Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

No Nigerians in MAGA hats but still funny.

So it actually might be difficult to get Jussie on mail fraud and be more trouble than it’s worth.
I'm just an internet laywer, but their first shot wouldn't be mail fraud. However since jussie supposedly admitted he was trying to get a raise that might be fun too.

From what I've read, just the implied threat from the white powder is enough for this one. I'm probably on a watchlist now.

I was really disappointed when I looked this one up and found the 'any other person' line. Maybe a law-brained kiwi will give me some good news on this one.

Have they said he's getting kicked off yet? WE know standards aren't the same for gay, black, sjw types.
Not an offical "fuck this guy he's out" type statement yet, but announcements that scenes of his are being cut and the big musical number for him that was planned is being 86'd is a pretty solid indicator his character is done.

Dude paid with a check. That's some hardcore stupid right there. If only being stupid were a crime -- he'd probably go in for life.

It's not even that, really. There are a couple thousandish a year, that's plenty of stuff going on for the media to paint it as a persistent issue. The problem is, it's mostly just vandalism or intimidation, and at worst "simple assault" (IE: "he punched me, and also used a slur"). That shit's boring as hell, you're not going to make national headlines with "bar fight in nowhere, Wisconsin escalates into hate crime when one guy involved calls his opponent a fag", and that's the ugliest, meanest thing you'll get, spray painted graffiti and the like are even less notable.

So instead, the only hate crimes that are really worth reporting on are the spectacular ones, where something really over the top goes down, or it's random and targets some totally unsuspecting victim, etc. The problem is that since those are the only ones that get reported, those are the mental image of a hate crime most people have, including the people who go out and try to fake one, so the odds of a nationally reported hate crime being bunk are fairly decent.

And none of them are celebrities, either.

It's sad that these tweets summarize America today in a nutshell.

What exactly are they supposed to do? Does he want the LBGT community to keep on supporting this lying piece of shit?

Yeah, dude makes it THAT much worse for victims of actual crimes, and your first reaction is to blame people for NOT supporting him? Da'hell?

The Mail Fraud as an attempt to fraudulently trick his employers into paying him more would not in and of itself be worth the effort. But the White Powder (Tylenol and “unknown protein”) kind of changes the equation. It’s the equivalent of mailing in bomb threats. They don’t generally view that as “more trouble than its worth to prosecute”. And while they are doing that, they’ll hit him with the mail Fraud too, because why the fuck not.

Geragos wants to show he can defend tough cases but this guy faked a crime against himself and is a mongoloid negroid

Don't besmirch our mongol brethren by associating them with this loser. He and his Nigerian accomplices couldn't rapemurder a tiny Chinese village with an army of 200,000 mounted archers.

But wow, this whole mess blew up even more spectacularly than I ever expected, and I expected absolute retardation from this story. Oh Twitter idiots, please keep attempting to die on this hill of rampant lynching of brown and gay people that surely must be happening if only we looked more vigorously. You will not be missed.

Not only that, but if there was an investigation, you can get Jussie for lying to federal agents. Also, I'm pretty sure everybody on set who was exposed to Jussie's fake letter and the subsequent quarantine can sue Jussie for emotional distress and false imprisonment.

Lol, you just know that the 8min phone call while the brothers were overseas had him gloating about how well everything turned out and how smart they all are. He is so dumb that they didn't even wait 24h after rehearsal / walking around the 'attack' area so it's likely the cops have those videos.

Does anybody know if the judge will be the same for trial? Because he already hates him and the sketch artist caught it.
