Overwatch

That's why I referred to them as "staples of the genre." Overwatch launched with two game modes, escort and king of the hill. Over the last 2 1/2 years it added a half dozen more game modes plus significant variation within those modes. If you're a fan of Overwatch's fundamental design (simple classes, team-based game modes, high/constant variation in team composition), then you're not missing out on anything other shooters have. But the fact stands: you have to be a fan of Overwatch's design to enjoy the game.
You're talking to someone who played the game since its launch. Even with my roughly 2 to 3 years of experience saying that you have to be a fan to enjoy it is a pretty lousy excuse and also contradictory as the game's very very simple design makes it way more accessible than most hero shooters so saying you have to be a fan to enjoy the game sounds discordant especially since the characters seem to be created to appease a specific crowd. . My point still stands as these inclusions have been slowed down as yes you are right when the game launched it was very barren and even today it gives moderate amounts of content that acts a placebo to trick you into thinking there is a large amount of production. The game has been rehashing the same events over and over and in terms of overall content the most you will get is different amounts of cosmetics which are the incentive to play these events over and over as at their core they get really boring if they do not change their overall dynamic. Bring Lucioball back is fair but making it competitive isn't fixing anything or changing anything neither is adding more characters in Junkenstein's Revenge.

So, I forgot to pause my Humble Monthly when it was Overwatch and I ended up owning it. Never had much intentions to play this as I'm really not into competitive "play the same few maps over and over" type of game.

I figured I'd at least try it. I think the most enjoyment I got was just looking at the character models and the skins. This is really it, Overwatch's only relevance is it's colorful characters. Which are completely wasted on this game. I mean fuck it's a first person shooter, even if I opened a million loot crates to get a skin that's really nice. I would get to see that skin when I start the game and when I'm done. Oh and I guess I'd see it on my corpse when I die. What's the point?

Like @Secret Asshole said in the Soldier 79 thread, all this lore and pleasing character design is being squandered on a FPS. When there can be like 3 Tracers on one team, killing an other tracer, what's the fucking point?

All this lore is there because this game is TF2 and TF2 has all those Source Filmaker videos. So we gotta do the same thing! It makes no sense in TF2 and it certainly doesn't here either.

So yeah, uninstalled the damn thing...

Hey at least it got us plenty of good porn, right?

I like the TF2 lore because it's fun and not meant to be taken seriously and it's really the main difference between TF2 and Overwatch for me. The "meet the <class>" videos in TF2 are all very short, fun, and to the point and tell you nothing that you need to know to play the game. They're all just comedy pieces that subtly hint at future items, updates, or new hats. The comics are sometimes dramatic but are also the same as the videos as mainly a fun thing to highlight new stuff coming down the pipe. Valve (used to) always take a weird extra step and include actual phone numbers and mailing addresses in the promotion material that you could physically reach out to and get some cool little real life items.

The TF2 lore is very simple - everyone is a mercenary fighting a stalemate war for two brothers who are fighting for their father's gravel company. They aren't heroes and are frequently degenerates and their war matters very little at all to anyone. The company itself is worth very little and it's mainly a pride thing. These character are also killed in the comics and brought back as ghosts. They created an actual wizard character so when they encounter anything that sounds weirdly out of the lore, they can now literally say "well a wizard did it". It is nowhere near up it's own ass like Overwatch (or any Blizzard property at this point).

Also, they didn't tell us who they like to fuck, because it's irrelevant to a god damn FPS.

Doesnt the spy fuck the scouts mother and soldier is gonna marry one of heavys sisters?

Blizzard (in my opinion) used to be a pretty innovative studio and some of their games have drastically changed the gaming landscape (Diablo for ARPGS, WoW for MMORPGS at least) but Overwatch isn't coming close to changing the landscape and I think that's what has most people disappointed. I personally wasn't excited for overwatch and had little faith in Activision-Blizzard but the OW team citing Team Fortress 2 as a "masterclass of design and gameplay" led me to believe that they were at least aware enough in the game they were making to have more than a shitty TF2 knock-off at release. They weren't.

Remember that Overwatch is virtually the leftover designs and assets from Titan repurposed. Overwatch is literally a "oh shit we just spent millions and years on something that went nowhere, we need to make something quick, TF2? TF2." Plan B.

There's no deep lore, because there never was any deep lore, all the designs were pre-production. They just made up a quick backstory, slapped it on a cinematic and ran with it.

Can you imagine how Blizzard would be doing right now if the Overwatch hail mary wasn't a success?

Blizzard was on the downhill since 2012, arguably 2008. Diablo III flopped despite having a great expansion that fixed it, Heroes of the Storm came late to the moba party and now it's entering maintenance mode and from the looks of the surveys they're handing out they are considering doing the same with Hearthstone, Starcraft and WoW are as dead as their genres, They have something going on in development for Overwatch that seems big: maybe the game is being ported to mobile or some battle royale mode. I don't think there is going to be a D4 unless Blizzard is that retarded at announcing things and it has been in the works this whole time but they will have Path of Exile to compete against and Immortals is a cash in with a bad rep that will only do good in Asian markets. It doesn't look good for the company and its autonomy of management has already been stripped from the higher ups that have an Activision mindset.

