactly $0 in hopes they can get away with - and profit from - their embezzlement. I also suspect TLL doesn't want to file a suit because the transgender community will see it as an attack against "two of their own" and potentially not support the charity - the fact it's unworthy of any kind of support notwithstanding.

There were 11 other people listed in Part VII as officers, directors, etc. All of them were reported as devoting just 1 hour a week and drawing no salary or other compensation from the nonprofit. Yet there was the following wage information reported in Part IX:
- Current Officers, etc: $118423 - All to Greta and Nina.
- Other Salaries and Wages: $314993 - I'd love to know who received this, whether it was call volunteers or someone else. This comes out to just over $6000 per week.

In order to enforce repayment of embezzled funds, an organization has to go to court and obtain a judgement. A contract to repay is nothing. Without a court order, it's nothing more than a promise.

People like Jessica Willow, Jaden, Zander, etc were staff. They all attended conferences (no doubt on TLL's dime) and at one point Greta posted that she was proud to have been able to give X (I think it was 5) trans people jobs. It never made any sense because TLL simply wasn't providing the level of services which requires that many paid staff.
They did budget for someone with qualifications to start answering phones and training volunteers (I think around $60,000 was budgeted for that) and I'm pretty sure Scout Wolfcave was paid once the two organisations merged (which was about halfway through the year, from memory). What Greta and Nina were being paid for remains a mystery. They literally did nothing but spend TLL's money after Nina was detained and didn't even pretend to be doing TLL work.