Overwatch isn't really an FPS, it's a goddamn MOBA.

Like take TF2 - if you're playing it for real, you might have a medic, a demoman, 2 soldiers, 2 scouts. Notice how 5 of those characters hoot their weapons at the enemy!

In Overwatch, consider the following "meta" team composition -
3 Tank 3 Support
Zarya-Rein-Dva Brigette-Lucio-Moira

100% standing around in shields and healing, with occasional Q pressing to go invincible! You might as well just play guild wars or some other mmo game where the primary goal is to avoid the flashing red circles and stay in the the safe blue circles.

I contest that a game where you can play the meta by picking zero dps characters is not really an FPS at all - especially given that even in quickplay, the whining never stops if you don't have two tanks and two healers.

Yeah that's kind of how I feel because one of the points of the series was how rich its lore was and how it wasn't just gonna be a bunch of characters with unique abilities they will have personalities but in terms of game to story their personalities are just the thing they do or they're very token. Like stated above the lore itself isn't to sneeze at as it's just random snippets of comics which to be honest I didn't get much from reading them but the animations try their hardest but overall aren't as interesting either and just feel hollow and manipulative.

I like the TF2 lore because it's fun and not meant to be taken seriously and it's really the main difference between TF2 and Overwatch for me. Well that's the thing about TF2 I like it built itself into a lore with characters you don't expect to have much under the surface and for the most part it isn't overt but they do integrate lore into the game. TF2 plays with its concept instead of trying to grab your attention with the illusion of it having deepest lore rather it's simple and allows for easy speculation instead of frivolous things like the sexuality of these characters or who they're dating or will date

It's heavily implied that the Spy is actually the Scout's father, but it's still a runaway "I fucked your mom" joke from the "meet the spy" video.
This is outright confirmed in the comics when Scout died (Medic brough him back though). Was actually a heartfelt scene, by TF2 standards. But Scout still thinks his father is Tom Jones.

Yikes. I forgot I ended the last capture the flag competitive season in bronze. Now I'm doing placements and essentially soloing entire teams of bronze players with Mei.

Tethering placements to the previous season makes sense when the seasons are days apart, but when competitive seasons are 11 months apart, it can lead to hilarious mismatches.

It's really easy to tell when a game has little to no content - it tries to convince you it's worth playing because it is "diverse" or has the correct politics.

But there is plenty of content... outside content

Hey, Mercy's a cutie in real life, too.

But apparently annoying as fuck.

....That was supposed to be comedy right?
The cringe was so real. Women really have no sense of humor, it's an evolutionary psychology thing, men had to evolve their sense of humor, it was a courting mechanism and it was a coping mechanism (trench humor). This is why you're not getting the same Netflix deal, Amy!

Sorry for random rant. I did end up reading all the story lore for Overwatch and god damn it's impossible to reconcile with the game. There's like 22 characters but only a fourth of them could even be called villains. Some have absolutely no fucking reason to be anywhere. A great deal of D.Va's lore is that she wishes she could travel the world but can't because of her duty defending Korea.... Then wtf is she doing fighting in all those exotic locale? Last time I checked every map in OW isn't in Korea! It is said of Symmtra that "she dislikes killing and only resorts to lethal force if she has to" ... Huuuh, Okay, she's in the wrong game then!

It's full of this derp.

Ohboi you guize, a new hero...!

Overwatch appears to be teasing a new support hero
2019-02-22 08:00:00by Chris Moyse

Mercenary Medicine

It looks like another hero is on their way to Blizzard's multiplayer shooter Overwatch. In typical OW fashion, Blizzard are teasing the new character's arrival via some mysterious lore, that has suddenly turned up on the game's official Twitter.

The Twitter link leads to be a mission report from evil organisation Talon, which references one "Jean-Baptiste Augustine," a French medic who has gone rogue and is now on the run. From this report, we can gather that Augustine is formidable in combat, with a keen, sharp-shooting eye, as well as being a specialist in field treatment.

Put those two qualities together, and it sounds like a sniper medic which, of course, Overwatch already has in the form of Ana Amari. The most recent addition to the colourful crew, Ashe, also has sniper capabilities, so I think we can rule out long-range fire. Augustine is also noted as having "the devil's luck," which could be a figure of speech, or could hint to some adept skill they possess to help them dodge death. No doubt we'll see more of Jean-Baptiste in the near future, as Overwatch prepares to add its new hero to the fold.

Overwatch is available now on PS4, PC and Xbox One.

Place your bets on where "Jean-Baptiste Augustine" falls in the diversity lottery.

I cant wait for another bridgette
Just pull the switch on this shitty game already
>We didn't plan for OW to be an esport
>Oh fuck it's popular, dump all our money into it
>Joke tournament with millions to its name; has 8 rows of chairs for spectators
>Kill their original IPs to fuel it further
Even the diversity fans are starting to call bullshit on it. There really is nothing positive about it but those diehard "m-muh main" people who feel obligated to flex their skins and gold weapons.

I was honestly enjoying the idea of the OWL. An all-London team with a spitfire for a logo, clashing with an all-California team etc.

Then every god damn team turned out to be full of asians and lack any and all nationality. The fuck does a bunch of chinks have to do with London?
